Never see much conversation about the Cumberland county schools on this board much. It seemed like the state championship went through Cumberland county in the 70's, 80's & 90's ... With the occasional championship this century. A lot of schools in that area, but very little conversation.

Other than Britt, 71st, TS, GC, Cumberland Co football aint what it used to be. CF appears to be coming on but after these 5 there isnt much to talk about.

Jack, you are right. It's not like the old days with Byrd, South View, Terry Sanford and 71st battling it out not only for the best in Fayetteville, but in the state. 71st seems to be putting a little streak together with McLaurin and should be able to compete with the athletes they have. The rest aren't making much noise in the state.

71st use to always be the big talk, the big boys, the program up to the 2000's until Coach Paroli left
COACH BOB PAROLI is a legend in the hallways of 71st High School. He stained the footprint of that football field with nothing but pride. A coach never forgotten.

Then Richmond as one of the surrounding(not fayetteville) programs started getting attention.
Now days, Scotland holds the tortch.....There is nothing around in Fayetteville as the Big Talk except Jack Britt......They have their NFL experienced Coach

That's the truth! Coach Paroli was the best. Fayetteville was the hotbed in NC for years when Paroli was at Byrd. And when Bobby Poss was doing his thing at 71st then at South view. We had the "pleasure" of scrimmaging at 71st my junior year in HS. Our HC was a former assistant for Poss and set it up. That was a great experience to play down there and feel the tradition. Went back to watch a playoff game that November and the atmosphere was electric. I also was fortunate to coach with one of his sons Tony for 4 years at Robinson HS in Concord. Same type mentality of smash mouth football and a truly caring coach of his players.

Paroli is a legend and you knew you were in for a fight every time you played against his teams. 25 years at Byrd and going to five state championships (never winning). Eight years at 71st and finally winning his only championship in 2008. Great coach and a great person. Poss was another great coach winning two championships with two different schools (71st & South View).
