Class 1-A
1. West Montgomery (11) (10-0) 154 1
2. Wallace-Rose Hill (3) (9-1) 134 2
3. Warsaw Kenan (1) (9-1) 124 4
4. Tarboro (9-1) 123 3
(tie) East Surry (2) (10-0) 123 5
6. East Wilkes (10-0) 87 6
7. Mitchell County (9-1) 59 T7
8. East Montgomery (9-1) 35 10
9. Robbinsville (7-2) 30 T7
10. Mooresville Pine Lake Prep (10-0) 29 NR

I honestly think this is the most legit poll I've seen so far. West Montgomery is probably the most talented on the western side and there's 3 top tier teams in the east in WRH, Kenan, and Tarboro.

AP is always off. Pine lake ranked about Swain, Rosman, and Murphy.?

10-0 v. 7-3, 6-3, 7-3

Yes, the Pine Lake Prep strength of schedule may be a little weaker than those of Swain, Rosman, Murphy, but 10-0 is still 10-0. If they were 9-1, then you have a beef....but it's legitimately hard to argue a 7-3 team should be ranked ahead of a 10-0 team.

Not that we really care... but the Plymouth Vikings have 2 losses one a gainst Northeastern, the other against Washington. No way they shouldnt be in the top 10 in 1A! But we just do what we do over here in lil ole Plymouth. We should be ranked right with Robbinsville, and no way Pine Lake is better then Plymouth. But polls are opinions, and we all have one of those. The only thing that matters is whose standing in December! VIKING PRIDE!

I think Pine Lake is projected as 1AA and they are 1 of 4 projected to enter the playoffs undefeated. We will find out who is for real and who isn't very soon.

These polls are voted on by people around the state and most of them have only seen one or two of the teams play, if that. I've been on a few of them in the past, and all I could do was try to extrapolate a team's strength from the scores of their games. A lot of voters don't even do that. They see a team that's undefeated and rank them somewhere, mix in a few traditional powerhouses with good records, and turn it in.

When I was on the poll in the late 1990s, I used to publish my 4-A ballot in the paper (I was in Garner at the time), and I'd have people question me because I never ranked Garner first on my ballot; even in 1998 when they made the state finals, I ranked them No. 2 every week. I did my best to be objective, but when it came to 1-A and 2-A, I really was just guessing.

Murphy is probably better than Pine Lake, but a lot of the people voting don't really understand that. For that matter, I'm pretty sure that JK or WRH would beat West Montgomery, but WM has the "zero" in their record and a track record of winning for a long time.

Good thing is these polls don't mean anything. It's all decided on the field.

If these people saw what I saw when we played Tarboro, they wouldn't be ranked as high. And Plymouth not being ranked is laughable. When it comes to the 1A bracket, their name should appear on the final four line as soon as its released.

Plymouth will probably walk the dog in the 1-A East, just like last year. They were in the state finals automatically once the NCHSAA revised the bracket and Princeton got bumped to the 1-AA. Plymouth only had to beat the fourth-place team from the Carolina 1-A to get to the finals.

I think they kind of fall off the radar sometimes because they're always in the 1-A side of the draw, and they like to play 2-A and 3-A teams non-conference, so they don't usually go undefeated. People talk about JK and Wallace and even Tarboro more than them. Then they go to the playoffs and mow down everyone in the 1-A East.

Tarboro is still living off of their 2A dominance of a few years ago, where they went to 5 straight championships, winning 3. Everybody, including me, thought that they would just humiliate 1A competition, but instead, they have been met with a rude awakening. As long as they remain in the Two Rivers conference, they will 9 wins a year in the regular season. I would love to see them actually play Plymouth in the regular season. Heck, it's a simple straight shot drive down 64. I want to say that they have an outstanding shot at representing the east this year, because they beat Southern Nash and Washington, teams that always have massive lines and outstanding defenses. But then, like I said earlier, when I saw them in person, I saw nothing. The score was 28-14, but we only attempted to punt once, lost one fumble, and had the half end a drive. Other than that, we scored on each possession, and their offense only scored 6 points. They ran our fumble back for a score, failed the 2, and we kicked a bad punt snap out of the end zone for a safety. I think Plymouth's chances of reaching the championship is greater than that of some of the other teams that get the accolades. The westerners will say its because the east is weak. But in reference to the rankings, it's hard for me to believe that there are ten teams better than them.

I don't know why Tarboro and Plymouth wouldn't play each other, to be honest. That's an easy trip to make. I used to drive back and forth in that area all the time. It's a challenging game for both teams and it's not like anyone's showing their hands, since one is always 1-A and the other is always 1-AA.

That one's a no-brainer if you ask me. Kids get excited about games like that, too. I remember reading a preview on East Carteret playing JK earlier this season. Kudos to both teams for having the guts to fill that opening on the schedule by playing each other.

As far as the East vs. West thing, I think the West has more middle of the road teams, but the class of the 1-A ranks has been in Duplin County for a few years now. On the low end, I don't think there's much difference. Watching Atkins or watching Lejeune this season is about the same level of not fun.

The way Tarboro is headed, it won't be long before they are small 1A. It wasn't that long ago when they were 3A. Then they spent over a decade in 2A, and now for the past three years, they have been 1A, with no upward trend in sight. Edgecombe County as a whole is losing students. Here at SWE, we are only a few years removed from being 3A, and after being big 2A for the last few years, we are a small 2A this season. And poor little North Edgecombe has been rumored to shut their doors entirely, having the fifth smallest enrollment in the state at 231. Keeping gas in the whips for their teams that barely attract 50 fans is eating away at an already cash strapped system. Plus maintenance, utilities, faculty members that need to be paid.....its just more feasable to consolidate with tarboro. They are less than ten miles apart. Montrez Harrell, former Louisville and now Houston Rockets star is the only thing that has come from there athletically. I think Victor Worsley spent time on practice squads in the nfl....may be wrong. But consolidation may be Tarboro's only hope at moving back up. But I'll tell ya, it's hard to keep families in an area with no jobs and a fear of progress.

That's what we are dealing with in Columbus county. Enrollment is down in County Schools averaging each year. More schools in big cities are usually 4A ,which is good. Rural areas are 1A ,2A at most. But I do see
consolidation coming soon in Columbus County.

It is hard to imagine a better team than WRH right now. The sleeping giant has been awaken.

Didn't JK beat WRH by 3 touchdowns or something like that? LOL. Get real. W.Montgomery or E.Surry will win the state title
