The Bears passed their 2nd test with flying colors last week as they took a couple of freak plays to the bank and ran away with momentum last week. This week they end their non conference slate with one last conference challenge with the enigma known as Surry Central as the bring the Mayberry Blitzkreig to Dobson. MA should never sleep on the Golden Eagles considering what happened 2 years ago; however this isn’t the same team from last year. It’s going to take more than Palacios having a career game to beat this squad.

2.East Wilkes

The Ronda Cards sat down and took a load off last Friday after a very successful non conference slate. However they will need it these next few weeks as they hit conference play. First up is their northern rivals headed by longtime East HC Monty Chipman. The Vikings represent how East Wilkes used to be under his reign while the Cards are in their present system now. It could be an intresting game between these two. NW hasn’t been hit hard yet besides for a quarter vs. Forbush and in their scrimmage. East can def hit with anyone so North better be ready. It might not be an easy win for the Cards but it’s hard to tell with rivalries sometimes..

3.Wilkes Central

The Eagles return to action after a week off vs. a 4-0 West Wilkes squad who hasn’t really been tested besides 1 game. West will present a challenge to the Eagles as they feature a solid QB who can run the offense like no one’s business. However I see Central having more to prove here. West can put points up; however Central’s offense hasn’t been worldwinning yet despite the two backs working for it. Defensively besides the Watauga game Central hasn’t looked bad. They already have a shutout which is a plus. The Eagles badly needs a game to prove it’s naysayers wrong. This could be it.

4A.East Surry

The Pilot Card’s topsy turvy season hit a bizarre climax last Friday as they had to go to a last minute flea flicker to beat West Stokes. In an incredible sense of irony this game repaid the 2013 matchup where West pulled out the last second win. However this week the stakes and situation get incredibly different for the Cards as they head to Guilford county and play an improving Ragsdale squad off a close loss last week and a big win over SW Guilford. Ragsdale scheduled this I’m sure as one of their easier games but East has nothing to lose. Given this is an endowment game the stakes can be wacky.

4B.North Surry

The Greyhounds got a wakeup call last week as the super athletic MA squad just showed off in the 2nd quarter; however North didn’t totally cower back either as they played hard until the end. Many teams would question theirselves naturally but North has a solid shot to come back out as their usual selves this week as they hit the road to Atkins to open the conference part of their schedule. This game will be as much North Surry vs. Atkins as it will be the new North Surry vs. how North used to be. Atkins is new into the Air Raid this season and run it similarly to how North did in the Avery Smith days; granted with some pistol thrown in. It’ll be a interesting test for the Greyhounds to open the conference slate as a result of it.

4C.West Stokes

The Wildcats got a taste of their own medicine last Friday as East pulled a trick out of the Wildcats playbook to snag the win very late. For a team known for their late comebacks it had to have been a hard blow to West’s spirits. However a team’s season isn’t done with a loss to a rival and the Wildcats start the conference slate on the road vs. a very hard to figure Walkertown squad. Last year the Wildcats humilated the Wolfpack on TW Cable but this year is hard to predict. This game will show if Walkertown’s truly a victim of their scheduling or not.

7.North Wilkes

The Vikings of Hays were in a experience early last Friday they’ve only felt one time this year at a scrimmage and not in season play so far: getting outhit all over the field. Forbush showed up ready to play and were leading NW. However the Vikes went to one of their tried and true plays of the year so far in the QB bootleg and it went for paydirt and momentum swung their direction rather fast and epically. The Vikings badly needed to be brought to earth before conference play as they will be tested off the bat by the Ronda Cards. The Vikes will need to shore up all the loose ends rather fast and play to their talents or else it may be a rough go stopping the Ronda based Juggernaut.

8.Starmount

The Rams got a much needed week of rest after a brutal non conference stretch that ended better than it started. The Rams will be thankful for it once conference play hits; they play their longtime bridge partners off the bat at home. Elkin’s not the Elkin they have been neither is Starmount. This game never fails to be hard played or heated; and I don’t expect anything less here. A win will give the Rams more momentum while a setback may motivate them more. Could be a boost either way here for the Rams.

9.West Wilkes

The Blackhawks were surprisingly tested last week by Dave Haynie and Bunker Hill. They managed to pull the win out late but it’s not a good sign for West to be in a barn burner with Bunker Hill. That 4 game stretch was supposed to make the Blackhawks look pretty; not look iffy. The question is however was it a case of big headedness that had to be hit out of them or a case of things to come for the Blackhawks? They will atone for their 4-0 start one way or another with their first two conference games as they have WC this week in Moravian Falls.

10.Ashe County

The Huskies got a much needed rest week after a rather respectable performance vs. West Caldwell. With the brutal stretch over for the Huskies I expect them to perform much better; however it won’t be easy as they have a 4-0 and very hot Alleghany squad off the bat at home. For the Huskies to win they will have to be ready to thud with the Trojans or else it will be a long night despite Ashe having the wide open offense.

11.Forbush

The Falcons managed to score and have a more respectable game last week; however that isn’t enough to get a win. The Falcons are on quite the hot seat this week as they host a potentially surging Carver squad who managed to have a competent game last week vs. Parkland. Forbush’s future is quite literally in their hands this week. They can either play the Jackets tough and have another thriller or they could fall apart and let the Jackets have momentum. Hard to tell what will happen in East Bend Friday.

12.Alleghany

13.Elkin +1

The Elks have finally learned how to win after grinding out a very close game vs. South Stokes last Friday in Sauratown. South had a chance to get the win but Elkin surged thru the FG attempt and ran it back to make it a comfortable victory. The win gave Elkin their first multiple win year in 3 years and some momentum heading into conference play. However it won’t be easy as they face a much improved Starmount squad off the bat in conference play. Starmount will have the size edge while Elkin has more athletes. Something will have to give Friday night.

14.South Stokes -1

The Sauras snakebit season continued last week as they let the chance to possibly win their game slip away off a botched FG. The Sauras badly need a momentum booster as they hit the bye and start conference with Prep. They may have it this week as they head to Caswell county to play an in transition Bartlett Yancy squad who have had a similarly snakebit season. South needs to let their D take control and ball control all night or else it could be a thriller.

15. Surry Central
16.WS Prep

17.Bishop +2

The Villains sure shocked almost everyone (including muah,) with a last minute win over rival Atkins who have had a solid series here lately with the Villains after beating Bishop on JV last year. The win was a much needed morale boost for the Villains and could start a much more competitive streak for them when they could have used it. This week they face an enigma in the Greensboro Panthers; a team comprised of home schoolers. GP’s 2-0 vs their own kind so Bishop shouldn’t overlook them at all. However there’s another solid chance at a win this week before they hit the conference head on. Bishop needs to make what momentum they can have stick or else it may be a long few weeks ahead.

18.Atkins -2

The Camels had a rather close game slip thru their hands last week. Time will tell if that was a fluke or a sign of things to come for Atkins. It won’t get any easier for them this week as they open conference play with a bound to be hungry North Surry squad in a battle of the air raids. Atkins is a rookie to the offense while North’s used to it. Neither squad are new to each other though as they have played since 2015.

18.Carver +1

The Yellow Jackets had a solid performance vs. a down Parkland program on both levels last week. Their defense let up 34 points but they scored 2 TD’s that's a somewhat good sign for the Jackets after giving up 40+ most weeks and not scoring. However they have to be more consistent to make noise in conference play. They face a hard to figure Forbush squad in East Bend to open the conference slate; the Jackets needs to put together a perfect game all night to get that win they want. Just gotta wait and see.

19.Walkertown -2

20.North Stokes

The Vikings came sooo close last week vs. Patrick County; it was a real heartbreaking night for them I’m sure. However not all is lost for the Vikings of Danbury. They are getting a much deserved off week and resting up. However they are in better shape than last season; Sessoms is making them tougher. I expect them to make it the rest of the season. Maybe they can get another shot at a W too.. if not making it to the end is a win all in itself.
