The actual fact is the NCHSAA wanted 1A and 4A to go to a four round 32 team playoff. The schools wanted 64 teams and five rounds. They compromised and this is what we have.
32 teams would have really been interesting! 8 4A West, 8 4A East, 8 4AA West, 8 4AA East. Talk about big time match ups in round one!!

One thing is for sure South Caldwell is not getting in under a "sensible" playoff approach. I know they are conference "champions" but that is not flying in a playoff of this caliber. Remove them and insert a worthy opponent.
Regional semi finals could be MC v Butler and WF v Harding in the west. In the east it could come down to WF v Page or CG and Hoggard v Scotland or Heritage. I would love to see those. Five small 4A in that final eight with four of those in the east.
The coaches/schools and the NCHSAA admin have got to come together to fix the playoff system. It is not good.

If I take out South Caldwell, Davie is the next team in and they would be the 16 in the West and shift every one up a spot.
Have any of you guys actually seen south Caldwell play this year? Well I did it's not good actually a dang shame that their was a decent school left out of the playoffs because of their (con. Champ) we played them and won. As a little comparison South point and Shelby beat us by a combined score of 113 to 0 !!! ZERO and we beat south Caldwell. Now I'm not trying to put down any kids or the football team but this needs fixing ITS NOT RIGHT
It is a flaw that needs to be fixed. The reason it has not been corrected is the NCHSAA has tried to appease the classifications by treating them all the same or equally. That does not work. The winner of the larger classification conference title in a split conference should be required to be the overall champion of the two classifications.
I would agree with no subdivision for everyone except 1A. I think they actually had a legit gripe, but it has exploded beyond what anyone thought at the time. What say you, btango? Do you think it was legit?
6 classifications no subdiving. Only 6 classifications for football purposes. Every other sport, 4 classifications. Different conference for football that are in split conferences and continue to split conferences for all other sports.
This or go to four equally distributed classes (25%). 48 teams qualify from each class. List from largest to smallest. Divide into six divisions with 32 teams. D1 largest 32. D6 smallest 32. Five rounds.
If they wanted to offset the number of schools per class thought they should have went 30/20/20/30 or may be something even more uneven. Do not subdivide 2A and 3A as their enrollments are not such a wide discrepancy and have less schools. Subdivide 1A and 4A fir the exact opposite reason. Problem is you would need to subdivide all team sports and that is not a good move currently which kind of nullified this.
