I was fortunate enough to get to play for Coach Hutchens from ‘02-‘04 and they don’t get much better than him, on the field or off. He demanded a lot from you and expected your best each and every day (classroom, field, and weight room). There is no doubt that’s why we had as much success as we had while he was the HC during my time there.
A lot of his staff (and former players) have gone on the be very successful HC’s in their own right. Coach Hutchens knew how to run a very successful football program from top to bottom - not to mention a program that is full of pride, tradition, and incredible community support.
He had been sick for a couple of weeks and just went to the doctor a few days prior to his passing.
The whole community is heartbroken because he was still a fixture at our games even though he retired from Starmount in 2009. Him and his wife had built a new home in Pine Knoll Shores in Carteret County but he would still come up for the big games and special events we had.
Last time I saw him was at our playoff game at Mount Airy.
