For Providence Grove..........I'm torn between 2009 and 2021. I'm going to go '21 simply for the fact that they put up a better fight in the playoffs. However, the 09 team beat ER in the very first matchup between the schools.

I'll also add that PG has been around since 2008.

That '98 loss, I was with Coach Brown on the call and thought Piggy would get that first down. The Rams just rose to the occasion and took the momentum from there until the end of the game.

You could write a book based on the playoff games between Starmount and Maiden. Every one of ‘em were great games….absolute wars!

I remember a game that was over at their place when 3 TD’s happened in the last minute of play. Starmount scored with under a minute to go to take the lead and most thought the game was over. Maiden started at the 20 and ran a jet sweep and our RB broke free and took it 80 yards to the house. We thought we had it… but noooo!

Starmount took the ensuing kick off and ran it all the way to our 10…had time for one more play….a completed pass for the winning score! Ugh!….it was an EPIC ball game…but we lost. I believe it was 1990…same year that Maiden beat Monroe with Huntley.

There’s a ton of history between Starmount and Maiden…ya know…the coaching staffs were very close as well…Brown and Hutchens were friends.

I struggled with the topic…because it’s very difficult for me to pick a favorite Maiden team. I’ve enjoyed them all.

There would be three of them.

1972 13-0 State Champions. Voted by NC AP as the # 1 team statewide, regardless of association or classification.
The team I played on.

1998 State Champions. The team my older son played on.

2004 State Runner Up. The team my younger son played on.

Nothing like watching your sons experience the same thing that you did.

Not that it matters….but the “Bad News Bears” from Mt Airy …have to be right there with Shelby on playoff appearances since ‘68….hard to believe.

A favorite year for me was Shelby's 2006 season.They went undefeated at 16 and 0 and that included the incredible Western Championship game against the than undefeated Pisgah team.
