Pinecrest & Union Pines

Union Pines is happy to now have 1A North Moore as their county "rival" game. I can promise you, they don't want any part of Pinecrest

UP has been playing North Moore since NM opened in 1965. Heck, they even played Elise, predecessor to NM in 1964.

As for the UP-PC rivalry itself, Pinecrest is 18-4 versus the Vikings. UP did go 3-4 versus the Patriots in the 70s. The schools did not play each other in 1973, 1974, 1979, 1980, 1985-2000, and the rivalry stopped after the big fight in 2010.

As for the game itself, there was a lot of trash talking between the two teams. But, I felt like the referees did not have control of the game. Pinecrest head coach Chris Metzger did not have control of his team, nor did Union Pines head coach Ryan Riggan have control over his squad. When I look at the video of "the fight" it trips me out how fast Coach Metzger ran across the field to get in Coach Riggan's face.

Besides the Patriots and Vikings not playing each other in football, they even quit playing each other in basketball, both boys and girls hoops. Of course, if you have a fight on the basketball court, fans can hit the court very quickly and create much more chaos. But, with any rivalry, especially football and basketball, you will always need extra security.

I want to see UP and Pinecrest go back at it. Sure, PC will win the lion's share of this rivalry, but if you look at the mid 80s through 2000 when the schools didn't play each other for the most part, UP could have won a few. But, this game brings in a huge gate irregardless of whether the game is played at Pinecrest or UP. If both schools think that they don't need the $$$ that this game brings then they are both freaking crazy!!! At least the fight was on the field and not in the stands or the parking lot. I am hoping for the rivalry to resume in 2017. Maybe next year, if Woodberry Forest or the Q Foundation decides not to play a second game with Pinecrest in 2016.
