In the Cummings thread I made a reference to LOTR and its Ages of Middle Earth. I decided to have some more fun.

First Age of ND football: Birth-1966. From its birth until 1966, ND played 2A football. From 63-66 ND played in the 2A area state title game every year, losing three times before winning the fourth. North then left 2A and went to 3A.

Second Age of ND: 1967-76. In 1967 Don Palmer led the Knights into 3A off an area title, and continued to have success, though we experienced more competition and more losses as a consequence. ND tied Shelby for the 1975 WNCHSAA title and won multiple conference championships. Don Palmer retired after 1976 and remains the greatest coach in ND history. The field is named after him.

Third Age of ND: 1977-2000. The longest age, we continued to play 3A football and went up to 4A as well, coming back down and going back up every few years. Success was still there in the regular season, but not in the playoffs. North did not become a mainstay in 4A until 2001.

Fourth Age of ND: 2001-present. Started off with a bang, winning our first 4A conference title before losing to Chris Leak and Charlotte Independence. Won other conference titles and got to a 4A Regional in 2012 before losing to Porter Ridge. Came back down to 2A per the NCHSAA last year, this year is the final year for our last large class.

Fifth Age of ND: starts next year as Oak Grove becomes a four year school and takes students for all four grades from ND and ledford. So it begins... When this season ends.

Something interesting that I learned.. North was “born” in 1952. The didn’t field a football team for at least 6 years. Not sure why, but I see no evidence that any of the consolidated schools (Midway, Welcome, Arcadia or Reedy Creek) ever played football.

I knew North came into being earlier than its football program. Wasn't sure specifically what year so I just used birth haha.

No but they were winning State Titles in basketball those years. Research Carroll Youngkin sometime!

North also won basketball titles in the 60s and 70s, right? And baseball lol. Got lots of hardware between that and softball... National champs in softball.

The 1955 yearbook for NDHS has three sports. Boys and Girls basketball and baseball. Boys basketball had a heckuva year!

Carlton Hurt was a legend at West and Frederick was my World History and Civics & Economics teacher!

Carlton Hurt was a solid ball player! His father coached a future great Duke player, Mike Lewis, at Enloe. I learned that from Benny McKaig (Wake Forest).

Duke had a few real good players from WVA back in the 1959’s and 1960’s. Remember Jerry West and Hot Rod Hundley made it real popular in coal mining country.
