DEAR WNC

SO FUNNY 15 years ago everyone wanted to play Franklin..now no one does..mt heritage prides itself on tough physical football but will not play..Mitchell says looking for someone who runs the spread..lol we can go 3 wide shotgun and run it down your throat..hayesville will drive 200 miles not play...but kudos to swain and Murphy for having a pair

Mountain Heritage to Franklin is a bit of a haul on an activity bus.

Oh please.

Why would anyone not play Franklin ? Even a loss would help prepare for the playoffs. Sounds like your saying folks are afraid. We have a winning record vs Franklin. Franklin is a great team with sold coached. We play Country Day so that should end any talk that we are afraid.

hmm

Ignore BK....he doesn't understand football nor does he comprehend that Charlotte Country Day is simply not that good. Franklin would handle Country Day with ease.

Let BK sing some songs from "You're Mountain" for you. He has a high soprano voice.

The same Franklin that beat swain by 10 last year? Lol.

Can't make this stuff up folks.

I'd be shocked if Franklin beat Country Day. Country Day has beaten teams like Crest, Catholic, Hillside, etc. Franklin isn't even a 2a power. I can name 10 2a/1a schools that can handle Franklin

I would pull for Franklin but don't think they would beat CCD many years. over 20 yrs I don't think Franklin wins more than 3 or 4 times.

I'm talking about now. No contest, Franklin wins. Country Day looked like a one legged man in a butt kicking contest against Catholic last year. Seeing the Country Day destroyed Robbinsville shows me how weak the 1A playoffs were last year when Robbinsville made the championship game.

Lol you comparing franklin to Catholic. Smh some of CD worst teams probably beats franklin

Rville beat swain by a couple TDs and only gave up 9 first downs! Franklin Beat swain by ten points I think.

Country Day was very solid thru 2012. Not much there now. Franklin is still a great program. Watched Country Day wrestle three years straight. I'll take a cheer squad over those wrestlers.

I don't think everyone is scared like you imply. I believe that the stars have to line up right for games to happen. Scheduling conflicts come into play. Scheduling a game between 2 opponents need many variables to come together. Are there some who probably don't want to play Franklin because they are good, probably so but schools must also factor in travel, having as many home games on the schedule as away games, does a date work out, what current contracts and rival games are going to be kept before considering a team. In order for say Owen to keep a game with Reynolds, say Reynolds only has 3 non conference dates and Owen has 5, Owen then makes the game on date 3 but say Franklin only has an opening for game 3. Which game do you think Owen will play? For gate and rivalry purposes, it will be Reynolds. I would love to see Owen play Franklin but it may not be possible right now, idk. It would have been nice to have played When Jager Gardner and Young were seniors. Would have been a war.

I know for a FACT that Owen will not play Pisgah. Heck they won't even scrimmage them now. Pisgah is in same boat with a week 5 game. When Kenny was there they played and it was always a dang good game and gate.

The games were always wars. I don't know about the scrimmages. I know we scrimmage them the last few years which since Kenny and Brett were big buds was why that was. Idk why we would stop at least doing those. The gates I would agree should have been good. Always good crowds.

Owen is really down on their luck. Their offense is still good but their defense resembles swiss cheese. I don't see Owen improving much this upcoming season. They might win 3 or 4 games but that's about it. They have only a handful of strong athletes. That team is still young so maybe in 3 or 4 years Owen will be able to compete with Pisgah. At this point I don't blame them ducking Pisgah because Pisgah could really hurt them.

Pisgah is not going hurt anyone. Geez!
Hayesville has been playing Pisgah so I think Owen and Polk would be fine.

Pisgah will hurt Owen's psyche. Owen used to be a good team that would make it to the the 2nd or 3rd round of the playoffs each year. Last year Coach Ford left along with a host of talented seniors. These War Horses simply could not compete last year, winning only one game against a struggling Avery team. Owen needs to schedule games right now that will help compensate for the damage inflicted on them from a 1-9 season. These kids play hard but there was simply not enough talent and veteran leadership to compete. A team like Pisgah is simply out of Owen's league. Maybe in 3 or 4 years Owen will compete with teams like Pisgah, but not now.

Hayesville doesn't duck anyone. Who can forget when 4-7 Hayesville marched into Robbinsville during the 2013 1st round playoffs and knocked off the 9-2 Black Knights? Hayesville is mentally tough, and although they were blown out by Robbinsville during the regular season, they were not intimidated.

The same cannot be said for Owen at this time. Maybe in 3 or 4 years.

Couldn't compete? Owen played Tuscola, Madison, Enka, Avery, Polk, Mitchell and Hendersonville til late in the game. Really ACR Mtn. Heritage and Reynolds were the only games that they didn't compete in. They are not far. Not there yet but not far. Leadership without question was a problem last year. We had none. Defense is a problem and I am not sure what the answer is. I hope it was that the kids had to learn a whole new system. The reason the O was fine is because it did not change. Same offensive coach. Whole different coaching staff on D.

Owen's defense just need some confidence. Enka also won only one game last year, and that was against Owen. After scoring 48 points against Owen they would not score more than 21 points the rest of the year in any game. Tuscola is an average team...not great but not bad at all, and Owen did okay against them on offense but had serious trouble on defense. This theme on having trouble playing defense and particularly in the early stages of the season hurt Owen.

I'd like to see Owen to continue to grind the ball during the games and concentrate on all aspects of special team play. In a few years when your team has gained experience, Owen will be once again competing for the WHC crown. I just don't see it happening this year and probably not next year either.

Well let's see our top 2 ball carriers were Sophomore and Junior, our starting QB late in the season was a freshmen, our starting fb this year missed all of last season with a broke collar bone and will be back healthy this year was a sophomore. Many of our LB and Linemen will be back and we won't get smaller up front because we were small there already. Our seniors turned there back on the coach's because they lost Kenny but the younger kids responded to the new staff. I look for Owen to be much better this year. I think Mtn Heritage is the class of the WHC this year but I think Hendo and Mitchell will fight for second and 3rd but if Heritage has some injuries they could jump up. I think Owen can finish as high as 3rd if everything goes right but probably 4th or 5th.

I agree, Mountain Heritage, Mitchell and Hendersonville are the top 3 again in your conference. I don't see Owen finishing last because they still have more talent and bodies than Avery. Madison should be better next year and their new coach might surprise the other teams in the WHC. I think Polk will be average at best.

Pisgah and Owen kept having fights during the Pressley-Ford era. One particularly ugly brawl in a scrimmage ended it all for a spell.

I agree that scheduling is a tricky thing. The MAC turning into a 9 team conference is going to make it difficult to schedule with them for the next 4 years. Meanwhile the better WNCAC teams will have to scramble to fill their non-conference slate. They may have to let endowment games go for a while, or do like they old SMC did and double up on some opponents.

You're right about the fights. I do think that Brett has done a good job of stopping it though because of his up downs. I like contests between the 2 regardless of game or scrimmage. We should keep it going.
