IMG ACADEMY NEEDs Teams For Next SEASON:

Man you are talking some years ago. Things has changed if you play IMG on ESPN IMG and Paragon will make sure your school will get paid. The power at NCHSAA said they had no problem with a school playing on ESPN if the main station don't want to broadcast their game and if both schools agree then ESPN could do it. The local stations get the first opportunity to broadcast games in other words.

It cannot be on live tv on a Friday night. The NCHSAA will not sanction that. ESPN does not do high school football on Saturday once the college season goes into full schedule.

I know for a 100% fact that ESPN broadcast a high school game last year and paid zero money in fees or to the participants.

Two of the top Alabama high schools hosted ESPN games last year. ESPN paid them $1,000. The schools are located in the top two tv markets which lowers their costs.

So the power to be that in charge of that particular area of sports for the NCHSAA isn't being truthfully regarding Friday night football games in NC?

I do not think it is a question of being truthful but understanding exactly what you are asking. Were you the one that inquired with the NCHSAA? What was the exact question(s) that was asked?

To overturn the rule on live television the NCHSAA Board of Directors would have to vote in favor of it. The reasoning in the past has been they do not want a television game broadcast on a Friday all over the state to take away from the gate for other schools.

The rule was that no live television except the title games. Then they allowed the regional finals. These were telecast by Time Warner. Last year they went to the Thursday night games with the same caveat for non TWC areas. If an area did not have Time Warner (now Spectrum) a third party could produce and televise games during the regular season. Spectrum will not do any live high school sports nor the high school football show. That is gone for now.

In 2006 Indy and Butler contracted with ESPN for a Friday night television game. NCHSAA stopped that. With it being the last game of the regular season they would not allow it to be played Saturday either. ESPN was non committal on Saturday games and definitely so now because they pay for a set number of college games through the conferences. In 2007 all Herbstreit Challenge games in Cincinnati were televised live by ESPN except for the Indy v Elder game. Game was on a Friday night. I think the game was shown live outside the southeast but was on tape delay in the Carolinas. Per a conversation with an ESPN employee to me they will make more in advertising with less logistical issues on two low end non Power 5 teams than they would a top flight high school game and that is why they are not very interested in high school games on Saturday (and now Thursday somewhat) once the college season is in full gear.

Note that Time Warner Sports Channel shut down after the state basketball championships. There were no spring sports title games broadcast by a television or cable company. I think Flo Sports broadcast some title games but that is an open segment now. My hope is that UNC Public Television will broadcast the state title games as some states do but I am not sure it is cost effective for them.

Yes Sir,I inquired to NCHSAA and that what was told to me from the man in charge of high school sports in NC. According to the power to be at NCHSAA that's in charge of high schools sports things will be okay this season they are talking to several outlets to broadcast the games in all sports in NC. They are talking to UNC Public Television but a final decision hasn't been made yet.

The person in charge of the NCHSAA is not a man!!!

I am not sure how I can make it more clear for you but let me try to explain it. There are no college games (FBS) on Friday August 25th and only a three that Saturday. As I have written numerous times once the college season goes into full schedule (which is Thursday August 31!) ESPN is not big on Saturday high school games. For several years ESPN has loaded up on high school game the weekend before college season starts which they are doing again this season. I have not written a single word about ESPN and Friday night games EXCEPT that NC does not allow live televised games on Friday per their regulations. This included Time Warner last season.

It is time to move on.

You repeatedly said that teams should play in the Corky Kell in GA and that they were having out of state teams. I relayed this info to a defending SC state champion head coach and he was told that was not correct. A state champion head coach in GA told me that there was no interest in bringing in out of state teams but if they did it would be border teams and that was very unlikely.

You have repeatedly requested NC teams to play IMG (among other out of state teams). Do you have a connection to the school? Does Kevin Wright call or text you?

I assisted a promoter of high school football games a bit over the last few years and I assisted a coach with some logistics on out of state games a few times. I have been to about ten high schools games or events televised by ESPN. Here is what I can tell you. Figure out who you want to see play in 2018. Contact those schools head coaches and ADs. If they do not return your calls or emails go see them. Have a legal contract drawn up with a guaranteed payout. When you meet with the school representatives present a certified funds check for half the guaranteed payout. Contract with the facility that you want to hold the game. Set up the television and broadcast rights after getting the broadcast approval from both schools and their state associations. Set up all sponsorships. That is it. I will come the day of the game and volunteer in any capacity that you need assistance. You will want to be very discreet and not announce what is going on or post about it until you have all contracts complete and the logistics worked out.

It is up to you now.

The person I spoke to who in charge of high schools sports at the NCHSAA was a man and he's working to get a network to continue to broadcast all the high schools sports championships and regular seasons football games even on Friday nights in the future. As he put it to me is if the main broadcast in the state that has the first choice to the games does not want to broadcast the game then another network whether it ESPN etc. could do the game if the schools involved decide to let them do it. Well if a school want to go on ESPN then they could during their first three non conference games on a Friday or a Saturday. Yes, I know who's in charge of the NCHSAA and I said I spoke to the gentleman who's in charge of high schools sports and getting them on television for the fans.

Yes I speak to coach Wright at IMG some times. When I did speak to the individual in charge of the Corky Kell Classic he did say to me that they though about it and he did want the info on a few teams from NC. because they have brought in a team not from GA. the previous year. Do your promoter have any connection with any schools in NC that are willing to play IMG if so let me know and I will contact them and ask them myself I have no problem with doing that. All i'm trying to say that all the noise on social media about how good their school are and getting all the ink in the state then put up or shut up and be willing to play the best teams not the ones you know you can defeat show how much talent you have and how good you are on the field or play. Do not knock the kids because they want to go to IMG to get a better education and achieve their dreams most of those kids that go to IMG go to better themselves to make sure they will go to somebody school not necessary a D1 school but most will get a free education at somebody college because they played at IMG.

How does Texas set up their TV games? It doesn't seem to have a negative effect down there. You may not get 20,000 fans in one stadium as much anymore, but the schools seem to be doing just fine.

The promoter is concentrating on Texas high schools. Currently Texas UIL teams will not play IMG.

Not sure how many games are on tv in Texas.

The Allen AD told me that playing out of state teams is normally not as good financially for Texas schools. The visitor may bring 500 fans and there will be the high school fan that wants to see a different or real good team. A standard visitor may bring 3,000 to many times more than that.

Texas is different than basically every other state due to the football culture, the money put in the programs, size of some of the schools and stadiums. The size of the bands, drill team, cheer team, dance team. Having a JV team along with one or two freshman teams. The population and growth. The large metro areas and suburbs with schools on top of one another. Approximately 1,400 high school 11 man teams. Twelve FBS schools. It is a spectacle to go to a big time game there. State title game fir the big schools draws in the 40,000 plus range.

Who is the best team in NYC this year? Let them play them, bet you get slammed too.

The Kell has never had an out of state participant.
Mr. Hunter stated that after the two year contract is up this year and if an out of state team can sell the number of tickets each teams must sell and if it's a good team they will consider it Middle Creek,Shelby,Reidsville,Wake Forest,Heritage, etc. you will get the chance to play in the Mercedes Benz Stadium in the (A).

You wrote that an out of state team had played in The Kell before.

How many tickets must the out of state team purchase to resell?

What would be the payout to the team?

The Kell is trying to go to the new Mercedes Benz Dome but looks like the GA State Stadium, the old Ted Turner Field, may be the site for a few years.

Sure they will because the Kell has become a losing proposition. As much as everyone is dreaming of a national pre or post season national showcase the reality is very few of these make $$.

HS football requires travel for 50-80. Basketball maybe 20-25. Huge difference in overhead expense and in early August or late December it's just not a draw for most fans.

Btango, even at 1A level for some teams, gate receipts equal 30,000.
Most though loose money after over head.
Football also supports non revenue sports as soccer, tennis, ect. This amount is for a year in 1A.

I agree with you Goto but we were mainly referencing the showcase type of events and out of state travel games requiring hotel stays.

Looking at it from a more general view I am not sure most, if many, football programs can be 100% self sufficient? Pay fir the equipment, insurance, coaches, travel, field upkeep, and all other overhead? May be I am wrong.

Most schools cannot afford to give up a home date to chase a game with little or no payout. Losing a home date can hit an athletic department hard.

$30,000 gate is usually 5,000 paying for a regular season game. That's a very strong gate for the majority of NC schools and not many average that.

If Shelby with it 7000 seat stadium who bring in more than $35000 a home game cannot afford to travel and pay for all the thing you mentioned above then they are doing something wrong because they are bring in at least a quarter millions dollars a year just from the gate not talking about everything else they sell at the games.

Shelby does not fill up the stadium for all games but does much better than the vast majority of schools. They did put just short of 10,000 in the stadium for the 2015 Crest game. Do not know exactly how many paid. Not sure if they bring in $250k off the gate for a season. May be some years but a lot of variables and there is cost involved plus gate splits in the playoffs. I am sure they also have some lower attendance games when a dud is the visitor.

If Shelby loses a home game by traveling and they make zero on the travel they set themselves back that full gate plus the concessions.

Last season Colquitt County offered Mallard Creek $15k to travel there. MC accepted but then Colquitt said it would be $10k. The trip would cost them at least $15k. MC does not draw well but they did not want to lose money on the game and lose a home date. Colquitt's stance is they can bring in an area team that will bring more fans than MC and pay them may be $5k. They save on the payout and do better at the gate. Colquitt spends huge on their team. When they played at Valdosta in 2014 they stayed in a hotel the night before the game, did a movie game day, and were fed three meals. Valdosta is a conference game and located about 40 miles from them. With it being a non school Friday the staff wanted to make sure the players were not out getting in mischief.

I know they do because they paid Westlake High School in Atlanta $14,000 for a two year contract. Also I think they have a school coming to them this season from out west I don't know how much they are paying them to come to Moultrie,Ga. They average about 13000 fans a game and when they travel they travel well even the band. Shelby need to start spending some of their money and once in awhile bring in a national ranked team for their fans to see different players from other parts of the country.I'm just talking about the money they bring in from regular season games not the playoff money.

hornet, have you been to a game at Colquitt? I have and I doubt the stadium holds 13,000.

They are playing a private from an LA County suburb. Not a powerhouse by any means. Not sure why Propst scheduled them.

Since you are in tune with Colquitt you know they offered another NC school $5k to come there. School wanted $10k and was driving back after the game to make numbers work.

Just looked at the IMG website. For $78k plus per year, they ought to be guaranteed a free ride to Duke, Stanford, Vandy or any other school of their choice. That number, by the way is for a female high school basketball player. I was too shocked to look at the other sports.
Glad my kids were neither that good (at least in my mind) nor that I was that wealthy!

Sure I've seen Colquitt play in person in many time and the stadium does hold almost 13000 and yes they have the money to pay schools to come to them. Maybe the school his a good private school and i'm quite sure if coach Propst didn't believe they wouldn't be competive and didn't have the money to pay them he wouldn't have scheduled them. There must have been a good reason he only offered them $5k when he offered $14k to a school in Atlanta for a two year contract to come to them back to back and the school in Atlanta had a top tier stadium and was in the highest classification in the state but Propst stated that the Atlanta school would make more money if they came to him back to back so they did and had a chance to beat Colquitt County in the season game although Colquitt was national ranked and a power house in the top classification in the state of Georgia. No team is unbeatable especially in high school on any given night.

IMG also give a kid financial aid if they need it just like most prep or private school does. Cardinal-Gibbons and Word of God help with financial aid if the kids is a good student academically.

The last I heard was about 1000.

2,000 ticket minimum and there is zero payout to the participating teams. Only a few non out of state teams could sell that and it would be some Alabama schools or may be a few SC schools unless they are willing to gamble on the $13 per ticket.

Can you use punctuation to make it more legible. I know you are probably rushing through on the phone but it's tough to read.

Colquitt was down last year. They lost five games albeit against good teams but a subpar season. Rush pushed the envelope fir travel games when he was st Hoover.

Was told today that Colquitt has seats for just under 10k. I know they have some standing room with limited sight lines. Long time booster laughed at me when I asked if they averaged 13k per game. They have finished the new facilities which should be top shelf, Texas like.

The Atlanta school was probably Tucker as they are going to Moultrie both seasons. Eastern suburb of Atlanta. Three hour drive, no hotel needed. Equivalent of Charlotte school getting over $20k when buses and hotels are factored into the expenses. Doubt Tucker brings s large crowd but the two Charlotte schools would not bring a hundred.

No sorry it wasn't Tucker my friend, and this particular school has almost as many fans when they practice as they do doing an actually game and it has a tremendously fan base and following. To pay Rush over $100000 you know they have the money and a good booster club, and their band travel first class also. Colquitt County is a good school to coach at even for an assistant coach.

I know Colquitt has big pockets. I have been to games there and seen them on the road. Last time was 2014 at Valdosta. Saw Hoover play in person six times when Rush was the head coach, three of them were out of state travel for Hoover. Friend recruited Birmingham, went to practices there with him.

If the opponent is bringing a big crowd, they are selling more tickets. Remember my post about the AD from Allen (Texas) saying playing a local team brought them a better net profit. They can pay a team less and sell more tickets. As I have written numerous times the financial aspect always plays a part.

What was the Atlanta school? I need to stop in for a practice or game when I am in Atlanta.

It was Westlake High School always has a good fans base and will travel they love the Lions whether they win or lose. Plus their men and women basketball team travel all over the country to play in some of the top tournaments in the country, i'm surprise they haven't been invited to the HSOT/ Holiday Tournament in Raleigh.

Westlake churned out a lot of big time players but have not been a state title threat. Even when Cam Newton was there they lost several games each season.

Colquitt played Westlake in 2010 and 2011. Propst had not built the program back up to elite status only being there a few years. Colquitt was nowhere near a national power when these games were scheduled.

Not really sure the Westlake games are relevant to the games I was citing.
