The 56th Annual Cook Cup will be played this week at Catholic. This is the 30th time the teams will battle for the Cook Cup named after legendary Country Day coach John Cook.
Catholic has won 5 of 6, and is looking to make it a 4 year sweep of the Bucs. That has not happened since Catholic won 5 straight from 1986-1990.
Catholic comes in off a 21-0 bounce back win over Providence Day. I saw a number of positives in that game most notably the defense and being secure with the ball. Catholic turned the ball over 4 times vs Christian in week 1. I do not recall them having a turnover outside of a turnover on downs vs PDS.
The defense also rose to the occasion, I don't think it is on par with last years defense, but they have another good defensive unit at CC this year.
One area CC needs work on is rushing the passer, they have not gotten much pressure in the first two weeks and going into conference play they will need to change that. Especially vs teams like AK and South Meck who can sling it.
The Bucs are coming off a strong W vs Robbinsville, but after seeing them vs Myers Park I don't think they have what they need to take down Catholic. It just is not the same over there on Carmel Rd and it's been a sudden drop off too.
The Bucs do not have much size on their line and have a number of players going both ways, while it isn't supposed to be terribly hot on Friday that could be a factor going into the second half.
I expect Catholic to come out fast on offense similar to what they did vs Providence Day only I expect them to sustain that momentum this week.
I think last week they were still shaking off some rust so this week we'll see a more familiar well oiled machine on offense that we are used to seeing.
Special teams may also play a role, sophomore Brian Jacobs took a punt 95yrds to the house last week only to have it brought back due to penalty, kid can fly. Watch for out for him.
I expect CC to win this game handily, maybe 35-7 range. Wouldnt be surprised if it was closer or a wider margin of victory.
