NY Coach Suspended for "Running up the Score"

I was actually going to start a thread about running up the score but this means I don't have to.

What constitutes running up the score in everyone's opinion? Since we have the running clock here in NC after 42 points, I think you should put subs in after being up by that much. On the other hand, I think the first half of any game is open unless you get up by 42 or maybe 49.

Once the subs are in, do you have a problem with them running the offense normally? Or should the subs who practice all week just run it up the middle every down?

Thoughts?

I've always been of the opinion that you score much as you can before halftime... As for backups, they are your future so yes they should be allowed to run the offense per normal...

And I think the running clock is more than enough

My Forest Hills Yellow Jackets would have been in deep trouble back in the early 90's. Coach Lowery pulled the starters early against North Stanly and they only put 5:00 minutes on the clock for the 3rd and 4th quarters. Final score was FH 91 North Stanly 6. The state record for most extra points in a game (13) was set in that game by future Appalachian State kicker Jay Sutton. Record still stands today. I think it was 70-0 at half.

Since some of you decided being informed was less important than quickly responding, you probably missed this:

“Shaver decided to keep his best players in the game despite being up 35 points in the fourth quarter.”

I have no problem with winning big, but keeping your starters in up 35 in the 4th is trying to make a statement (they were playing their rival school).

If you’re up 35 in the 4th, get your young guys in for experience and run your offense and defense like you have all game (none of that run into the line stuff). I don’t care if it’s a 70 point game as long as it’s not starters pouring it on as the game winds down.

I agree with that

If you can’t win by more than 42 points, then you should have to end the game once that scoring margin has been achieved.

Like in NCHSAA soccer. Once a team goes up 9-0, the game is over.

There are some teams that you can’t beat by less than 42 (Trinity, Jordan Matthews, etc)...
and, in my opinion ,it is more disrespectful to play “not to win”.

Get the reserves in early and let them play. But if they play with a running clock, that takes away from running the offense in game situations. I'm thinking cut the quarters down to 8 minutes instead of running clock.

I read the article. Just wanted opinions. I agree with yours.

Last night up 42-0 in first qtr SWO brought in the subs and Jvs. It didnt make much if any difference. 55-0 at the half. We took the 3rd qtr off and they scored twice. Final 62-14. Our #1 back only got 4 carries in first qtr. with 98 yards and 2 TDs. Besides playing the cheer leaders and maybe some fans we could not do any less. We would come to the line and the QB would watch the play clock and not run a play until just a few seconds were left. Most all runs were between tackles and up the middle. And I agree with its no more than 42 up then at that point the game should be over.

If you can't win by more than 42 points, why continue the game!! Would I risk my starters in the 4th qtr? Heck nah, but is it fair like in the case of SWO for our starting RB to only get 4 carries? No. Guys bust there butts in practice for 4 carries!

If a team goes up 42, you should give the opposing team one offensive series. If they can't score then game over, better rule than playing not to score. Stupid!
