Both teams riding high at 2-0

Actually it’s not an official ACC game...

I remember years back some schools getting blacklisted from high schools for scheduling Friday night games. ECU maybe?

I'm a huge Carolina fan. I started pulling for Carolina as a kid when Mack was here the first time. It didn't hurt that some family friends took me the 5 hours to a game when I was a kid. I'm stoked for where Carolina seems to be headed right now. So it is hard to miss a game like that. However, my every intention is to attend Franklin-Swain, and if the score seems close I might check in on my phone since I stream TV on the internet.

I do wish they'd reserve Friday for HS. I know there have been times where college teams scheduled on Friday night, asked local teams to reschedule to Saturday, and gave tickets to their players if they wanted to come. I guess there aren't enough tickets available for that though.

Wolfpack also fill the front third of their schedule with teams that don’t have a pulse. Look at their non conference strength of
Schedule every year. Shameful.

Back in the day, the ACC vowed to not compete with H.S. Football. Of course, money talks.

Wake loses a home game in which recruits can come visit.

I do wonder though... The hard core college football season ticket holders that I know aren’t typically at a high school game on Friday night.
And those hard core high school fans who have friends and family on the high school field.. . Well, they aren’t going to miss their game for a non-conference game that doesn’t really mean anything.

Plus, don’t forget, Wake Forest has about 1000 fans. The rest are just folks from the neighborhood who just bought a ticket via GroupOn.

Total BS. Many high school programs are fighting fir every penny to sustain. The crowds have dropped, the participation has dropped. Do colleges not realize that this may be a money maker today but could seriously hurt the game long term.

The college coaches do not like it but they like the big paychecks and games like this are money makers for the networks. There are some real big name schools playing Friday night this year, Penn State, Michigan State, et al. Crazy!

I agree for the fans that attend the games it is a bummer, because if your a high school football fan, you prolly cheer for a college team also.

Here is where I differ however, a UNC vs Wake Forest game is not a must see game on a typical Saturday to be honest (t.v wise). When you place a game like this on a Friday with limited competition it attracts a college football fan that would not typically watch either of these two schools if they had another game to watch.

HBCU IMHO do really well with getting t.v exposure by playing Thursday and Friday games. Again I do get most people point that this is direct competition with high school football and really don't disagree.

I actually think Some of the big high school rivalry games should consider playing on Saturday's to be honest. I would consider going to a S pointe vs Shelby game on a Saturday or Havelock vs New Bern game. Or many of the other big time matchups, but with so many local games on same night it is pointless not to go to a game close by. Just a thought.

One of those 1,000 or so Wake fans here: we'll be fine Friday night; not too concerned about what it does to h.s. football attendance, but OTOH may be a good time to short WalMart stock b/c sales are gonna' take a hit Friday night.

Biggest rivalry in the state, Shelby vs Crest, is this Friday. There are a lot of Carolina and Wake Forest fans in Cleveland County. Burns is off, Kings Mountain plays at West Meck. Typically this would be a ginormous crowd, even with Crest losing to Burns last Friday. It will be interesting to see how the crowd is this Friday and if this ACC game does have an impact on the gate.

Huge Carolina fan, but I’ll be in Oxford watching the horses play. Go horses, Go Heels!

I really agree with this. That's really the only thing that high school football doesn't have an advantage over other levels of the sport is the ability to watch more than one game a week. Of course, if high school football tries to compete with college or pro for time slots it's going to lose except in those rare cases you already brought up.

Hey just DVT the Wake/UNC game, don’t look at your iPhone nor any scoreboard and when you get home watch it. It not being actually live makes no difference if you don’t know the outcome. Then you can fast forward between plays , dead balls etc.

I will not attend a NC State game on a friday night even if West Craven has a bye week. I'll find another high school game to attend.

Perfect idea.

I dont watch that crap or the NFL. Football is played on Thursday and Friday and today is Wednesday. Go Knights

I feel sorry for you. You’re missing some amazing games

Both college and the NFL are "big business", but at least the NFL is functioning at a high professional level vs. the amateur hour that college often functions at: Friday night games, high noon in August games for a P5 vs. an FCS, interminable games that now drag on to 4 hours. The NFL is built for t.v.: no clock stoppage after first downs, shorter play clocks, 12 vs. a 20 minute halftime = a game closer to 3 hours. I can look at my guide on a Sunday and almost guess which game will be mid-4th quarter by the start time, and catch several in "crunch time" accordingly. I really enjoy attending college football games (more for the tailgate than the guy in the red shirt who keeps dragging out the actual game), but it's a flawed model that no other nation in the world attaches to their university system. My prediction: eventually the players will be paid either directly or for the use of their images, and you'll end up with a handful of high profile programs where the top players can sell their autographs for hundreds of dollars, and the only "fans" will be the ones who didn't give a tinker's damn about the school's
academic mission to begin with. This can't and won't be sustained for the long haul, so enjoy it while we can.

I hope you are not right, but I am afraid you are. I think this is the Golden Age of College Football. At some point the powers that be will give up what will be seen (is seen currently? depends on who you are) as an antiquated notion of amateurism and follow the cash.

The only way I see college football to survive over the long haul in a manner similar to how it is now is if each scholarship player gets a stipend with a no-outside-work clause from the university they play for. It would be similar to work study except they can add the no-outside-work clause, which my limited understanding of labor laws is completely legal. Then you have a whole host of other issues, such as minimum wage, overtime, health insurance and the like. This would lead to an even further separation of the haves and have nots in college football, but might shatter the already transparent illusion that the UABs and the Alabamas are competing at the same level.

It’s not an ACC game and the ACC had nothing to do with arranging the game, so that probably explains why a vow the ACC made about when they schedule games isn’t really an issue. UNC & Wake scheduled this game as an out of conference game just as if they had scheduled any other school not in the ACC.

But if I remember correctly, this game had to be approved by the ACC before they could schedule it. I don’t know that for a fact, but I really think I heard that recently when they were discussing the game... along with the “first football game ever played in the state of NC... 10/18/1888”.

I was listening to the pregame of the WFU vs Rice game on the radio.

I’ve never heard that, but I remember it being scheduled. I wouldn’t be able say what you may have possibly heard on a radio broadcast, but if you think it might perhaps be a fact without being sure based on what you may have heard while discussing a game from 1888.... wait, where am I going with this?

Anywho, it’s non conference. I’ll see if I can find out for sure before commenting one way or the other on ACC permission.

Shelby-Crest game mentioned on this thread, big game, big gate, but weather forecast not so good. Thunderstorms with big rain chance may move this one to Saturday or Monday.

Forecast actually looks better than it did earlier in the week. Only 25% chance now....was over 50 earlier in the week. Hopefully it keeps going down as the day goes on.

For those who will watch this game on DirectTV ESPN you should be thankful it is not a late game.

ESPN and DirectTV are parting company at midnight tonight. Contract dispute.

Hopefully will be resolved soon.

I'm a Carolina fan, but I'm recording the game so I can watch some good 'ol high school football tonight!

I am at Gaffney fir the Mallard Creek game. Great facility!!! I have at least six friends and their spouses plus a few with at least two children that would be at a high school game tonight that are Wake Forest.

The conference tv contracts require X amount of games to include a set number on Thursday and Friday. It is my understanding that each school gets in a rotation fir a Friday game. The conference, not the individual schools, are the point for all television negotiations.
