West Charlotte at Erwin

Let me rephrase…. The schools like Asheville and ac Reynolds in the wnc mountains don’t seem to be making deep runs anymore cause we don’t have the horses. We certainly haven’t and Reynolds has had 1-2 pretty good runs the last 7-8 years.
My theory on this goes like this. Love or hate the old school coaches like Wilkins Poss etc but the way mountain teams stay successful are to play a different style of football. Ground and pound ball control etc. When Asheville and ACR did that they were more successful. The spread crap plays right into the hands of the teams farther east. ACR and Asheville have as many or more athletes than they ever have but the teams east of us have more. Those teams they play in the playoffs have seen the spread all year. Asheville and ACR can just out athlete everyone around here normally but that’s here. We need to quit trying to do what everyone else does. We have to out physical the East. I know the lower classifications aren’t the same as the upper but the Heritage’ and Robbinsville’ and so on of the world do out physical their opponents. They do against the bigger schools that give them the opportunity around here as well. Just a thought

I agree to a point. Erwin runs the spread more than anyone and it they have had a lot of success with it. I've seen them beat teams like Charlotte Catholic, South Point, etc with that spread offense. The problem is when you come up against the most athletic teams in the state it's not as effective. That might be the difference Friday against West Charlotte because we are not going to out athlete them. Another thing about the spread is you better have a damn good QB and receivers to do it. I see a lot of teams doing it that have no business running it. As for the old school ground and bound, it's highly effective if done right. Heritage had no business beating Erwin this season but they are a master at that style of play. Last week Smoky Mountain did the same thing and they are successful with it as well. I will say it's extremely boring to watch as a fan. Lol. Smoky had the ball for almost the entire 1st qtr to score once. Erwin scored on two possessions after touching the ball. I told my buddy at the game that that type football will bore you to sleep when you're used to a team like Erwin.

South Point runs the triple option as most of you know. They do this because they don't have the size or speed to match up with the majority of our competition. Yet they have multiple championships with this talent. What they do they do well. If they ran from the spread they could not compete.

We are on the same page. ACR and Asheville have shown some success in the spread as well but it’s when you run up against those teams that are equal or more talented that it doesn’t go well. I think the South Point reference is what I am talking about though. If you can play a different style(which calls for an entirely different week of practice and installation of a whole new defense for your opponent) then you have an advantage. Then if you execute it with discipline and have minimal mistakes then you likely win.

It's almost impossible to stop when done right.

I agree. This year's Erwin team is a little different because we do throw the ball a lot but we also have a really good running back when he's not hurt.

well it’s definitely gonna be harder after that terrible storm took so many ppl homes away

Anyone know if the game will be in NFHS? Didn't see it listed but see both teams prior games. Any reason it might not be on NFHS?

This is an interesting matchup. It will be all about the athletes in the spread by Erwin vs. those athletes at WC. I don't know much about Erwin but would think after coaching in both areas WC will have the advantage with team speed. WC by 10.

That team was the best team Erwin has ever had other than the team that played for a state title in the 80's. They dropped 60+ on Reynolds and crushed everyone they played. It all fell apart when they had a car load of their best players get in trouble for smoking pot at a party. They were kicked off the team and they lost their next two games and that was that. This year's team is similar but not quite as good. Our qb is the real deal though. He's definitely going to break some records over the next few seasons. I really hope the frigid temps Friday night doesn't slow him down too much.
The question is did they beat Mountain Heritage.
I'm joking anyway Erwin has a very good team this year and to be honest we were very lucky to not get beat to Erwin I guess Erwin's line averaged 50 pounds a man bigger than us the total yardage was 380
for each team with the fumble being the difference.
I watched Erwin put 56 on a good Brevard team the next week and thought how did we beat them its football is how ..

I'm concerned about a #1 seed getting thumped 58 - 0. Erwin needs to go down the mountain during the regular season to play better competition. They have Spartanburg and Greenville Counties nearby. Playing a 1A school doesn't make you reach higher.

Like I said, nowadays there seems to be a massive difference in our 3A and 4A teams up here vs schools down off the mountain when our good teams used to be able to play with anybody.

We're building athletes down here. These kids are HUNGRY! They want a better life beyond high school football. It's the mentality they're being grown into.

Still Brevard just beat the brakes off of a team that beat the reigning 2a champs and Erwin beat Brevard fairly easily WC must be the real deal
