Basketball season is about to crank up! Being a McDowell fan, football can never end soon enough for most years!

MAC-

McDowell should be the favorite with big man Rylan Parkins returning along with some other nice pieces and a very good JV team. Reynolds will likely be their biggest challenger once again.

WMAC-

Last season this conference had quite a few teams battle at the top. East Henderson, North Henderson, and West Henderson should all challenge at the top.

Mountain Foothills 7-

Patton won the conference last year but lost some pieces. Hendersonville should be a contender as well as East Rutherford and Brevard.

Western Highlands-

Mountain Heritage has dominated in recent years but Mitchell tied for first last season. Draughn could also play a factor.

Smoky Mountain-

The conference had a lot of parity at the top last season. Cherokee, Swain, Robbinsville, and Murphy have a shot to make noise this season.

Franklin should be back challenging at the top in the WMAC. Very young last year and added a transfer from Cherokee that averaged close to 20 a game there. Although East has to be the favorite after making the third round and bringing Brewer and his 25 a game back.

Who transferred from Cherokee?

We (McDowell) play Franklin in a few weeks. Could be a good game.

McDowell finally got back on the court today with the girls winning in dominant fashion and the boys winning 63-44 at RS Central.

Rs Central boys beat Erwin last night by 4 so Erwin must be down still.

I was hoping McDowell could play Avery since Avery is decent but snow keeps changing the plans. McDowell plays at South Caldwell Thursday night in what should be a good litmus test.

In other WNC scores-

North Henderson 68
Owen 57

Enka 95
Mitchell 60

Roberson 58
West Henderson 50

Braves lose a close one to smoky in OT
Lady braves cruise by 69 and probably will cruise til they play the #3 ranked team in the country on the 18th

Watauga had an impressive win over TC Roberson last night 65-35.

McDowell @ South Caldwell should be telling for both teams tonight

Reynolds @ Myers Park, Avery @ Watauga, and West Henderson @ Hendersonville will be interesting tomorrow night

While the Lady Titans won by 17, the boys had their first loss of the season 74-71. A very good, close game between 2 good teams. Guard play and turnovers are hurting the Titans with their young backcourt.

McDowell hasn't been playing well despite winning the last 2 until tonight. McDowell clamped down TC Roberson for a big 72-39 win in the first game of conference play. Titans move to 6-1 (1-0).

Lady Titans with another easy win. Only South Caldwell has given them a game at all and that was a 17 point win. I thought Alexander Central might but I have been impressed with the ladies this year.. looks to be a fun battle between them and Reynolds for first. Tough games coming up with Avery and likely East Burke to round out non conference play.

Christmas tournaments get ramped up tomorrow. McDowell hosts a 4 team tournament including East Burke, Avery and Smoky Mtn. McDowell plays Avery boys and girls tomorrow.

Both East Burke teams won, Lady Titans surged ahead of Avery in the 4th quarter after a tight game and won 52-40 setting up a big game tomorrow against East Burke.

McDowell boys blowout Avery 80-51.

McDowell vs East Burke doubleheader tomorrow! Girls game should be a dandy. East Burke could give McDowell a good game in boys too but less likely.

East Burke boys have a couple of kids who play well, but I think McDowell will win by 20+. Having said that, I will be interested to see how Barger Shook, the Cav's center and a good athlete, measures up against your big guy.
The girl's game should be great.

The big for East Burke did ok early on but McDowell wore them down. McDowell has 3 or 4 post guys who can play. Obviously Parkins is the biggest and best but there are others. East Burke needed better guard play. Lots of turnovers.

There were some sour grapes from the EB fans. Lots of complaining about the referee in the girls game especially. Lots of their fans seem to think McDowell was the favorite but East Burke was ranked 20 spots higher and McDowell was playing shorthanded. Pretty impressive win for the Titans.

The Lady Titans host Weddington next in a girls only game that should be very interesting.

The Titans play Avery again before hosting South Caldwell and looking to atone for their only loss this season. Then comes conference play and what should be a pretty easy conference for both boys and girls teams.

McDowell girls beat a solid Weddington team 58-47. Lady Titans play at Avery next in what should be a good game. North Buncombe and Reynolds are their top competition in the MAC but the Lady Titans should be the favorite.

Hickory beats South Caldwell for the Dicks Sporting Goods Classic Boys championship. McDowell will host South Caldwell looking to avenge their only loss.

Newton Conover Girls won the Dicks Sports Goods Classic with a close win over Alexander Central.

They always complain about the refs when they lose. Always saying the comment 2a vs 4a, well they did beat a 4a school twice and a 3a school twice so that's no excuse.

SC couldn’t find the range against Hickory and the Tornadoes ran away with it. Maybe this was an off night for the Spartans, but they looked rough.
N-C and AC was a good game. The Red Devils could give EB problems in conference play, along with Maiden.

I was more impressed that McDowell came back without their 2nd leading scorer and best post player/defender. Their fans were definitely arrogant and lots of yelling and screaming at the refs even in the boys game that McDowell dominated. Our big had 35 and 11.

McDowell is a tough matchup! They are physical and go 8-9 deep before there is much of a drop off. They don’t really have a superstar but they are very good. EB on the other hand is just the opposite. Their second best player, who actually has D-1 offers, is a shell of herself compared to last year. She has battled injuries all summer leading up to season! Unfortunately she is having to play in a lot of pain and hasn’t been able to find her groove.( 29 pts 14 rebounds in State Championships). Another stater has been sidelined til late March, and 6th man has missed 3-4 games in a row. I was surprised EB kept it that close. Hopefully both teams can be full strength by playoff time and make deep runs. McDowells depth is huge for them. They can wear you down!

On her own twitter feed Stillwell lists offers from Lees-McRae and Montreat. https://x.com/stilwellbraelyn?lang=en
Personally, I think she’s easily good enough to play somewhere like L-R or maybe even a small D1. But if she has offers from larger schools, she hasn’t mentioned it on Twitter.
I’m talking about Brinkley. She’s a jr. great season last year, but has several medical issues this year!

Right. I see now that she has an offer from Manhattan. Brinkley can play, but, if I were a college coach, I would take a chance on Stillwell. What they’re seeing is 5”4’ versus 6”1’ and imagining the matchups.
Brinkley could be a solid starter in college, but Stillwell might be a surprise star. I legitimately think she’s might start for L-R at the start of next season and could work her way into the starting lineup for a small D1 school before the end of her freshman year.

McDowell girls put a 30 point beat down on a good Avery team last night and I can see them making a run at the regionals (and anything can happen then).
I don't know about the boys, but I might come over and watch them against SC. I saw the Spartans against Hickory on Monday and they struggled, so I'm curious to see how they match up against the Titans. It's no shame to lose in that torture chamber they call a gym over in Sawmills (along with West Caldwell, St. Stephens and Foard it's the worst gym in the area) but I'm curious to see how they match up with a McDowell team at home that's clearly playing well.

Come on over!

How do you think McDowell girls match up with teams like Lake Norman, N Meck and Mallard Creek?
It looks like the Lady Titans have played quality opponents and their RPI is third in 4A west now, ahead of Mallard Creek but behind the other two. They're close to N. Meck though and might end up as the two seed which would mean home games until the regionals. That would be a huge advantage, because I think the people over there would turn out in droves to support them and they could easily have two thousand people or more at a third or fourth round playoff game when they'd potentially face one of those teams.
