Huge High School Footbal Audience

I lived in Texas for a couple of years. High School football there is crazy. For most rural communities its what they live for. Ohio is the same way.

Chopper, you don’t think Shelby vs Crest looks like that.

I’m just kidding, man.;)

To be fair it might be like apples and oranges. The video is probably 5A/6A regular season game. Your small stadiums looked crowded on the news with standing room only, but the high school stadiums over there are the same size as Duke's stadium, or bigger in some cases.

I saw a version of Memorial Stadium in Houston, and the players pictures names, numbers, and positions slide across the screen on the jumbo tron, and the seating might give Clemson stadium a run for it's money.

As far as popularity, it's comparable, but Shelby/Crest 'culture' seems closer to South Carolina than North Carolina, so the popularity might be more than the avg NC high school(save for somewhere like Pisgah)

I was being sarcastic...lol

Yea I knew that. I did a search on youtube and saw the most recent video at North Stanley. Maybe 50 in the stands and the past 2 years maybe 3 ours has been just as bad at West Craven. We use to outnumber some home crowds with our fanbase. I don't understand it. Those kids represent the community. Least the community could do is support them back. Pisgah and Tuscola deserve high praise for the way they back their teams.

Biggest game is Pisgah - Tuscola in this State. Someone would have to show video otherwise to prove that to me.

Agreed! I have been to AL Brown v Concord (both stadiums multiple times over decades), Richmond v Scotland (both stadiums multiple times) Page v Grimsley (Page only), Murphy v Robbinsville (at The Big Oaks only), and none compared to Tuscola at Pisgah but I think it is best at C-P. Went to the East Burke v Freedom game in the early 1990’s. That was closer to Tuscola v Pisgah than the others I mentioned. With the new schools in Burke County that rivalry is way downtown.

Went to Allen with Dutch Fork in 2014. Impressive. Valdosta and Colquitt County in GA are excellent, also. Saw Southlake Carroll in their heyday. South Panola Miss, Hoover (Alabama) at minor league baseball stadium, All unreal atmospheres. Byrnes used to have the best entry in the game. Byrnes v Gaffney was as good as it got fir a few years especially at the old Reservation. Dillon SC is also one of the best and most unique spots to take a game in.

How bout a West Charlotte/ Independence game at Memorial Stadium in the mid to late ‘90s?

I haven't been to Pisgah yet. I have it at the top of my to do list. We have some common ground. I've been to Dillon to watch a game and I lived in Texas back in 79-80.
I use to live in a small town called Glen Rose. Just head a little North on 67 and you came to Duncanville. That is where I saw SouthLake at. That was a long time ago. I don't remember hearing of Allen back then in football but I do know where it's at. Just a tad North of Dallas. I hated Dallas. Too much traffic back then and too much traffic now. Stephenville had a good football team when I was out there. Most of those schools now have indoor practice facilities.
btango did you go to the new stadium at Allen?? It's huge but they had concrete trouble with it. I never heard what they intended to do to fix it.

Largest crowds I have been in at a high school football game were at Memorial.

The most packed I have seen the stadium was the 1980 Shrine Bowl featuring Ethan Horton for NC and William Perry for SC.

Harding v Garner in 1987 4A title game is listed as the most ever for a game in NC. 18,000 paid but does not include passes. I thought the 1996 Indy v West Charlotte game had just as large a crowd if not more. It was the regular season finale for two undefeated teams. Three Parade All Americans in the game. The street side fence was pulled over as people rushed it as the lines backed up during the first quarter. Security finally opened the gates and just let people in.

2003 Richmond v Independence but regardless of what was reported it was did not approach the crowds of the two games mentioned above. A couple of the Butler v Indy regular season finales outdrew the playoff games most years.

The largest high school sports crowd I have been in was the 1990 Indiana HS basketball title game at the Hoosier Dome with over 40,000 in attendance to see Damon Bailey.

I went to the stadium and was shown around by an athletic department official. The stadium was closed for the 2014 season while they repaired the concrete.

The Dutch Fork game was played at the stadium in Plano. Turf, great big time pressbox, seats about 15,000. Fans had the grills out in the parking lot, lined up deep paying $10 per person which is the standard ticket price there. About 10,000 in attendance that night. DF brought a few hundred at most which is why the AD told me they liked to play more local teams as they will bring a few thousand or more.

Game is at Tuscola next year. Most think the atmosphere there is not as good. If you want to go next year or the year after to Pisgah you should come with me. Was David Singleton from Pisgah with you at CH?

I'll take you up on that offer when the game is at Pisgah. Plenty of time to plan for it.
