HP Andrews McCoy steps down

Just saw this online this morning. Big thanks to Coach McKoy for his service to our community and all he did for the young men at Andrews during his time. He is a class act and a good man. I wish him well and hope to see him again on the sidelines after he takes a break to recharge his batteries.

Should be a lot of interest in this job. I trust the AD Anderson will get the right fit for the program.

Well Rodney had a nice run at Andrews and as a Carver guy I always wished him the best except when they played Carver. I don't know if this opens the door for my man Brent David but I'm sure he'd love to get that job!! Andrews is a premium job and there will not be a shortage of candidates for that position. I hope the folks in charge get it right cause I always liken the Red Raiders to us cause we face similar difficulties from the system in which we are in!! Good luck guys from Carver Nation!!!

HP Andrews is such a solid and well known program that they could literally hire whoever they want and it would not not change their success unless something drastic happens.

It will be a circus for sure with the amount of names submitted and they could literally pick a future for the program. I see them going for a more offensive minded coach who uses the teams speed and athletic gifts to an advantage. Could either be a young coach or an older one.

This is the most interesting program open right now so it should be a fun ride for sure.

UTBB, Brent David was chosen as the head coach before MCKoy but Guilford county wouldn't approve the hire due to an incident on Brent's background check. That's when McKoys got the job the day before first day of practice.

Yea I know Distance, but we hired Brent afterwards and I don't see why he could be hired in Forsyth and not Guilford!! I know Brent well and he's a great guy and football coach and his heart is in 5 Points!!! Was Mo the superintendent then? Maybe Guilford will allow his hire now!!

I agree. Brent was everybody's choice and the way gcs came in after the fact was Bs. Don't recall if Mo was superintendent at the time, but I believe he was, one of his first years I think. We'd love to have Brent leading our troops. He's big time.

Well I hope it works cause I'd hate to see a guy deterred from his DREAM job over semantics that occurred as a 16 yr old kid!!! I thought juvenile records were sealed but don't get me started!! Whatever happens, again I'm rooting for y'all cause you're cut from the same cloth as Carver!!

Agree brother. Carver and Andrews are like brothers from another mother.

I agree about the issue with Brent. It was something so petty it was laughable and frankly if he was hired at somewhere like page or grimsley they would have never said a word.

Distance, don't get me started with that!! But in the end every obstacle they put in our way makes us rise higher to achieve!!! Well whoever y'all hire, I hope they're open to rekindling the games versus us. I miss those games like I miss the WSSU/A&T games!!!

Agree. Andrews and Carver should always lockup. I'm glad to see we rekindled our rivalry with Reidsville as well this past year.

I wonder when we will start hearing names. I really agree with what slasher said, an offensive minded coach....been lacking that

looked up offensive production to see what you found lacking. here are the season averages for ppg

2015 Rodney McKoy 36.07
2014 Rodney McKoy 34.82
2013 Rodney McKoy 43.87
2012 Rodney McKoy 39.38
2011 Rodney McKoy 31.64
2010 Rodney McKoy 22.15
2009 Rodney McKoy 24.50
2008 Rodney McKoy 21.83
2007 Rodney McKoy 21.45

30.63 career ppg avg (37.1 over past 5 years since he went to the wing t). I feel like a lot of teams would take that offensive production, especially coupled with the raiders defensive emphasis.

Also, for those interested, he is 72-40 over the past 9 seasons, including the forfeits from last season over the paperwork(77-35 with out). There is only one other coach in Andrews history with more wins, and that is Herb Goins.

Guys been running the same offense forever, sure we scored alot but we played alot of bad teams. Not saying he sucked dude but you gotta be a little bit more creative with play calling.

Brent David went to Parkland to coach wrestling last year. Anybody know what he is doing now? That incident at Reynolds in 2012?

Andrews in McKoy's prime years did score a lot I'd give him that but they were lucky to have a heck of a squad to play in 2012/2013. They could have literally ran 5 basic run plays and 2 to 3 pass plays and scored a lot of points on most teams. The Wing wasn't really the best offense to show off what they had athletically.

But imagine the 2013 team in a Spread/ Spread option or west coast offense. They would have been deadly.

The first years he was at Andrews he WAS a spread guy. The spread offense got Andrews its lowest ppg. I remember reid and swinton running it with tony Washington.

What stand out receivers did Andrews have to showcase? Name one wide receiver since 2011 that has gone to college on a scholarship.

Just because you didn't go to college on scholarship doesn't mean you weren't a stud. Unfortunately Andrews has had their share of all stars on the field they weren't all stars in the classroom. I won't name names because you guys know who they are. But the tall kid they had in 2012 was a beast paired with the Justin Lea kid who was a big time player for the state title team in 2013.

The incident Brent had at RJR was an unfortunate thing. He was the ISS teacher and an angry female student came at him physically and he restrained her but she hit her head and this led to Brent being sent to the Forsyth County alternative high school where he's currently teaching. He was an excellent wrestler at Andrews and took over coaching wrestling at Parkland following a living legend in Maurice Atwood but with this being Forsyth County the program went downhill. I don't believe he's currently coaching wrestling at Parkland.

Justin lea was a good athlete, and nic quick was tall but average. I dont think that our receivers are horrible, I just think that Andrews is always blessed with much more talented and numerous running backs than receivers. I cant count the number of times I have slapped the bleachers from a dropped wide open pass over the last couple of years, part of that is just high school athletes.

I think the T was a better system because of how much RB talent andrews has had. Think about the fact that they have had multiple thousand yard rushers almost every season. I know that that is a result of play calling also, but just personal opinion. spread might be flashy and fun to watch, but also comes with the cost of quick 3 and outs and turnovers thanks to bad decisions. Wing t might not be as fun and flashy to watch, but it sure cut down on Andrews turnovers, controlled the tempo of the game, and churned out more points for the team. probably easier for our kids to understand and master. One thing you are right about, depending on who is hired and what staff is retained/replaced, system could change dramatically.

There should be a number of more than qualified candidates, even if B David is not considered. Doubt that the AD will have to go hunting for quality applicants, young, old, offense or defense.

Who was the tall kid from 2012,#5 I believe he was. Kid a big time deep threat for Raynard and caught a ton of passes that year and a ton of deep scores where he'd out jump somebody for a catch. Justin Lea, although not a college prospect was a heckuva little player for Andrews. To downplay his significance to that team in 2013 simply because he's not Cartwright or Raynard is a huge mistake.

I'm with you on our receivers in most years recently. They have sometimes looked more likely to knock a pass down than catch it. I also agree that the spread is NOT the offense to run. I think more of a pro style offense that keeps the running backs involved as we always have, while giving you flexibility to spread some of your running back talent in the slot for run or pass and ability to develop a tight end threat which can be lethal in high school as many d ends and linebackers have no clue how to defend interior pass. Wing T is awful When you need to pass. Limited ability to spread the defense in passing downs and if you are a wing t team and lineup in anything other than the wing t then they automatically know you are passing.

I hope and trust AD Anderson will make a big time hire.

You will be suprise who the next coach will be.
On receivers Amr Campbell (6'1" 200lbs reminds me of Tony Wasinton) on this year team was one of the great recivers Andrews has ever had, but could not display it because they did not throw to him maybe but once a game, but that once, he made the best of it. Most time
it was a TD. Maybe he will show this at East Carolina next year

Had a great game against Clinton, great player. Is the new coach going to at least be a good surprise?

I played when Marcus Gilchrist and Brand played. Who was Andrewa coach then? That offense was special

The Amir Campbell kid was a great player for us this year. But he wasn't 200 lbs. our roster might have said 200 lbs but all recruiting services and combine who actually take his weight have him around 6'1, 175 and runs a 4.8. Great hands but that speed won't allow him to play WR at the next level. He needs to put on some weight and play tight end. He'd be a helluva matchup for somebody in the middle third of the field. Glad we had him for a year.

I would like to see Brent get job.....But wonder would DA step down from the AD role and become coach again?

'Don't think so, that would be a demotion of about $35000.00, and in Guilford County you can't be a coach and a AD at the same time.

Why? Scoring points is the name of the game on offense, and whatever boring or predictable offense he was running achieved the goal.

the Andrews version of the wing T was extremely tough to defend with the number of backs they would throw at you. I think due to our QB over the last few years, our ability to throw the ball was far less than what we were used to with some of the great QB's we have had over the years. With a good QB, you can still throw in enough wrinkles in the wing T to be a good passing team. We did a great job of that in most years running the wing T. I think some of us, including myself, have been more down on our scheme specific to throwing the football, but admittedly, I know that it had more to do with personnel under center and less to do with scheme.

Had this same conversation with the Richmond faithful the past couple of years... it doesn't matter what offense or defense you run, it matters what your coach's ability to teach it is. If you have the athletes, you'll roll the other team no matter what style you run. And Andrews always has the athletes to roll in 2A ball lol.
