I posted this prob 4 years ago or so but I threw in East Burke 07’ in the mix. That was about a one man team so I left them out ha ha.

Both these teams were ruthless show stoppers on every down. On offense I believe Hickory done about everything and Hibriten was known for shutdown D and run run run. Hickory wasn’t scored on much and had no close games in the playoffs except maybe Bervard if I remember correctly.

So just for fun who would win between these 2 and why? Prob won’t get much from this but like I said it’s just for fun as we prep for rest of season. If you guys know a foothills area team at some point besides Crest 94’ n 96’ that could hang throw that in to.

Well if Crest is foothills then go ahead and pick any Shelby team you want (that won a state championship). Crest 2014 will probably go down as the best team of the Crest generations though. At least statistically speaking.

That Hickory team was good. Thankfully CC is not in the foothills so this is one thread Crest91 can stay out of.

Crest91, I do remember a team from the foothills laying it on the Chargers back in your day! Remember??

BFR, your East Burke boys looked good last night! I hope it continues

I hope so too. I didn’t see any games last night. They didn’t play anybody if you know what I mean lol. Prob the worst WC team ever. They wasn’t battle tested yet. Hopefully they’ll make some noise and finish at least behind Hibriten but with Foard playing ok I just won’t count on it.

Hickory dominated the presubdivided era 3A as much as any team has dominate a season before. Impressive!

That 96 Hickory team was impressive had a big running back if I remember correctly Brevard hung with them just couldn’t stop there running game. Closet game they had in playoffs.

Oh yeah. With exception of the Bervard game Hickory destroyed EVERYONE by 35 to 50 pt margins. Even the final game in Chapel Hill was a blowout. It’s like a group of guys coming together at a whole new level. Hickory 94’ was not so great. Many of the players were sophomores who pretty much trained, grew, learned, and more less came together with great chemistry 2 years later as seniors and just ran the tables.

Who coulda beat Hickory that year- possibly Crest, maybe West Charlotte, maybe a Winston or Greensboro team all of which woulda been 4A. Only one I’d beat woulda done it was Crest in a nail bitter by 7 or less.

I personally think that group of guys could take last years Hibriten by 10 to 14 pts. They were just that good. What’s funny is I don’t think any of them made the draft 4 to 5 years later. If they did someone tell us.

If you wanna throw Shelby in the mix that’s a tough call even with all those rings. Crest 96’ played 4A all the way when there were only 4 classifications then. Hickory did it with 3A which can be just as tough some years as the 4A. I’m really just comparing the 2 schools here that are only 35 min driving distance apart in the foothills area. But making mention of the Cleveland boys never hurts.

Shelbys 95 team beat that Hickory team in 3 Ots.
That was one of my best game I've ever seen Shelby play, and I've watched since 79.

I also remember next yr Hickory went undefeated and so did Crest.
Many people wanted them to pair up and play after championship games
Believe Hickory was up 35 to zip at half in the 96 championship game. May have been best team in state regardless of classification. For some reason I recall a Patterson stud on that team.

THat Hickory team (96) was the best high school football team I ever personally saw. Nothing fancy just power running, sweeps around either end, and when teams put more in the box to stop the run they just went over the top for long passes down the sidelines. Defensively they were just as skilled. I believe one of the Hickory coaches of that day told me they only trailed once in the entire season. At Brevard when the opening kickoff was ran back in the playoffs. Someone more familiar with their entire season correct me if I am wrong on that. Can I think of a team since that I can imagine beating them? Not really with the possible exception of the South Point team that physically beat down Asheville on the road in a snowstorm a few years back when I thought the Cougars were very good.

They were huge favorites in the championship game. Ragsdale squeaked by three of their playoff opponents making it to the title game with four losses. Do not think a single Hickory opponent had less than three regular season losses. That is what gives me pause to say Hickory was the overall best team in the state although they may have been but Crest was impressive. Toughest opponent for Hickory was Freedom. Crest beat the Patriots by a TD or so more than Hickory did but football math is not the most reliable. In a head to head matchup Hickory would have had some issues with Crest up front on both sides of the ball. Hate we didn’t see it but at least they did not have subdivided playoffs!!!!

I agree Football math isn’t realiable. Freedom/EB matchup of 98’ was prime example that I’ve used several times. Freedom destroyed all the teams that beat down EB in the games before that fat Friday and put 5 or 6 scores on a Watauga team that EB barely won against and on paper Freedom was the absolute favorites and favored to get ugly. Freedom won, but barley.

I would have to go with Hickory 96’ over last years Hibriten cause the boys were very diverse on offense and shutdown on defense. Not saying Hibriten is different in that aspect but these guys were tough at every angle. The Crest team of the same year had bigger linemen(prob some out of district but won’t start that argument lol) and could and did push guys like you wouldn’t believe and creating nasty running lanes with backs that made things happen quick fast n in a hurry. I couldn’t imagine Travis Padgett being 8 or 9 years older and playing on that same Crest team. The offense damage would be horrific.

Matched up with Hickory...standing room only with Crest having a slight edge with the linemen...but really coulda went either way.

Actually 21-0 at half and Jamel Patterson went on to Ohio University and had a solid college career.

The '96 HHS team was one for the generations for sure. They were very talented, huge and had the discipline to play with anyone. In 1996 they led the entire state in scoring offense and scoring defense, when the starters rarely played after the 2nd series of the 2nd half.

I won't compare them to any other teams, as their fanbase have every right to tout their teams, but I've seen some great teams play and the '96 Red Tornadoes were a special team. The team played their opening playoff game at home then won the next four playoff games on the road due to the unusual playoff format of the time.

Like many other schools our turnout is low. Coach Stone brings so much intensity and experience to the table that I feel he can help will us to at least another .500 season this year. It's tough.
