Been reading it all over social media. He was the HC at Tarboro from 1976 to 1991. He Coached Kelvin Bryant back in the late 70s. He won the State Title in 3A 1984 at Tarboro. They set a State record defeating the number 1 Kannapolis 20-0 at Kannapolis. They held the high power Kannapolis offense to no first downs and a total of 30 yards.

Jim Brett coached at West Brunswick for 2 years and won back to back State Titles 1992 14-6 win over Maiden. And the next year 1993 West Brunswick moved up to 3A and won the Title 19-14 over High Point Andrews.

Tarboro legend. A little before my time but many Tarboro faithful say that Tarboro team he beat in the eastern finals while he was at west brunswick was one of the best Tarboro teams ever. Prayers for his family !

Jimmy as he was know growing up in Ahoskie played on the Ahoskie High School Eastern State championship team in 1962. He was coached by legendary coach Jack Young who ran the basic same offense that Taroboro runs now. That's where Jim learned how to run it. He was also a very good baseball player. The Yankees were interested in him. Prayers for his family.

Tarboro has actually been running the Tarboro T since 1952 when Doug Alexander brought the offense to Tarboro. Alexander hired Brett and when Alexander retired, Brett became the head coach

A fine coach and person. In 1983, or maybe 1984... they beat a pretty good John Graham?Warren County in the third round of the playoffs. It was impressive how tough they were on both sides of the ball. Football changed to an air-raid philosophy over the last few decades...but, Tarboro has continued to win with an old school offense with today's kids. Praying for the family during this difficult time.

I was just seeing this and wanted to share this story. Perhaps the best example of the influence of Jim Brett was the 1993 3A Eastern final between Tarboro and West Brunswick. Brett had left Tarboro two seasons earlier and was in his second year coaching the Trojans. Russell Weinstein had the unenviable task of following in Brett’s shoes and in many ways, he just adopted what Brett left behind and didn’t change much. Watching a Brett coached team face a Brett built program was just spooky. Both teams looked like mirror images of the other. The master overcame the student and West Brunswick won a close hard fought contest in Shalotte to advance to the state championship where they defeated Andrews for the 3A title, their second straight 3A state title. The Trojans moved up from 2A to 3A after the 1991 season, which makes Brett’s impact even more noteworthy.
