NH @ Hoggard

First time that both teams are undefeated when playing. NH is ranked between 2-3 in the state in 3A and Hoggard is ranked 6-10 in the state in 4A. Both teams have great passing attacks and solid defense.

NH play each conf opponent except SB the week after Hoggard played them. I am sure there was a message sent from each game. I am sure Hoggard would have done the same thing.

That's an interesting take on common opponents, but the bottom line is that the Mideasy conference offered very little resistance for either school. Both New Hanover and Hoggard handled those teams with ease ... which they should. Friday night will finally provide a good game in the Wilmington area since the New Hanover - Cape Fear in early September.

I have seen both teams multiple times. I feel one major factor will be Hoggards D line. They have been very good and they will need to get pressure on Walston. If not, Walston will torch any team. CF and Laney both held NH in check in the second half and the main reason was pressure on the QB. If Hoggard can do it without blitzing it will be a big advantage. NH loves the wr jet sweep and the D line will look to blow that up as well. Also, looking forward to seeing the best WR and the best CB in the conference matched up. Wiz is a special player and I feel if he were 6"2 or bigger he would have major D1 school all over him. Kemp is a D1 CB with multiple D1 offer, he faced a D1 WR in week 1 and shut him down and will have his hands full. Kemp is much bigger so I would think mostly slants and quick outs will go Wiz way. Both teams have 4 very good WRs and Hoggard has a very good TE as well. Neither team blows you away with their rushing stats. Hoggard starting RB has been hurt since their 4 game.

Hoggard

17 – Longest winning streak in the series for Hoggard, which went from 1996-2010.

64 – Points allowed by the Vikings this season.

70 – Most combined points in a single game. Hoggard won 49-21 in 2000.

203 – Rushing yards for Hoggard’s Keevin Thompson in the Vikings’ 25-15 win in 2014.

1973 – Hoggard’s first win in the series. The Vikings lost the first five games.

NEW HANOVER

3 – Fewest combined points scored in a game. The Wildcats kicked a field goal for a 3-0 win in 1976.

7 – Shutouts for the Wildcats, including four in a row from 1976-79.

10 – New Hanover’s longest winning streak in the series, which lasted from 1978-87.

451 – Points scored by the Wildcats this season.

1994 – Year with largest margin of victory in the series. The Wildcats won 52-7.

I have been looking forward to this for a long time and the game is back where it belongs on the schedule ... the last game. Overall and individual matchups are interesting. The best player in the conference (Wiz Vaughn) against the best defense not only in the conference, but the state. The quarterback matchup is outstanding as well - The big play, big risk gunslinger (Walston) against the smart efficient Jones. Jones has decent speed and can get out of trouble if the pressure is heavy. He isn't running nearly as much as he did last year and can be a weapon this game if Jerreau isn't able to do much. Walston isn't very mobile and if the Vikings put pressure (which I expect) on him there could be some problems for the New Hanover offense. New Hanover has a good defense as well, but not as good as Hoggard. Daley and Brown are outstanding, but you don't hear much about them as they have been over shadowed by Hoggard's defense getting a lot of notoriety.

I like Hoggard in this game and I don't think it's going to be close. The Wildcats seem like they stall at times on offense this season and Hoggard is the more disciplined team. Hoggard's defense and Hoggard's offense able to move the ball consistently will be the difference - Vikings by 14-17 points.

New Hanover was lucky to beat Garner. I’m the polar opposite of a Garner fan. What happened in that game that it went down to the wire? Garner had a nice lead and choked at the end...I’m not sure how they choked but it has me doubting New Hanover.

Hoggard's d-line is excellent and Hanovers is no slouch just smaller. Kemp will be a difference maker in this game if Hanover chooses to challenge him. That D1 WR he supposedly shut down in week 1 had no QB to get him the ball. I would want Jones as my QB in this game because of experience and profiency. Walston has greatly improved and he proved himself to me in watching the Garner game. As far as weapons for the QB's, Hanover is 2 steps ahead and that will keep them in the game. I think if one team can establish something going in the ground game to keep the defense guessing a little it will be huge. Who's going to win? I don't think anyone will walk away from this game disappointed about effort or talent these 2 state title contenders will show. Good luck and good health.

I would take NH based on toughness of schedule other than an avg Carolina Forest team I really don't see a team that Hoggard has played that is worth a hill of beans. NH has played Garner who is very much like CF and Cape Fear and when healthy they are pretty good. Take it from a SC fan LOL! Hoggard This game is a pick'em!

I will say that Orange had a good team before their QB went down. Now Wilson is out. I feel Orange was better than Car Forest.

Well it's game day. Simmons has NH by 1. I think these are two really good teams and either team could win. I think hoggard D line will control the LOS and get pressure on Walston. I think Hoggard CB slow the NH big plays. If Hoggard can't get pressure than NH will win. Hoggards offense will control the clock and they are fine taking what they can get. Hoggard win 30-17.

Star-News predictions

Alex Riley, UNCW Writer: It’s opposites attract with explosive offensive (New Hanover) vs. stout defense (Hoggard). This one will be tight -- Hoggard 28-24

Dan Spears, Asst. Managing Editor: If New Hanover keeps the laundry off the field, the Wildcats have the athleticism edge to win a wild one, 41-35.

Jackson Fuller, Sports Production: Wiz Vaughn and Freddie Taylor make enough big plays in a 28-21 New Hanover win.

Matt Hinson, Sports Production: New Hanover’s overemphasis on the passing game will come back to haunt them against a great Hoggard defense. Vikings 28, Wildcats 20.

Mike Foster, Digital Sports Reporter: New Hanover’s offense will pull away in the second half for a 42-28 win

Anonymous MEC coach: Hoggard has a big edge in special teams. They will win the game 27-17.

Anonymous MEC coach: The winner will make the least amount of mistakes.

Dustin Dorsey, WWAY Sports Anchor: Hoggard’s consistency and play calling will lead to the Vikings win against the Wildcats 31-28 on a game-winning field goal by Jeremiah Kim.

Whew saw that coming told somebody at work this is not a good match up for nhhs. Not enough up front for nhhs to compete in a slugfest.

Front 4 dominated the LOS and Hoggard used LB blitzes very effective and Walston never got comfortable. NH needs a plan B but too late for that now. I thought NH secondary covers well, nothing easy for Hoggard pass game. I thought Hoggard could have run more but they mixed it up well. Hoggard had way too many penalties and need to clean it up. Great win for Hoggard in dominating fashion.

Hoggard should be favorite in the east. I saw a portion of the game no weak spots. Can they stop #34 is the only question? They will score a ton on SC.

That's the question. He is at a different level and I haven't seen any team that is built to slow him. Plus SC O line is very good. Long way to go before Hoggard even has a shot at SC.

Hoggard dominated in all three phases of the game and coaching ... especially coaching (very surprised by that). Vikings defense proved it's one of the top defenses in the state by holding one of the most explosive offenses in the state to seven points. New Hanover's touchdown came on 43 yard pass that was a 50/50 ball. Neither QB had an impressive game with their arm. Jones used his legs and that was a difference and the offense took what the Wildcat defense gave them. A lot of running and short passes (long hand offs) to move the ball down the field. Special teams had New Hanover pinned back deep on their end of the field. Walston for New Hanover had someone in his face all night and forced a lot of throws (two interceptions). Coaching staff for New Hanover has to take the blame. No adjustments were made at all that I can tell from the Wildcats on both sides of the ball. Good solid win by Hoggard

7 – Shutouts for the Wildcats, including four in a row from 1976-79.

Not sure where you got this stat, but Hoggard beat NH 7-0 in 1977. I was on that Hoggard team. David Kaufman caught the TD from Tommy Jones.

Hoggard won that game in 1977 with a fourth quarter touchdown pass and a goal line stand to seal the victory. Ray Durham was a great coach and hated to see him go to Jacksonville.
