Best year your team have

Our 02’ team was very good 15-0, made it to the state championship, vs Cummings…..then “The call/The play” happened.

The 06’ Clinton team lost to Cummings in the title game too. Dwight Jones was on that Cummings team, we shut him down but that was because they ran all over us!! RB had like 240 in that game. We were so worried about the pass, we forgot about the run.

15 Dog’s. Senior RB’s Johnnie Glaspie, Keyshawn Canady. Jr QB was Aliza. Sophomore’s Desmond Newkirk and Javonte Williams. Won Eastern Championship at the dog pound against James Kenan in one of the best games I’ve seen. JK had beaten the dogs few weeks earlier in conference game. Then won States against Mitchell. Beat Clinton, ED, Laney that year

Ok Maiden guys. What are your thoughts about the Blue Devils. I seen them quite a few times. Last year’s team seem impressive. I know they won i believe a Championship game back in 1978 and in ‘92 they made it to the 2A State Championship game but lost to West Brunswick in a close battle. I hope I got the info right.

Sounds right...I would add the Championship in '71 or '72...not quite sure...I wasn't born yet.

Other than that I would say my Junior year was a very special team...14-1 lost at home in the western finals vs Thomasville. Our defense was very dominant.

The team we fielded last year was a very special one and I look for this year to be even better.

Record wise North Surry's had 3- 10 win years: 1972, 1998, 2017. Any of those 3 would count among most people but I always tend to say this year was the best:

The 1966 squad we had is very, very underrated. That team had a lot of interesting things: we won the 2A basketball title that year (Bill Atkins's last year as HC, he was a Football assistant then and quite a few bball guys played,) this was the first senior class we had that was integrated (we broke that down in 1964, our head coach then went to black neighborhoods to recruit kids which was unheard of then, there's a section in a book I read once talking about it. It was one of the coolest things I 've ever read.) And it was our last year in District 7 2A North. We had a lot of good things going for us and we responded with 6 shutouts, including the first win we ever had over East Surry. Then we let it all slide when we let West Wilkes upset us and cost us a playoff spot  Still haven't found an article discussing what happened there. If we had made it I think we could have been at least a runner up for a District 2A title that year. East made it to one and we beat them I know we could have too. The juniors came back to help us get to the 3A Western Title game the next year vs a very stout Elkin team but I still always say we woulda been champs that year if we had one break in that WW game.

Of the 10 win teams I say either 72 or 2017 was the best. Not hating on that 1998 squad they were really good but we were really hurt that year by a down schedule of teams (to their credit they gutted an OT win over Starmount that year.) Put that team in a spread or modernized offense now and they would be just as dominant; they had two 70 point games that year. 1972 we went undefeated in the regular season, we beat a very good MA team to win the conference. We got a dud draw and drew Tuscola in the 1st round. We woulda been a 2nd or 3rd round team that year. 2017 was a very fun year. Besides the MA game we refused to lose that year and we just loved to play; it was a addictive year that passed by too fast. If we had went 2A that year instead of 2018, I see us making a run. We went 2AA and got a crap draw which is typical we have the worst luck with playoff draws.

The 1997 team we had made the 2nd round after an 0-3 start. Hell of a turnaround. If we overcome bad luck they woulda been a 10-11 win team easy that year.

‘71…beat Mt. Pleasant 6-2 in the championship game.

Butch was on that team.

Modern era…since 1972…hard to call that modern. 😂
I guess this fall will be the 50th year.

Just to add a note to this...

The year before (2003) was not a good one by Maiden standards. We lost to Hendersonville (twice), Bessemer City, Polk County, maybe another...the year before that, my freshman year (2002), we were in the western finals, lost at Albemarle by less than one score.

So the pressure was up for us in 2004, we knew we had a squad. 8 of our 11 starters on defense ran a sub 4.8 40-yd dash. We were strong, chippy, fast and had arguably the best running back in the state. We outscored our opponents 483-176 over 15 games (avg. 32 - 12) with 7 games that our defense allowed 1 score or less (3 shutouts).

We beat a 2nd round Lincolnton team, a 3rd round Bandys team that was coming off of 2 consecutive state championship losses to Reidsville, a 1st round Bunker Hill team, a 1st round North Lincoln team, a 2nd round Hendersonville team (we beat them twice that year and shut them out both times), a 2nd round Bessemer City team, an undefeated Polk County team that made it to the 2nd round and also lost to Thomasville, and a 1st round Kings Mountain team.

I tore my ACL on the opening kickoff vs Kings Mountain, took one play off, and played the rest of the game. Got an MRI the next morning that confirmed the torn ACL, took the first two rounds off versus Surry Central and Hendersonville, then played the 3rd round vs a very physical Starmount team...that game ended with a fight as the clocks hit 00:00 that included fans from the Maiden side. As a player that Western Final loss to Thomasville happened in slow motion....we just couldn't get the offense going...defense held strong but gave up third downs.

Truly an amazing team with excellent players and an amazing coaching staff.

I remembered back in 1994 Bessemer City had one more team. I can’t say this was one of their best teams but I remembered they were big and had a good running game. I remembered them losing to Lincolnton in the 1st game like 36-22. They kept it close for a while but Lincolnton pull ahead. Then BC played Lincolnton in the 2A playoffs. I was at that one. They had Lincolnton down and Lincolnton had to fight their way back. Don’t remember the score but it was close. Lincolnton went on to play in the State Championship game but lost that one. I did see Bessemer City play against Maiden, then Lincolnton in the playoffs. They also beat teams like Mooresville as well. I know they had some big dogs on that team.

Thomasville has 41 since 1972 I’m pretty sure. Also that 2004 game vs maiden was incredible to watch…Thomasville played every playoff game on the road except the first round and did it all with a sophomore running back and sophomore fullback.

Thomasville has 36….per NCHSAA playoff records….it may not be accurate…and I did notice that it was through ‘20-‘21.

I could be wrong but Thomasville has been in the ccc for 26 years and made the playoffs 23 times (1985-1997, 2009-present) from 1998-2008 Thomasville made the playoffs every year so that’s 11 times (it’s 10 years but is 11 seasons) and from 1972-1984 we made the playoffs 7 times. Now it does include this past year which is the 21-22 year. All that equals 41 but the discrepancy comes from Thomasville being in the WNCHSAA until the 76 season which was the last season the WNCHSAA existed. So Thomasville does have 36 appearances in the NCHSAA since 1977 but we made the playoffs in the 5 years prior in the WNCHSAA

I see!….wondering if there are others….I’m sure there are.

The best North Surry team in my opinion was 1986. When they had Kelly Holder as QB. They were 7-4 that, but played in very tough conference with Statesville, and West Iredell was 10-0 that year. That Was West Iredell best season ever. North Surry finished 3rd in the Conference. North Surry beat the living daylights out MA that year 38-6.

Remember the 1992 Maiden team with Antione Ickard. Could be one of the best teams never to win a State Title.
I was working at Carolina Mills in Newton at the time Maiden was playing in 1992 State Championships game. And seems like I remembered Maiden fans was talking about Maiden had dropped a pass in the end zone. That could of change the outcome possibly. Anyway Antoine was a beast.

If we had been 2A instead of 3A, I think that team could have made some noise. They were solid from the word go. The Foothills was way too loaded back then. West had that one out of nowhere year and Statesville was really good. Even Wilkes Central was decent (that game film's on YT.) We tried to appeal down but the state was wanting to DQ every sport from making the playoffs every odd numbered season and Coach Atkins said no wisely. The 1987 Basketball team that was a runner up wouldn't have been able to participate and that woulda been a joke.

On JV back when the Northwest was 3A they went 5-1. We played MA twice and split it but we shut Starmount out which was huge because that group was who started their conference title run. That game in 1986 woulda been interesting. We beat the Surry teams like a fiddle that year so I don't see the rest of the Northwest besides Starmount being a problem. That defense the 86 team had is still one of the best besides 66. Put either defense (modernize them of course,) onto any of the teams we had from 2015-2019 and those teams would be killer.

2003 SWO STALLIONS ........ Coming into the last game of the year against Powerhouse Cummings for the 2A title at 15-0. Cummings with qb Bo Williams who threw for over 2800 yards and 35 TD, avg. over 44 pts a game. SWO was a 30+ pt. underdog. After the game coach Padgett said Defense Wins Championships. During the season the Stallions allowed less than 7 pts per game.

Led by End Gary Middlebrooks we put any Cavilier In the dirt who touched the ball, including Williams who was sacked numerous times.

TQ Hardison (RB) for SWO racked up 155 yards rushing and a pair of 3rd Qtr TDs. Our only undefeated season and 2nd Title.

Those cummings teams from like 2000, 2006 were nasty

We beat them in 01’, lost to them in 02’. They were good both those years too.
Yeah 2002 hurt….QB runs the sneak the way it’s been designed to be run since the dawn of time we win back to back titles. Still believe Coach Britt made the right call that’s 100% on the player what’s funny is people still give that QB hell about it everytime he walked in the barbershop 😂😂😂

That was a great team! They beat an undefeated Thomasville team 21-0 in the fourth round I believe. Thomasville was the defending state champs.
Our starting center got hurt late in the Thomasville game. He was a stalwart on that offensive line….starting LB as well….sheeiit….long snapper too!…and a true leader on the team.

It was a devastating loss….heading into the championship game.

West Brunswick had a beast at nose guard…a freshman… I think… named Greene…BIG!…and quick as a cat!

This topic makes me really think about the “ What ifs” in regards to those really good teams that just didn’t win a State Championship. 94 what if Juan Williams doesn’t break his foot. 98 what if Ralph Smith doesn’t fumble multiple times inside the redzone 2002 what if Jamar Hicks runs the QB sneak the right way 2015 what if the refs don’t completely blow that call……I’m sure every school has their own “what ifs” thinking back on ours man we had a lot of good teams not win the big one

‘79 Maiden…”The Belt”….Starting RB belt broke….took him out to replace it… the back up fumbles the pitch inside our 20….Swain County scores. Maiden loses 7-6….Swain rolls to State Championship.

‘98 Maiden….”The Call”…going for it on 4th down unsuccessfully….Coach Brown…NEVER!..got over that one! We lose to Starmount in OT… they roll to the championship.

‘02 Maiden….”was he in”….lost 25 22….at the goal line. Albemarle rolls on to take the prize.

I’ve got…like 10 more….😂😂😂…I just can’t take it anymore!

Let’s not forget the the NO Good XP attempt vs Western Alamance in the 3rd of playoffs in 00’ maybe. Double OT, XP is ruled No good and they win by 1. I think our kicker is still on the field as we speak in disbelief waiting for an overrule.

The what ifs would make a good topic for sure. I was just thinking this morning before I started reading the forums about my team South Iredell. The year they won the 2012 State title. The 2 previous years they went undefeated in regular season but didn’t win the State Championship game. But in 2012 they lost 2 games in regular season. One to Statesville and the other to Newton Conover. N.C. was their only conference loss. The one with Statesville, South didn’t have their main RB and the QB was out the first half I believe. South was down at HT really good but they started to make a come back but didn’t win the game. What if the QB played both halfs and the RB played as well. With NC. They still didn’t have their RB. What if they had him in that game as well.

That '98 loss, I was with Coach Brown on the call and thought Piggy would get that first down. The Rams just rose to the occasion and took the momentum from there until the end of the game.

Two other very good reasons for going for it we’re the previous put was almost blocked and there was a 25 mph wind blowing in our face. Cummings was out of timeouts, if we convert we run out the clock.
