Hey NCHSAA....

Why not invite Simmons to your realignment meetings and just let him do it? His second draft looks far more practical (especially in 2-A and 1-A) than anything you guys have come up with in your first two drafts

There is no substitute for intelligence and common sense.

HP Andrews definitely needs the conference proposed by Simmons rather than the existing draft.

Also I suppose the Shelby guys would prefer Simmons draft?

Simmons projected draft looks ok to me for West Craven. All of the teams have JV programs so that is good. Ayden Grifton while I don't think they have ever beaten us have given us some good games the past few years. You have to be ready to play to beat them. Washington will always be a good game for us.

And Burns...also you can add Patton...there is no sense splitting up them and East Burke. There is no sense playing 1A schools in football.

In Simmons' last realignment scenario, shouldn't Union Academy be playing football his members of his West Conference 6 (Bessemer City, Cherryville, and others ...)?

My friend, I'm a big fan of Simmons, but some of the distances for Shelby might be impractical assuming distance is a major factor. Shelby, located in south central Cleveland County, would be a pretty big haul to Bunker Hill, which is in the northern tip of Catawba County. Bunker Hill High School is as close, if not closer, to West Forsyth High School (near the Triad area) as it is to Shelby.
Bandys, is located on the far eastern side of Catawba, and not too far across the lake from Iredell County.

Shelby and Burns would have to go by Lincolnton and West Lincoln to get to three and maybe four of these locations that Simmons has listed.
Burns, in the middle of Cleveland County, is as close to two of these locations (West Caldwell and East Burke) as is Lincolnton, but the Catawba County schools would be only half the distance or less, for us, e.g. Maiden is eight miles, Newton-Conover, and Bandys about fifteen miles.

I wish we were in a conference with Burns and Shelby. It goes back to the days of the old Southwestern conference when we were in the WNCHSAA with them. It would be very tough but a lot of people around here, particularly the old heads, felt like playing those schools made us a better program. It's not meant to take away from Catawba County football, either. They too, have sent us home disappointed quite a few times.

I agree. Ideally you’d have Burns, Shelby, Huss, East Gaston, Lincolnton, and West Lincoln. Throw in Lincoln Charter for the other sports so we don’t have to play one another three times in baseball. I don’t know why the NCHSAA is so allergic to putting Cleveland County, Lincoln County and Gaston County Schools together. This is the perfect opportunity with East Lincoln and North Lincoln going to 3A. But noooo...they put 1A schools with us who are going to get creamed in football.

Maybe it's time to bust up the NCHSAA

No doubt the NCHSAA is an incompetent bunch. Tried a similar joke of a conference back in the 90's.

I've always thought Simmons had the most unbiased, educated rankings and opinions. I think he was for 5a at one time. Don't understand why nchsaa goes against what people overwhelmingly want to see happen, everytime.

The schools have to vote on a change from 4a to 5a. The 2a/3a/4a schools overwhelmingly didnt vote. Those schools are why we still dont have 5a or 6a.

I personally think they are trying too hard to match up conferences based on factors outside of geography and enrollment. First draft had a large number of splits to reduce travel. This created in some eyes, an unlevel playing field. So, this time it looks like they swayed more toward competitive balance and were not concerned about distance.

When you use socio-economic factors and successes in the country club sports to try and place schools in a certain conference, it creates more problems.

Not going to please everyone, but getting the 2-A conferences, especially in the eastern, southeastern part of the state should not be this difficult. I mean you have six team leagues and then schools 20-25 miles away are in 10 team leagues with a couple of two hour bus rides one way. Where is the logic in that?

Its really not that complicated, even when looking at it outside of a football perspective.
