This looks like there are 26 schools in the 1A West. Maybe 10 of these have a football team. The SMC looks to be a good possible league, but the outliers like S Davidson and N Stokes are stuck like Chuck with few options. Probably end up in split leagues?

Any chance some of the non football schools possibly consider fielding teams if they know they are competing against schools with less than 400 kids instead of schools with close to 600? at least some of the academies.

Now as far as the true 1A teams which in my mind is teams with enrollment of under 400 have something to feel good about when they beat teams with 2A & 3A numbers. It’s no different from college where you have D1, D2 & D3 schools. So enjoy your watered down State Championships in 1A because real football fans will always know the truth !

I wouldn't say it would be watered down in fact some of the accomplishments of Mount Airy and tarboro are significant. Everyone agrees it's not as easy to win one when it's not split in two classifications. But you never won one did you. Your world Peter team with those studs lost to Elkin 3 years ago excuse me 4 years ago and then the next year who'd you lose to?

Most teams MA beat last 2 seasons had same number of students if not more. You MTN BOYS should still stomped the Bears (CITY BOYS) after all it was played at the Big Chokes ! Quitter town USA !

You guys really sound upset over the potential for a small small division. I don’t get. It won’t be a bad thing for Rosman, or Andrews, North Edgecombe to win a few playoffs games. It will be a more competitive classification then you think after a couple years. Get a little success and they will get hungry for more and put in more work.

Well, one a bracket is a bracket and two ER got one a couple of years ago. Aren't they in the West ? So yes in the west.

Worked great in the 1910s when there were only like 75 high schools. But like you keep suggesting, this ain't the 1910s. This is the 2020s with almost 450 high schools. 8 classes, it's gonna be chaos and I'm here for it

It’s all good but it doesn’t have a thing to do with Murphy. Small town schools are proud and each of our elementary, middle school and High Schools are the lifeblood of our small communities. Hiwassee Dam has a great history in Basketball and they don’t want consolidation either. Robbinsville had 2 other High Schools before consolidation and both had great basketball teams and were the pride of their communities. Large Counties with big populations will never understand especially those that have open boarders. I guess eventually consolidation will happen but I hope not in my lifetime. I like the 8 classification and I don’t care if Robbinsville wins more Championships. At least I know it will be a level playing field for all the small traditional 1A teams that are still the heartbeat of their small towns. Having said that I would like to see Cherokee & Hayesville dropped back to 1A.

It would probably work with the best team in the state actually being recognized as the State Champion for that year. Would also be less chest thumping that so many here complain about(positive), a single board with more people to talk to about games(positive), and would be a lot easier for small schools to actually get bigger schools to play them(positive), conference makeup would be interesting. Also very likely no one on this board would ever see their school win a championship again. But oh boy, if they did it would actually mean something. Even a deep playoff run would be meaningful. Sweet sixteen, elite eight... 64 team tournament would be necessary for a couple 1a size schools to make it in.
