Mountain Valley 1A/2A predictions

I had a chance to see Elkin the other day at a 7 on 7.

On the bright side they had some speed at a couple of WR's and the QB can chunk it more. Downside is they are surprisingly small for an Elkin team and their Center isn't huge. Line play and #'s will make or break them. If they can overcome those 2 come MVAC time they can win a few. But it depends on those 2.

I guess Boles and Horton are no longer at Galax if they ever were. Sounds like they are back at WC. Both are good players, how big of an impact does this have on Central?

Maybe the going got too rough up there as far as the discipline. The coach that i had spoke with over a month ago had said that the Boles kid had already been late for workouts and had been warned that it wouldnt be tolerated at all. Havent heard much talk out of Wilkes Central in regards to him being back. I would imagine that he is. That makes Wilkes Central's backfield a lot more explosive. As long as his attitude and work ethic mesh with what the team already has.

QB Colin Ellis - Ashe Pre-Season POY

Interesting,
I had the chance to see a lot of the kids from East Wilkes last week. Look like a good group of young men who enjoy being around each other. I saw they have a transfer from Lexington on the team. They are loaded at the skilled positions. If the young line play's well they will have another really good year. I do think they are one year away from being great. IMO, next year they can win the state.

How's practice going for the teams? Haven't heard much other than East Wilkes looks to be a very strong team again.

What position does the Lexington transfer play at? Is he a white kid, black kid, whats his size? I watched EW practice already and I couldn't readily distinguish who the new kid was.

Me neither Ill. Usually the newspapers do a good job of covering it but they have all been slack except Ashe's. Wilkes's paper did a real good job of covering it last year but they have been slack so far. Disappointing.

Im hearing the Lexington transfer is no longer at EWilkes. Im hearing that he was an athelete and game changer. His family moved back to Lexington.

That would have probably been a huge pickup for East but was probably a bit of a culture shock for him.

East has to be the favorites at this point regardless.

Any news out of Central? What's the scoop on Horton and Boles. I had heard Horton is defintley back at WC but not sure about Boles. I believe Coach Turner had a major operation as well so there are a lot of factors in play for them.

Seen East's official team picture for media day in the newspaper on Twitter. I counted between 41-43 on varsity in it, good solid amount of depth for a 1A school especially compared to before and when Adkins started there.

He has moved back to Lexington due to job situation. He would have fit in great at East. He had been welcomed in with open arms.

Haven't posted in a long time, been busy with work. Glad football is finally here.

Ashe has a lot of skill players back and probably the best WR and QB in the conference. Very young team this year though, only about 8 or 9 seniors. Not a lot of experience up front on either side of the ball, but bringing back all the linebackers from last year will help on defense.

They scrimmaged today, surry central i believe, but with the rain hitting about the time play started, things were a little slow and sloppy.

Eric, I think you describe East Wilkes also. The same question marks entering the season.

I saw Wilkes Central in their scrimmage with 3A St. Stephens yesterday. Both teams went tit for tat. With Wilkes Central scoring on Big plays mainly. St. Stephens scored more methodically. Wilkes Central's Boles did not participate, possibly due to transfer eligibility issues. However when he returns, he may be able to shore up their defense, cause it looked pretty bad. Offensively, they will be fine. As always they have good speed at the rb and wideout positions. They may use a 2 qb system from time to time. Overrall they looked good offensively, and terrible defensively. Also, not a lot of participation for a school that big 700-750 students.

About like I figured. Most would think WC would run St Stephens over given they haven't always been talented but they had a decent year last year. Good for them.

From what I understand (I know a guy who played for NW,) Boles isn't eligible to do anything until week 3 or 4. He transferred out of NW after the first game last year but it took a while to do paperwork and all that. If he'd commit he'd be a great addition for them at CB or something in the backfield along with running it. Defense was their Achilles heel last year and they gotta fix it if they want to be serious about contending. I said the exact same thing after we scrimmaged them last year and I will this year too.

The #'s isn't a surprise given what I heard around the mill about kids not wanting to come out. That'll be another factor: how they will handle all their drama since the start of the summer. With Turner's medical issues that may hurt worse.

Did you see Central's JV's?

How did the scrimmage go? Any early info about Central?

I should have done this in 1 post I got over-anxious lol

East Wilkes scrimmaged Avery tonight. Offensively the backfield has a ton of weapons. They all are hardnosed and hit the hole hard. There is a good bit of speed and versatility there. The Qb looked good, made good decisions with the option attack and threw the ball well. The defense started off a lil sluggish, but then came into its own. This EW team offensively can be a jaggernaut and they have quality depth at the skill positions. The offense will have to carry the defense early on. Seems the defense has a player or two out and hampered with injuries. But, overall EW looked fairly good.

Yes, I thought East looked good, but I do believe Avery may be down this year. The key for East will be overcoming sum early injuries and line play. If the young line players on both sides of the ball step up East will be really hard to handle. The QB is solid and he has weapons all around him. East lost some speed from last year's squad, but the guy's that have come on the scene are just as fast.

I spoke with someone that has seen West Wilkes scrimmage this year. He said they are loaded on the line of scrimmage with 3 guys around 270 and a running back around 215 that can pound it up the middle. Sounds like they may be a sleeper.
