I know this is a football board and I am aware many of you dislike the RPI. In women's soccer as of today Carver is the #32 seed in the Western 1A. They have 0 wins and have scored 0 goals. I find this quite intriguing. Your thoughts?
Bingo! I think we need to reduce the number of teams in the the playoffs. I would like to see a minimum winning percentage of say 20% or you can not be a playoff representative. . A 1-9 FB team or a 3-17 BB team does not need to continue their season. We do rarely see an upset but we see many more mercy rule routs. Often these games are after a 4-6 hour bus ride.As of this post, they are #31 in RPI. I know they are 0-8 but their OWP is the highest in all of 1A west at .627816. #1 Mountain Island Charter has a OWP of .605428 and then no other team is in the .6+ range. Next highest OWP is .56.
There are four, two win teams, four, one win teams and six, zero win teams. Then there's teams like East Wilkes that are 7-11 but their OWP is .326928, Queens Grant at 5-9-2 with OWP of .326244, Alleghany 3-10-2 with OWP .440303.
I hate rewarding a team that is winless, but not sure who else would be better to take that spot? By record maybe East Wilkes but seems like they played a really soft schedule.
Maybe this isn't an issue with RPI, as much as, an issue with having too many teams make the playoffs. No way that 65% of the teams should make the playoff (assuming that it is 32 per side for soccer).
