While anything is possible, I only see 4 possible upsets (based on seedings):

Starmount over South Stanley, if anyone would call this an upset.
Mitchell over Corvian, maybe not probable but possible plus a little.
Robbinsville over Bessemer, I would give it even odds.
East Wilkes over North Rowan, again I would give even odds.

Agree with this except the Corvian game may not be close. Will know more about them after this game

Think the Mitchell game will be a lot like the Heritage game.
Best of luck to Mitchell and the Western Mountain teams that survived Hurricane Hellene !
Only until and if you play the BEARS. Hoping 🐻🏈does a 3 peat. 😉😉
Hoping that losing by 4 points to Avery woke them up. Mitchell has MA by a few playoff games and we need to catch up. lol...

I am hoping to see East Wilkes, Mount Airy, and Starmount move to the 3rd round and East Wilkes play a close game in the third round against Mount Heritage. Only Mount Airy or Starmount can move on from the 3rd round when the games start to get tougher to win. My point is the NWC is not a weak conference as some have said. If it was weak then Mount Airy would not have won the 1A State Championship in 2022 & 2023.

No. 16 Mountain Island Charter at No. 1 Mount Airy (MA) MA wins with a running clock and is still the team to beat in the 1A West until they are upset.

No. 9 Starmount at No. 8 South Stanly (Starmount) SS has some really tall athletes at receiver and a fast little RB and they can score quickly. SM is a real good team with enough athletes to handle the SS WR/QB/RB speed and athleticism and takes the win handily.

No. 12 Mitchell at No. 5 Corvian Community (Mitchell) CC is up and coming, athletic team not to be taken lightly. Mitchell is mountain football and can mash the flatlanders up front. Mitchells playoff tradition and style of play is something CC has not seen much of if any all season.

No. 13 Cherokee at No. 4 Eastern Randolph (ER) ER is really good again and is rolling along for a showdown with the MA/Starmount winner for a shot at a state title. The Braves are a solid team but will have a long trip back to the mountains after this one. It may be close early on, ER will pull away in the second half of this one to make the third round.

No. 19 Christ the King at No. 3 Murphy (Murphy) CTK finds out what mountain football is about and gets pushed around by Murphy. Murphy wins big!

No. 11 Robbinsville at No. 6 Bessemer City (Rville) Do not know much about BC, other than they are traditionally not very good. They do play some really good 2A teams in conference so they could be a surprise team as records can be deceptive. Rville won a sloppy game over Tville last week and also plays in a tough league. Rville advances behind that big OL and fullback.

No. 10 East Wilkes at No. 7 North Rowan (EW) This is the best matchup in round 2. EW is good at what they do when they are clicking on offense. NR has more losses but can put lots of points on the scoreboard and quickly. NR losses include two very good 2A playoff teams Salisbury and Forest Hills.

No. 18 Hayesville at No. 2 Mountain Heritage (MH) MH takes out Hayesville in this one pretty handily. MH is a real good team and will be one of the final four pending an upset.

Will the 1a final and 3a final be played on same day at nc state?
Yes and at different times. Seems last year 1A played around 12:00 or 1 pm and 3A played followed maybe an hour or 2 later. Someone else may know the times. I am not sure why they are not showing the times unless they are TBD since they are being played several weeks later.

Dates and times will be determined after the regional rounds.

  • State Championships: December 20, 2024
  • State Championships: December 21, 2024

Very well done. Some thought put into all the games.
