Oak Grove @ North Davidson

As mentioned in many post, Fridays game will not be a great way to open the rivalry for OG. However, this is not going to be a "walk in the park" type of game either for ND. If ND does not execute, OG is a well coaches team, and they will take advantage of poor execution. After reading articles from local papers and other triad based news outlets, many of them have the underlying sense that in the split between the two schools that OG took the "cream of the crop" when it came to coaches and potential talent in the coming years. Brian Flynn and Mark Holcomb both have well experienced coaches around them who do a great job and as far as talent goes the Welcome-Arcadia community has produced just as many great athletes as the Midway community. I dont have a dog in the fight but I find it interesting that people assume ND will fall hard in the coming years and OG will prosper greatly. The way I see it this is a great rivalry in the making and for it to be a good rivalry that means it is a toss up year to year on who will be the victor. Excited to see what both teams have to offer on Friday night.

Game Score:

ND-56
OG-0

They both will prosper in the future. Ledford will struggle as they lost of big piece of Wallburg!

The biggest thing isn't midway or wallburg. Its the fact that oak grove gets half of the arcadia kids from Friedberg, while North gets the Arcadia kids from northwest. Arcadia may not have good little league records over the years, but they are the most populated area and give numbers to a football program for depth. Especially later when those kids get cut from soccer, basketball and baseball. Arcadia has good athletes, they've just always been spread out across a few sports.

Umm I dunno. Looking at some of the Pee Wees in the county football league. Ledford looks to have ALOT of promise in the future. They have size and athletes.

Also interesting that Oak Grove seems to be dominating the middle school league as well, wonder when will that translate to High school??

Middle school and high school are different animals. North Davidson won middle school championship after championship for a long time... with raw athletes and simple plays. Middle school coaches, while committed to their craft in most cases, just aren’t wired to do the same job as a high school coach. Running off season workouts, watching film, developing position players and schemes... and so much more.

High school changes things. Weight room programming is crucial, as is building a culture that encourages attendance and participation once the parents are no longer the reason they get to practice.

Some of the best athletes in Davidson County are walking the halls, but sitting in the parking lot waiting to drive home at 3:15 every school day.

Retain and develop the raw athletes. Attract and develop the late bloomers. Encourage and develop the average kid that can be a good practice partner while preparing for the next team. They all have a crucial role.

I coached at Tyro Middle from 2008-10 before I went into the Marines. We went 6-2, 6-2 and 7-1. Only team we lost to every year was North, and they literally had twice as many kids.

My boys went to high school and never won more than three games. Yes, it's different. Also, coaching helps...

Ledford has had good teams in little league for a while now. So has East Davidson. It hasn't mattered for the high schools. East in particular because the little league team ran a single wing, which was beautiful to watch but didn't go along with what Brown Middle and the high school did.

Oak Grove will showcase those Middle school champs next year on varsity with a year of experience. Their JV team went 8-2 last year, so they translated well to JV ball.

And Oak Grove wins a crazy JV game on a 99 yard pick 6 with 2 seconds left.

Final score OG 27 ND 20.

ND was up 20-13 with 2 1/2 minutes left.

Coaching does help. Right now, if The Dispatch articles can be believed, West Davidson claims a moral victory each week in the post game interviews. Something is wrong over there. There is talent not being utilized.

I recently heard it referred to as The Disgrace by my lady's father lol. And yes, when mediocrity is acceptable something is wrong.

Hard to have a moral victory when you beat dem boys ferm Denton 14-0.

I hope things change at West in the near future! There is definitely some issues that need resolving. It is sad, I feel and am not alone, that WD's best chance for success is not always put on the field!!! I hope this is taken as constructive criticism and doesn't offend or rub anyone the wrong way. Just my opinion, and a few others as well....

West Davidson has plenty of linemen and strong farm kids available. Their best chance would be to go old school and run a single wing, double wing, or split veer. They dont have the athletes to run modern style offenses. They simply don't have the speed to do so.

I heard the Oak Grove starting RB was out tonight, hurt his foot in last week's game so that will probably hurt their run game. OG will probably struggle to move the ball against the ND defense without any kind of running game.

I saw West Davidson JV play last year and was impressed with their size on both lines so they have the size to pound the ball effectively. They have a pretty strong RB and ran a lot of veer plays that were hard to stop. I know their JV team last year gave the Oak Grove JV one of their two losses. The problem this year is their defensive secondary, they have a bunch of young kids and not much speed. I watched some film of their first varsity game this year against Wheatmore and they got burnt several times deep on pass plays (but Wheatmore has a very experienced QB and very good receivers). I think part of the problem is their coaching and scheme, although overall talent plays a role on what they run.

Oak Grove, not having a Varsity team last year, gave schools the opportunity to play a few junior and sophomore varsity players when the Oak Grove game rolled around on the schedule somcemthere was no Friday night game. Not faulting them for doing that at all. West did that, if I’m not mistaken. I want West to have some success, but I don’t see it happening except for every now and again when loads of raw talent just happens to come along all at once.

North not playing with as much hurry up as usual. Scores another one before the half to make it 14-0 with 40 seconds left in the half.

That was the longest high school game I ever witnessed. Refs enjoyed conferencing after each penalty. Lots of kids cramping. Chain crew looked kind of inexperienced. Finished up a little after 10pm. Good crowd. Sportsmanship looked good (I left with 3 minutes left). Even after the OG kid got ejected, and the refs were conferencing with their backs to the players on the field (which you should not do), the two teams were talking with each other, shaking hands and being friendly.

The score indicated a small, young team who had many key players going both ways. Oak Grove is going to give a lot of teams in the conference headaches.

I think oak grove could still win 6 games on the year which is tremendous in year 1 of varsity football
Oak Grove is well coached and seems to have good play calling with good in-game adjustments. The only problem I see this year is since they do have several kids that play both ways, if they get 2-3 injuries of key players then they might really struggle. I was at their game last week and noticed they had their QB playing safety on defense for a good portion of the game. I was kind of surprised about that, I don't many teams that play their QB on defense.

Oak Grove has a nice little qb. If it wasn't for his scrambling ability OG would almost certainly have had negative yards last night. That 77 kid is HUGE but needs work on technique. Oak Grove has talent but lacks experience and it showed, as we all knew. They will be a force to be reckoned with next year.

The crowd was big, like a CPC rivalry game from a few years ago. Nice ring of onlookers around the stadium.

The atmosphere wasn't mean or hateful but had a lot of respect to it. Good clean game by both teams, I didn't notice anything excessive.

On to East Davidson!
