Legion Baseball

Don, do have or know the schedule for when legion starts. I’m planning on watching some games this year.

In Area IV, Wilkes is new.

In Area III, Matthews is back. I believe they've been in and out over the years. Union and Queen City moved from Area IV. And I believe Mt. Airy is new.
Mt. Airy has had a team for several years now. Not sure they has finished a year yet though. Wilkes comes and goes like the weather. Has been in Area III.

With Lincoln County no longer having a legion team, Cherryville Post 100 has changed its base school to Lincolnton High School. That means they can recruit players from the following high schools: Cherryville, West Lincoln, Lincolnton, North Lincoln, and Maiden. All Post 100 home games will still be played at Fraley Field in Cherryville.

Does that remove them from getting kids from Burns? I know in the past some Burns kids have been with Cherryville and some with Shelby.

Coming from Mike London twitter, 18 had signed up for Rowan American Legion on Sunday. According to Coach Graham “this is a great group”. I’m looking forward to when season starts.

Wondered about that, too. Burns has contributed good players to Post 100 for a long time. Cherryville has had a few guys from Kings Mountain and Bessemer City, and even a North Gaston and Bandys player as well. There was a Maiden player as recent as last year, and back in the 80's NC Preps poster AceTenSevenEleven (from Maiden) played for them. Hope they have success getting some Lincoln County/Maiden players to come out. This could be something of an opportunity.

Linkman, Post 100 was called the Linc Cherries (Short for Lincolnton/Cherryville) back in the day. This time, maybe we could talk them into a throwback to the early 60's name, except this time, call them the Link Cherries. They like you quite a bit over there (and they don't like just anybody if you get my drift) so that might be a possibility, too.

For the most part yes. There could still be some kids that live in the Burns district, but are closer to Cherryville. That kid would be able to choose which team he wants to "tryout" for.

With Cherryville moving their base school, it is really effecting several teams. Both Gaston teams will lose players to Cherryville. Lincoln County not having a legion team is surprising. There is good baseball being played in that county, and they could put together a good product on a legion field. Cherryville hasn't been up to their standards lately, so from their standpoint, it's a brilliant move.

I'm willing to bet, Lincoln County will eventually try to start a team up again and that will make things very interesting.

With the base school being Lincolnton High School it is doubtful that Post 100 would get any Burns players since it's not likely that kids who live in the Burns district are closer to Lincolnton than Shelby. Of course Lincolnton High School is further away from KM and Bessemer City than Cherryville so they probably won't be getting any of those kids.

It's not really surprising to me that Lincoln County is not having a team. They didn't have one last season and Lincoln County has struggled in recent years to get enough players to have a team and keep enough to finish out the season. There is no doubt that they could put a good product on the field. Lots of talent out of East Lincoln and North Lincoln year in and year out. However, the best players for NL and EL usually have little interest in playing legion ball. As someone said, the challenge is for Post 100 to convince players from North Lincoln and Maiden to player legion ball.

Most of the players who attend East Lincoln will probably live closer to one of the Gaston County base schools than Lincolnton High so I don't see them losing many players to Post 100. Of course Post 100 could get a player or two from EL or Lincoln Charter if their domicile is close to Lincolnton High School.

Mr Lincolnton, it would suit me if Post 100 would go back to being called the Link Cherries. But if they do. I assure you it won't have anything to do with my name. LOL. It would be the Linc Cherries.

What's shocking to me is Hamlet Post 49 is not shown as one of the 43 teams this year! They made the 2024 NCAL State Tournament as Area II Champions.

My bad they moved to Area III!
