NCPreps.com All-State Team

Todd Gurley (Tarboro, Univ. of Ga and the pro Rams) was a 2A back and if he had come along a couple of years later he would've been a 1A back......Think he can play?? lol...........

I've stated that stats are not the only thing that I go by in picking this team. It is an important thing but not the only thing.

Can we agree that NC has a lot of talent and these things get harder each year to pick.

At least I do try to honor kids at all levels (classes) by doing individual all state teams.

It's a two-way street, do some of these players go to these college camps or visit these campuses for junior days. Do their coaches help out with recruiting?

In covering recruiting, I've seen high school kids from freshmen to seniors taking trips to all the schools during the football season. I get numerous tweets about kids going here and there to visit. A lot of them have no offers yet but at least they are trying to get in front of the college coaches.

You always say this about your home team players not being on a list or in some ranking(must be a Clinton thing), but one thing you said stands out. You can not speak for other backs/players, and also you can not speak for their competition in relation to your home team. So you've basically confessed to not being qualified to judge who goes on the list. Now that you have admitted to not knowing about other backs you can not really speak to who should be or who should not be on the list. I've seen several backs that could go on that list. It's a hard task to find the best of the best. You can rack up the most yards in a season and exit the 1st round, which makes the stats suspect.

I was speaking on recruiting not this list see previous comments....also i started by talking about those twins from East Bladen not Clinton also i listed other guys in my post

Todd Gurley is one of my examples...Keith Marshall from Millbrook was rated higher and looked who shined once they got to UGA.....i did say a few 2A guys shine thru but majority small town kids get overlooked for over rated 4A kids all the time

If they are good like Gurley, their time will come and people will notice. Sometimes their situation turns out better if they are not rated high. Granted there are players are also late bloomers or play better in a different system once they find a fit. Yeah it can be a dice role at times.

One of the toughest things for a college coach is to determine how good a player is when factoring in competition. Also, they need to determine if the player has maxed his physical potential as compared to other recruits, where his football IQ is and what it can handle.

Yea, in an interview asked Gurley what high school teams were the toughest he ever played against and guess who he said was the toughest? Edenton/Holmes his senior year in the playoff. Holmes would had won the state that year if they would have beaten Tarboro they came up one yard short. A lot of big time recruits are over rated especially 4 and 5 star guys.

Gurley was a 4-star RB in high school and was highly recruited by many D-1 schools. I sure wouldn't say he was over looked. Btango hit the nail on the head when he talked
about a kid having room for growth in size and playing ability. If a high school kid is playing 90 to 95 percent of their ability, they have no room for growth in their game. They may be one heck of a high school player but they need that growth to be good at the next level.
