Burke County hoops

Freedom won a pair again tonight; the girls won 70-28 against East Rutherford and the boys got a 70-61 victory over TC Roberson. In the girl's game Freedom got good balance and eight of the nine players who dressed scored. In the boy's game the Rams stuck around most of the game, but Freedom was clearly in control. Amore Connelly had 18 points and a trio of dunks while Kobe Johnson had 16. The Patriots take on Asheville Christian in the boy's championship game tomorrow, while the girls play North Wilkes.

Asheville Christian is very good. It will be interesting to see if Freedom can stay close.

They’ve got size and they shoot the ball well, but they only had nine dressed for tonight’s game. We might be able to push the tempo and run them down with our depth.

Looks like ACA had a big 2nd half and pulled away. North Wilkes must have a pretty good girls team.

We had a great first half and I thought we might stay with them, but they held our boys to four points in the third quarter and dominated the boards. They had a junior named Bailey who shot the lights out (he’s got offers from UNCA and Stetson).
A couple of our kids who usually come up big were shut down, but we missed a few opportunities that could have cut into the final margin. Their 6’8 kid really didn’t do much, but they had enough other weapons that they didn’t really need him.

I might put them above them honestly. They beat Freedom by more than EB.
They were ranked ahead of the Lady Cavs for most of last year but they got knocked out before the regional finals. They’re big, but don’t have a player the caliber of Stillwell.

Last year the older Bare sister was out with an ACL tear.
Should be an interesting match up if they meet in the playoffs.

Freedom picked up a pair of nice wins in Lenoir over Hibriten tonight. The boy's game was never in any doubt ant the Patriots picked up an 89-50 win over the Panthers with Amore Connelly tossing down three dunks and 20 points while Braxton King knocked down seven treys for his 21.
But the girl's game was a real thriller. Freedom made a nice fourth quarter comeback and almost won in regulation before they picked up a 47-45 overtime win. Only six girls played for Freedom, but all made a solid contribution. Peyton Caldwell led the Lady Patriots with 15, but the Bates girl came off the bench and had five fourth quarter points to spark the comeback. A win to start conference play is a great help to a struggling Lady Pats team.
Freedom will play host to South Caldwell Tuesday night and then play Ashe in Morganton on Friday, so both teams need to keep up the momentum at home.

The Patriots and Lady Patriots continued their hot play in early conference action. The Lady Spartans led the Lady Patriots for most of the girl's game, but Freedom put up a nice comeback, hit some clutch threes and pulled out a 55-49 win. Peyton Caldwell had 24 for Freedom, while Kaitlyn Hagmann put in 13, Haven Gladden added 10 and Ava Cooke had 8. The Anderson girl really lit it up for SC. She's only a freshman and she's going to be special if she keeps this level of play up.
Freedom won the boy's game 94-92. The Pats led by anywhere from 15 points to the final margin for the entire game after the first quarter and the Spartans hit two long threes in the last 30 seconds to make it close. Amore Connelly had 21 and a dunk for Freedom before fouling out on a technical midway through the final period. King Johnson put in 20, Kobe Johnson had 16 including several big foul shots down the stretch and Braxton King and Amare Williams each had 15 by hitting five treys apiece.
Freedom hosts Ashe County on Friday and the girl's game should be a good one.
