I think it’s more an issue of open enrollment and travel ball influencing scholastic ball than a charter issue, per se. Especially open enrollment in high population areas. The announcers kept talking about Hayesville being the first ‘traditional’ school to win the west since 2011, but only 2 of those years were actually charter schools. Deeper issues that need to be addressed. I think ‘get rid of all the charter’ folks are overbroad and would rethink that if it happened and Hendersonville and Farmville Central and others fall back to 1A to fill those spots. Plus it still wouldn’t address the absurdly dominant ‘non traditional’ programs in both men’s and women’s in the west, because they aren’t charters. But there should be no actual private school in the NCHSAA, and any open enrollment public school—charter, magnet, whatever—should get a multiplier based on the population that has that school as an option.Congrats to the Jackets on the win and title. Had my doubts I'd ever see another 1A mountain team win a basketball state title in the time of charters, it's a big deal.
That call was so bad even the announcers pointed it out, and typically announcers will try and stay out of ref-bashing. Made it worse that it basically stopped a fast break. And if Chatham Charter had won the game on free throws at the end of regulation because of that block call 90 feet from the basket it would've been fitting but terrible. Thank goodness they could at least review that.I agree wildcat.
Looked like the refs helped CC out for awhile. I slow motioned some calls and it wasn't the right call. They gave CC a timeout but Hayesville already had stolen the ball.
I know it hurts when a money team losses to a traditional school. 😁
Hayesville didn't play particularly well the first 3 quarters, but I think Chatham Charter deserves some credit for that because I've gotten to see them a few times now and their strength is taking people out of what they want to do. And playing in a college arena with that depth perception difference didn't help, either--I would be shocked if 2 made 3's wasn't the season low for Hayesville by a good margin. I think it shows a lot of strength and character to be able to win a big game when you're not playing well.Great win and congratulations Hayesville BUT I think on any given night Hayesville could beat them by 20+ Chatham was a real good team but not as good as who Hayesville had previously beaten. Again it’s a great win and that’s all that matters. NCHSAA 1A State Champions
Just my opinion
