Who was/is the best football player from your high school?

Wish he was helped more in classroom. Waste of great talent. Could have played D1.
Believe me they tried, he had the athlete part of the student athlete thing down. He didn't care much for the classroom.
Definitely could have made it
Things turned out good for him regardless from what I've heard

Maybe. But I doubt it Anthony Barbour was at least as good most likely better and was going against 4A competition. And had a pretty good career at state. I think big OTA fizzled out after a year. He took OTAs to a new level as TA
TA took way too much damage at NC State due to his running style and went there with some knee and shoulder issues. He took a lot of hits in high school but mostly due to just dragging players and obviously the size of the players delivering the licks were not college players.

If McLendon played 4A football he would have put up impressive numbers but he would not have had the amount of yards or TDs as the breakaways would not have been abundant. I always wondered what would he have looked like at Indy in 2001 with Chris Leak at QB. I think he would have been hard to handle in a pro set or spread offense where their was a true passing attack. Plus better commitment especially in the weight room.

NC has churned out some great RBs. McLendon is one of the more impressive ones.

At Freedom Leon Johnson is the obvious choice. BJ Emmons had bigger numbers in high school, but Leon went on and set records at UNC that still stand (I believe) 25 years after he graduated. He had a decent NFL career, but he was far and away the most talented athlete I've ever seen at this level.

How far did freedom make it in the playoffs when he was there?

Never won a game. His junior year they started 7-0, were ranked in the top 5 in the state and then lost 2 of 3 to end the season before losing in the first round at W-S Carver in what was the coldest game I can ever remember for FHS. His senior year he had his epic, almost legendary, game against Hickory where he led a comeback from three touchdowns down with a bruised lung but then was hampered for the rest of the season and they lost in the first round again.

For West Lincoln I think you have to go with Mason Avery. Mack George is in that conversation as well.
East Lincoln: Chazz Surratt
North Lincoln: Trent Hopkins/Kenny Raymer

Are you talking about the kid who made Allstate this year from West Lincoln? Good Lord man there are 10 running backs in the state better than that guy I'm not saying he's not good and maybe he's their best ever. But you got guys with six and seven and eight offers up here and he's got none which shows you what people think. Must be some politics involved there.

The original post was who is the best player from your school which turned into various / specific schools not the best player statewide. A player May be the best ever at his school but not all state or even recruited.

A very successful coach in the state had a four star DE and on the opposite side a D2 player. The lowly recruited player was a much better high school player according to the coach and his play allowed the highly recruited player to have much less interference from opposing players. The D2 player did not have the measurables and had a much lower ceiling but per the coach he was the one opponents knew they had to focus on,

Yep. He is probably the best player to ever walk through WLHS, as the topic of this thread asks.
