I really used to enjoy the WNC picks and rankings on here so I figured I would bring them back since I have not seen them on here in a while. Besides that the ACT has gone to crap and charges people to just look at their rankings. We have a week of down time so why not have a little debate. Here is what I think.
1. Reynolds(10-1) - The Rockets are the real deal and a serious contender for a state title in 3AA which is no easy feat. They have surprisingly had a few closer games lately but I don't think there are many teams in WNC that could beat them on their best night.
2. Erwin(9-1) - Yes I am biased because I am an Erwin fan but my team is legit good. Offensively they are right there with ACR. When they play good on defense like they did vs Tuscola last Friday they can play with about anyone. Erwin and Reynolds could very likely play again and hopefully the Warriors show up this time.
3. Mtn Heritage(9-1) - This team does not get enough credit for how good they really are. They lost arguably the best player in school history and they have not really let up any. Their only loss was to #2 Erwin. They are a contender in 2A once again.
4. Pisgah(10-1) - The Bears have had a great season and will be a tough out in the playoffs, espically if they get a #1 seed. Their only loss was to a very good Tenn team. I think Pisgah and Heritage are very close on this poll as well. It could go either way.
5. Mitchell(9-2) - The Mounties are going to make some serious noise in 1A if that is were they end up. Their only losses are to #2 Erwin and #3 Heritage. They beat they brakes off Franklin and about every other team they played. If Murphy goes to 1AA I seriously think Mitchell will cruise to the title in 1A.
6. Murphy(9-1) - The Dogs are arguably the best 1A team in WNC. I ranked Mitchell above them just because I think they played a slightly better schedule. That being said Murphy is legit title contender as well if they go small 1A.
7. Asheville(8-3) - This is what you might consider a down year for the Cougars but they are fully capable of beating anyone on this list on any given night with the exception of maybe ACR. Two of their losses were to #1 and #2 so it is not like they lost to some pushover.
8. Robbinsville(9-2) - Here is another team with losses to good teams. They lost to Christ school and Murphy. They will be a force in 1A no doubt and could pull a upset over Mitchell or Murphy if they catch them on a off night.
9. Brevard(8-3) - This years Devils teams brought back memories of some of the past Brevard teams. They lost two all top 10 teams and had a huge win over Franklin.
10. Smoky Mtn(8-3) - The Mustangs had a fine season after losing their head coach in the offseason. They will probably not go far in the brutal 2A playoffs but they have had a year to be proud of.
