RPI

Still trying to figure out how Northwood in 2A girls East has a #10 RPI rating but gets bumped down to a #17 seed. Mighty confusing and I've been confused for years!

As I have said, RPI needs to go with us going back to what we can see on MaxPreps and know where the teams stand. The NCHSAA wants everything they do to be so most don't understand and they can do changes in the rankings that are not noticed by most of us ! They still use Maxpreps for everything else and can't post the scores on the NCHSAA website without using MaxPreps.

You can see where teams stand on NCHSAA website. They start to show RPI about midway, maybe 60% through the season when there is enough data to start. How does someone not understand RPI as I've stated, it is just a mathematical equation that is given to everyone! The NCHSAA cannot just change someone's ranking as they please. The equation can be done by anyone if they think their team is being treated unfair. You know what cannot be proven, is why MaxPreps ranks teams the way they do. They do not share their equation with anyone.

MaxPreps uses the same equation that the college and Pros use. I can't imagine the Colleges or Pros using RPI, lol.

Here is how. The first column is their RPI rank. The first 11 teams are considered conference champs in their respected division. They are seeded as first based on RPI. Then everyone else that qualifies is seeded by their RPIs. I think this goes to show that conference champs may should get an auto bid, but the field should be seeded by RPI top to bottom.

Side note: Did Bunn opt out or oversight on everyone for not putting them in?

MaxPreps uses the same equation that the college and Pros use. I can't imagine the Colleges or Pros using RPI, lol.

MaxPreps doesn't give their equation out so no, they don't use the same. If you do some research you can see what college uses. Each sport has it's own formula they use for different rankings. In the past they have used the RPI system.

Pros are also pretty straight forward. Win your division or win a wildcard spot. Doesn't really matter if you are talking NFL, NBA, NHL, MLB, etc. If I have to go into those details, you probably shouldn't be arguing on here. However, trying to rank 30ish teams is a lot different than 300+.

I promise you every coach knows where they stand with RPI. And if for some reason they don’t, they got someone on staff that does.. I bet ole Buzzcoach even understands it. How do you think HSOT figures it out, they don’t have any special privileges.

Probably the leap frog rule eliminated Bunn….since Southern Nash and Franklinton did not get in.

Why should RPI be used to seed playoffs? Conference champions should always be rewarded first, in my opinion. That has always been the way teams qualified for state playoffs and should stay that way. Want to go? Win conference. Back in the olden days, in high school as well as college, those were the only teams that qualified. Now there’s too much money involved so everyone qualifies, especially in the current 1A. That makes the first round at least all blowouts. Nothing is perfect but RPI after seeding champions is complete, is the best NC high schools have had in awhile.

I'm not against the RPI system. I think if you allow conference champs to have an auto bid but seed everything based on RPI, it would be more accurate overall. Being ranked 10 and falling to 17 is crazy because your conference is tough or you've played a tough schedule and beat some good teams. I believe Forbush girls bball is ranked like 4th but because the #1 team is also in their conference they're seeded like 11th.

Also, some of these teams are seeded with the conference champs because they come from a split conference but they finished like 5th but played bad teams OOC so their record is 11-11 (.500). Should they also be seeded with conference champs. I think that messes things up the most.
