Hickory vs Statesville 2nd rd

A rivalry that goes back to olden days before WWII. Statesville always plays though in this matchup. Expect no different but do expect a Hickory win but Statesville will make them earn it

My eyes aren't the best but it looks like Statesville has 31 wins to Hickory's 27 wins. WOW, that' what I call a rivalry.

*Saw the 1966 game played at Lenoir Rhyne College/Now Lenoir Rhyne University, in Hickory. This game was for the Western North Carolina High School Activities Association, championship, which was won by the Red Tornadoes.

*Side Note: In that 1966 game, The Greyhounds deep man was a guy named Eddie Gamble (Not certain, going off memory only). He would take the kickoff and charge forward at full speed, crashing into the Hickory defenders. He got through one time, and returned the ball for the Hounds only touchdown. Remember thinking, "He has an overload of guts, and I don't know how he kept from getting hurt."

One other thing, Recall seeing Statesville's band for the first time at this particular game. They were dressed in the image of Scottish Highlanders and even had bagpipes. Other than television, it was the first time I had seen or heard them. I assumed they were only replicas, but when they passed by I could hear the whine like bagpipes make.

The rivalry did begin in 1924 and currently Statesville is leading 31-29-1 currently.

Lincolnton you have a good memory of the 1966 WNCHSAA Championship game played on College Field on the campus of Lenoir Rhyne University. Eddie Gamble, who passed a couple of years ago and later played at LR, did run a kickoff back for a touchdown to get Statesville on the board that night and make the score 34-7. HHS would score once more and win the game 41-7.

This week's game should be a good one.

Hickory too talented for them but looking at the size of the Statesville players you’d think otherwise.

Al Capone was just getting into his crime spree when these teams started meeting, ha. Hey I was wrong bout the WWI thing but Al Capone that ones bout right. Comedy and history is what you get from me on some comments lol

After the big win, kids had to get undercover to smuggle the hooch to the after party lol

Can’t see Statesville winning not enough offense, but Statesville teams for years has always tended to play to there competition level. Hence the statement I made on another thread that they can beat anyone and lose to anyone. You just don’t know what you gonna get with them.

Depends on who answers your questions. I'll go first. Statesville did not want to be in Hickory tonight and got their tails handed to them, AGAIN!
Obviously lol. I give the team credit for laying down the whoopin they’ve given every team this year. I hadn’t looked at the chart yet, who is next up?

Crest nevermind. Decided I wouldn’t be lazy and just look. Gonna get rough for the ole hometown from here on. Crest ain’t no joke and neither is Dudley. West Charlotte showing up and playin some ball now too.

Oh super nasty. Those teams are better than they were last year. Hickory will be on their toes and really have to prep now. Erwin too
We will play whomever is next. Just like last year, it's not what the competition does, but what you fail to do. Hickory's execution was spot on tonight and took whatever Statesville gave us. Run or pass, it was clicking.

They’ll be ready. We’d never doubt you or them on that. Crest and Hickory have met some in the past maybe not a lot. Think same conf at one time. Not sure what the series is between the two but I’d bet Crest has it by a few. When Crest was part of the NW4A they were only beat twice by a conf opponent and both times it was Freedom. Could be wrong or alittle off on that but I do know Freedom took em in 98 and 99
