Trying to stay away from split conferences as much as possible. Here are some potential 6A conferences for the west, with some 7A schools added:
Western 6A/7A
Watauga
TC Roberson
Asheville
S. Caldwell
Freedom
AC Reynolds
McDowell (7A)
It's a two hour and six-minute drive from Watauga to TCR, which I think is the longest drive for this conference.

Mid-west 6A
St. Stephens
Statesville
N. Iredell
Kings Mountain
Ashbrook
Alexander Central
Kings Mountain to N. Iredell is an hour and 24 minutes. There might be one or two 7A schools they would add to this from Mecklenburg or Iredell County.

Metro 6A
Sun Valley
Piedmont
Harding
Catholic
Central Cabarrus
Berry
Olympic
Not sure what the longest drive for this conference would be. Probably none more than an hour

That leaves 10 6A schools in the Triad and they would probably go into two different 6A/7A conferences. I'm not really sure how they might work that out.

I wonder if it would have been better if they went up to 6 classes for next 4 years and then after 4 years look into going 8 classes. Just a thought.

As far as the far western part of the state I don’t see how you don’t avoid split conferences. Should look something like this. McDowell is always in a tough spot especially since they are going to be 7A.

WMAC 6A/5A
Roberson 6A
Asheville 6A
AC Reynolds 6A
Enka 5A
Erwin 5A
West Hendo 5A
North Hendo 5A

Mountain 7 5A/4A
Franklin 5A
Smoky 5A
North Buncombe 5A
Pisgah 4A
Tuscola 4A
East Hendo 4A
Brevard 4A

Western Highlands 3A/2A
Hendo 3A
Owen 3A
Polk 3A
Mountain Heritage 3A
Madison 3A
Avery 2A
Mitchell 2A

SMC 2A/1A
Swain 2A
Murphy 2A

I think you could just as easily do this:

McDowell and the Asheville 6As stay in the conference I outlined above and you have one less split conference by keeping the 5As together.

This one makes the most sense.

I decided to just run with this and here's what I've got so far. Again, I wanted to avoid split conferences as much as possible. I also didn't do the entire west because once you get east of Charlotte, I'm a lot fuzzier on where those schools are. There are probably also some charter schools that will have to be added in here or there. I also didn't mess with the 7A schools except McDowell, let someone from Charlotte or Greensboro figure those out.

Corvian Community 2A (FB)
Thomas Jefferson Classical Acad. 1A (FB) only fits here because they play football, nowhere else to put them otherwise.
Sugar Creek Charter 2A no football
Queen’s Grant 2A no football

Langtree Charter 2A no football

Western Piedmont 1A Charters and Preps (non football)
Carolina International, Concord 1A
Bonnie Cone Leadership, Huntersville 1A
Jackson Day, Charlotte 1A
Valor Prep, Concord 1A
NC School of Sci. & Math, Morganton 1A geographically isolated but nowhere else to put them because they don't play football and don't fit in the conference with Thomas Jefferson Classical

Edit-added Lake Norman Charter into SW 4A/3A
Edited again to reconfigure Foothills 3A/2A and added smaller conferences with charters. I think I'm done now.

Maybe I overlooked or just forgot but with fewer teams in each division have they said how many would make the playoffs. I’m sure it’s not set in stone but has there been an idea about this?

It looks like Shining Rock barely has 100 students. How many students are at Haywood Early College? I think that drops enrollment numbers too.
Shining Rock is the only charter in Haywood County. The best I can see they have around 600 students and currently offer K-10 with a grade increasing each year as that 10th grade class ages up.

According to GreatSchools.org, Haywood Early College has 176 high school students. That would definitely reduce the enrollment at Tuscola and Pisgah significantly.

If you split those students evenly between Tuscola and Pisgah and added them back to those schools, they both would still be 4A. They would be in the top 5 in size in 4A instead of the middle.

How does the Early College work in Haywood County? From my understand, in Gaston County students who go to the Early College aren't allowed to play sports.

Correct. If they were allowed to participate in sports then both schools would have to add the number to their adm. So in Haywood is would be Tuscola adding 176 and Pisgah adding 176. That’s why they voted not to allow it. If a kid wants to go to earl college that decision should be made before entering 9th as I understand it.
