You're right. I'm sure they will still end up being the top dog. But you're telling me that Shelby can start 0-5 from playing ranked competition and still be in the top ten of a weekly poll simply because tradition and the fact that they still have a good chance to win the ship. But you know what....it sounds like I'm putting too much thought into a meaningless poll. I understand it's just an opinion and don't matter overall, so I'm just gonna leave this one alone. Way too many people this stuff personally and too seriously. I don't want to sound like one of them. Y'all win. You're right. I'm wrong.
We were just writing to say we understand your questioning and did not mean to appear so abrupt. But now you have tucked your tail between your legs and limped away.
Don’t do that. We like the debate.
We have had issues with rankings for all time.
The old college polls were rife with bias and agendas. Still are.
And most are wildly inconsistent, especially early in the season.
The Maxpreps overall poll mentioned above just came out for this week and 2A Shelby, ranked 5th in preseason and 10th last week, has fallen to 25th. But that same poll confirms that the two teams that defeated the Golden Lions are worthy of 7th and 8th place rankings. Both schools are bigger than Shelby, way bigger. 25th seems like an exaggerated fall.
We have discussed playing up in classifications in another recent thread, but Shelby has always seen the benefits of those tests far outweighing whatever damage occurs to an in season rankings.
It has always been about obtaining the rings. And our schedule helps us get there.
Due to our continued success, finally some that contribute to the polls do consider seriously how SOS impacts one’s record.
Northeastern has had significant success recently as well. That does influence some early season polls as a nod to their expected improvement. Same as Shelby. Both teams still must go out and make it happen.
