I'm guessing that few school built/named today are choosing other people groups/ cultures/ races as their "mascots".
And not because of political correctness as much as common decency. I'm turned off by northerners, cultured folks and actors trying to use the term Y'all . I get pissed when they assume I'm ignorant based on my geography, folkways or my love of livermush. I'll fight a man for disrespecting my community, or my high school.
I consider myself, my fam, my community, etc... nobody's "mascot". I come from a family who sports "lint heads", "cotton pickers", "mill hillers", and alot of other names others used to demean our lot. While we can use them, we dont authorize outsiders to do do.
Subsequently , Ithink maybe some Native Americans may not appreciate the fun I've had in years past joining my SP friends in chopping and chanting a gringo war chant.
I guess according to todays revised rules of extremes, that makes me some kind of "liberal'. South Point has a wonderful history, but in my opinion as an outsider, its not because of their mascots name. If changed to the Red Hens, Lineberger Stadium will still be a place to dread and enjoy.
And, Im guessing that the term Red Raider is cool, so long as its not attached to the image of Native Americans?
