Sad to see that the Union Pines/North Moore football series has come to an end after 52 seasons. The series ended with UP winning the last 11 games, and finishing with a 39-18 all-time record over the Mustangs. Of the last 11 wins, only two were shutouts and only one win was by 42 points or more. I have seen much more dominant rivalries.
I do not understand why Albemarle, a fellow Yadkin Valley 1A conference member, wound up on the schedule. Nothing against the Bulldogs, but Albemarle is not the same program as it once was during its state championship runs in the 2000s. Last season, Albemarle went 1-10, as its only win came against an undermanned South Davidson team. Also, seven of those ten losses were by 42 points or more. I don't know if they even fielded a JV squad last season. Not sure of what's happening in Stanly County regarding redistricting and merging of some schools. I'm not sure what those folks want, as they claim they want to take their present four major high schools and drop down to two or three major high schools serving the county.
It would have been better if UP could have scheduled Pinecrest (huge gate), or even another 2A or 3A team instead of the lowly Bulldogs.
