Watauga would beat almost every 2A team in the state but 3 or 4 of them on any given night. I don't understand how anyone could believe that Watauga isn't a worth opponent. Maybe I'm looking at it wrong because I'm involved, but I'd be happy to sit with you and watch their film and we can walk through how to game plan against their offense. I'm talking 20+ formations with numerous plays in each formation, 2 and 3 different blocking schemes for the same play depending on how the defense is lined up. The only way to beat them is to straight up outman them player for player and make no mistakes. They have an amazing coaching staff and two platoon, very few kids play both ways (only when they need to against tough opponents).Yes, the CVAC is a competitive league, but take a look at what each team did outside the conference. To me, that is a tale-tale sign of how good a team is or can be down the stretch. Take a look at the top tiered teams and they either played NO one or beat NO one. For example, Maiden nor Bandys played no one outside of conference. Maiden posters will argue that Watauga is a worthy opponent because they are 4A and undefeated. Take a look at who they have played/beat and see if you are impressed with the schedule. Bunker and Lincolnton did venture out and play worthy opponents and probably the reason they are 1 & 2 in the conference; however, neither team won vs a top team. Based on the seedings above (thanks Grizz) I think this year the CVAC could be eliminated by the 2nd round. I hope I am wrong, and if so, I will admit I'm wrong, but I think the CVAC, in general, is a little down this year. Speaking out of both ends, I do think Lincolnton, if they get a solid seed, can make a run in the playoffs, but meeting Salisbury in 2nd round could spell some trouble. These are only my opinions and doesn't really hold any weight.
As always, the best of luck to all of the teams, especially the CVAC, and stay healthy.
Foard and Saint we have to play, no way around it, it is what it is.
As for the conference, it's extremely competitive and there is no true gauge unless you look at non-conference, I agree. But even then that could be deceiving.
Bunker Hill and Lincolnton are your two ponies above...Bunker Hill stood no chance and we kept Willis to 11 yards on 8 carries. Lincolnton beat us by 1 point, but was down 19-0 at one point, Lincolnton turned it around but that game also could have gotten worse, keep in mind we lost Stover and were missing Adams and Williams (our strongest lineman/best nose and our downhill thumper LB that was leading team in tackles) (No excuses, the game is four quarters and Lincolnton did what they had to do to win). Very even teams, regardless of the non-conference opponents.
As for the post season, I believe the CVAC will be strong. It'll be nice to play other people other than each other. Lincolnton's speed and knack for being a second half team will push them. Teams not use to Bunker Hill will have a hard time with Willis, he's on another level, they'll have to outscore them in shootouts. Maiden has an awesome defense and stout running game complimented with a good passing game, there aren't many teams that'll have the speed that Lincolnton does or the arm talent of Swett. Bandy's passing game will catch people off guard and when they are rolling in the I formation they're hard to stop. West will cause problems, they defensively scheme very well and are sound, have a homerun hitter at RB, they are just very injured.
I believe all teams have a chance in that first round, 2 or more make it to the 3rd. From there it is grown man ball and I think Lincolnton and Maiden have the best chances. All depends on how the brackets fall! Appreciate your input, I enjoy the chance to discuss in depth.
