What's your thought on number of playoff teams

32 in 1-7 and 16 in 8a would have been enough. Half the teams would still have qualified wouldn't need a bye unless you gave all 8a schools a bye so they could all finish same week.

"Problem" with that is it gets rid of a playoff round. And the association makes their money in the playoffs...so they kept it 6 rounds for the money while claiming the reason was it would keep things more competitive...which is a lie.

I would imagine the NCHSAA is bloated and needs some trimming. Then they wouldn't need the extra round of money and could actually make playoffs something earned, not given.

I read somewhere that the NCHSAA has been operating in a deficit for the last several years. They are going to have to host/pay for twice as many state championship games. Hence, alot of teams in the playoffs, and alot of rounds. In 1a and 2a at least, there arent enough football teams to fill out that bracket though.

Bring back the endowment game instead of adding a week to playoffs.

The NCHSAA is not making a lot off the first round of playoffs. Granted, it adds up but not huge. The title games would be a big loser if not for corporate sponsors.

During the subdivided years the schools were the ones that wanted it. Coaches would say they did not like it but when it came down to it they did not speak up. They all liked the idea of making the playoffs.

I think the large amount of playoff teams and the expanded playoffs is all about appeasing the complaints of schools and parents.

If we had done 6 classifications, you would have had about 72 in each class, then 48 out of 72 making the playoffs would make sense.
There are right at 390 football playing schools.
So 288 of 390 schools or 73% should be in the playoffs? That does not make sense. 32 would be 192 which is over 49%.

Once again, the charter school fiasco causes chaos.

Btango,
It's better than 48/59 or 81.4% getting in. Makes sense in other sports - 48/73.

In the current plan it should be 32 - I agree with that

What do charters have to do with that?
