#7 Clinton vs #10 South Granville RD2

It was my first time in a plane. 😂

South Granville intrigues me….are they good?
They have 500 total passing yards on the season. They have have a 1200yrd back. They are gonna line up, try to run it down our throats, maybe hit us with a PA pass, but if Clinton gets ahead, forces them to 3rd and longs, we should win because they aren’t a comeback type offense.

Take no one lightly. It’s the playoffs.

Refer to my comment toward the top of the thread....or go to maxpreps and check the schedule and stats.....it felt tough to get a read on how good the Vikings were for this two year cycle playing that brutal schedule of four 3A and two 4A playoff teams, and all but one still playing in 2nd round, then playing the last three against teams where simmonsratings projected a blowout...SG returned all but 4-5 starters from last year's team that finished 5-7, won the 2A division of split conference, won 1st Rd game big at home against Midway, then lost a weeping and gnashing of teeth game 13-6 at Nash Central in 2nd Rd....this year's wins and losses mirrored last year through that brutal stretch except flipping the conference opener at Southern Durham to a win....the losses however, were much more competitive this year against Heritage (before they lost their starting QB) and Lee, also had a MUCH more competitive 1st Rd game this year with Roanoke Rapids....It was nice to get the big win over Midway last year 44-21 in the 1st Rd in a game that actually didn't feel that close (it was 35-7 in middle of 3rd qtr; SG controlled trenches on both sides of ball) while Nash Central had a knock-down drag-out with SW Onslow for four quarters in 1st Rd a game they very easily could have lost....of course this year Beddingfield gave Clinton quite a test...in the 1st half anyway, and if you haven't read about the SG/RR game, my full article & box score is on one of the 1st Rd scores thread...I know Clinton has been tough, is tough, and always will be tough....don't know how good the SG Vikings are, but hope they will be good enough to do better than the 45-7 2nd Rd loss there in 2016; hoping to be good enough to get to the 4th quarter on Thursday night and still have a chance to win the game

Looking over the stats a couple milestones can be reached for some Darkhorses

QB Nydarion Blackwell needs 84 passing yards to hit that 1,000 mark only 2 other Clinton QBs have reached(Horne-2001 Smith-2021) worth noting both them were seniors Blackwell only a sophomore.

Josiah McLaurin 97 yards to hit 1,000 yard rushing mark. Putting together quite a high school resume was a 1,000 WR last year as a sophomore at Hobbton now has a chance to hit that milestone rushing. Also still 1 punt return TD away from tying a school record with 6. 27 total TDs on the season.

Amaris Williams 2 sacks away from 20 which I believe is a pretty solid benchmark for a High School DL. 43 TFL aswell.

End of the 1st Quarter Clinton 0 SG 0 sloppy wet first quarter. Lots of bobbled snaps and good defense by both teams. Couple missed opportunities inside the 20 for Clinton.

Clinton had a 3rd chance inside the 5 but penalties really killed that drive that ended in a miss FG. That was a 20+ play drive…..2-3 times Clinton has scored it’s been a flag

Halftime 0-0

penalties the story of the game in my opinion……Clinton dominated yards and time of possession but have 0 points to show for it as some untimely penalties and a bobbled snapped really killed a couple of drives. SG only ran maybe 9 offensive plays in the 1st half. SG gets the ball to start the 3rd special teams may be the deciding factor cause a KO return for a TD may win it cause doesn’t look like it will be much scoring in this one

Touchdown Clinton Jeffrey Arnette scores on the jet sweep. 2 point conv no good. Clinton 12 SG 0. 19 seconds left in 3rd

Thoughts on tonight defense played awesome controlled the line of scrimmage tackled well…..Offensively the elements really hit hard a lot of bobbled snaps and balls on the ground but Clinton great adjustment basically had your most sure handed athlete take the game over as Josiah McLaurin had himself a game in the wildcat offense all night. 295 yards 2 TDs like 39-40 carries. Had a couple holding calls take some points away but for the way the weather was I can’t complain. Now you move on to East Duplin next week a game a lot of the guys wanted so here we go.

Great to meet DarkHorse04 and other press box personalities for Clinton.....who had a great running game and a stingy defense....strong in the trenches, will have more stats later but can report RB #2 for Clinton had 40 carries for 295

Yeah I forgot to mention I felt like the offensive line played one of their best games really controlled the line of scrimmage did have those couple penalties but on broken plays it happens……he’s got 2 offers but these local colleges round here need to calling #2 ASAP special player

Another nice called game. Enjoyed it. Congratulations to the Darkhorses. Cant be anything but a classic next week. I dont know about Clinton being the underdog. I think its even up. Although I am biased toward the ECC teams I still have respect for Clinton. Hopefully we get back to somewhat normal next year.

GO .... GO (INSERT EITHER OR HERE)

And totally off subject but props to Clinton soccer team who also played last night was down 2-0 vs Franklin academy late came back to force overtime winning 3-2 Clinton plays Manteo Tuesday for the Eastern Championship.

Here's my full report:

CLINTON - South Granville's varsity football season came to an end on a rain soaked night in Sampson County, facing the Clinton Dark Horses, who improved to 11-1, and will move on to the third round of the playoffs to visit the East Duplin Panthers. The Vikings wrapped up the season with a .500 record at 6-6. Clinton lined up to receive the opening kickoff, and the ball skipped away, back to the Dark Horse 10 yard line, but the receiving team was able to cover up the loose ball. They would start the game with run six straight direct snap, or wildcat runs to Josiah McLaurin, one of which he took for 49 yards, but after a bad snap cost the Horses 15 yards and put them behind the chains, they would eventually punt, and pin the Vikings deep, at their own four yard line. From there, South Granville went three and out and had to punt. Clinton would hold on to the ball for eight plays on their next drive, including moving the chains once, but more miscues, including a holding penalty in the red zone, and a fumble in the red zone, which the Horses recovered, but against forced them into a fourth down kick. On this series, it was a 36 yard field goal attempt for J.J. Baggett, but it landed in the end zone; short of the goal past. The Vikings took over for their second offensive series, but again, it would end with a punt after a three and out. Clinton started their next drive with less than a minute to play in the first quarter, and would keep the football until there was less than a minute to play in the second quarter; moving the chains four times, on a 21 play, 63 yard drive, but like on their previous two offensive series, the Dark Horse offense was hurt by self-inflicted wounds, including three penalties; two of them committed inside the 10 yard line. With the Viking defense appearing to bend, but not break, the drive finally ended with another missed field goal, on a 25 yard attempt, in the final minute of the first half. The first half ended with a quarterback kneel-down play. The score was still 0-0 but the total offense numbers were favoring Clinton 149-2.

The Vikings had the ball first in the third quarter, and after the kickoff went out of bounds. On the first snap, from the South Granville 35 yard line, Khawan Bobbitt broke loose around the right side for his longest run of the game, 20 yards, allowing the Viking offense to both cross midfield, and move the chains for the first time in the game, but four plays later, the Vikings were again forced to punt. A good kick from Evan Zollo and good coverage, plus a personal foul penalty, backed up Clinton to its own three yard line, seemingly putting the Viking defense in a great spot to take advantage of any bad snap or potential turnover, but it was the Dark Horses who would seize the momentum, when Josiah McLaurin eluded two or three would-be Viking tacklers in the backfield, and rumbled 93 yards to put a score on board of 6-0, after a failed two point conversion. The Vikings would start the next series with decent field position after a short kick and eight yard return by Mayon Myers, but it would result in a four and out, and turn the ball over on downs to Clinton. From here, Clinton's offense did move the chains once, but were forced to punt after the Viking defense held. With a 6-0 game, late in the third quarter, South Granville seemed to be in a good position; taking over possession with a chance to go tie the game, or take the lead, but on the punt, two Viking blockers were out of position, and at least one of them touched the football, allowing Clinton to recover at the South Granville 10 yard line. The Dark Horses would score, two plays later on a 10 yard run from Jeffrey Arnette. Another failed two point conversion kept the score t 12-0. The Vikings' next series carried over into the fourth quarter, but it brought more bad news to the Vikings, with an interception ending any hope of getting on the board during that series. Jeffrey Arnette appeared to have a huge return but many of the yards were nullified by a penalty. Clinton's drive would start at the Viking 35 yard line, and take 12 plays to get into the end zone, in another drive married by a penalty. On a fourth down play, the Vikings were flagged for pass interference in the end zone, allowing Clinton to score another touchdown to, for all intents and purposes put the game away, making it a three score game with less than six minutes to play. The scoring came on a five yard touchdown run from Josiah McLaurin and an extra point from J.J. Baggett, making it a 19-0 game. The Vikings appeared to have a big kickoff return from Antoine Doyle Jr., but a personal foul penalty took away 15 yards of field position, plus a bad snap on a third down and short, cost the Vikings 12 more yards, and put them behind the chains on fourth down, where South Granville attempted a pass but it was picked off by Alex Evans for the Dark Horses, who returned it 39 yards for a touchdown. Another extra point from Baggett made it a 26-0 game with four minutes remaining on the game clock. The Vikings' final series did feature four complete passes and one first down, but another self-inflicted wound; this time another bad snap getting away, cost South Granville 21 yards. The football would eventually be turned over on downs, where Clinton lined up to kneel and go to the locker room.

Man I hope next week it's not all running man I tell u

The way the weather was it was no choice it was wet sloppy and just snapping the ball was an adventure. Can’t expect to pass in conditions like that
If I was Clinton I would run it more often....maybe not wildcat 35 times a game but definitely use that big offensive line and pound it on the ground when the situation calls for it....I remember Darkhorse04 saying Clinton likes to take what the defense gives you, but last night, I would not say the SG defense was playing the pass or conceding the run, even on the first drive and especially after the first drive when all six snaps were all directly to McLaurin to tuck and run; it was just the Clinton running game being that good...looking back over SG stats from other games against playoff teams, SG held Southern Durham to 41 yards rushing, Vance Co. to 3 yards rushing (they're more pass-oriented) in a game we lost, Hillside (even though that was our worst loss) to 137 with their leading rusher at 90 who had huge numbers against many 4A opponents; gave up more in the passing game that night too....we did give up a lot of rushing yards against Heritage, Lee Co., and Southern Nash but never anything like 295 to one guy....previous season high against us was BJ Brown at Lee Co. (who has been starting for at least 3 years), he had 199, next highest was one of the So. Nash RBs for 129....and they both had other ball carriers getting lots of carries and throwing the ball some, (especially Lee....SN mainly throws to TEs on play action), Clinton basically showed on the opening drive what their game plan was, and stayed successful with it all night.....now after putting that on film, watch 'em show up and throw it 40 times next week if the weather's good #Sarcasm (sort of)

I was told they were in the locker room by 7:35. Considering the temperatures next week, that would be welcome again.
Yes in the first half the only stoppages were for two timeouts, one incomplete pass, the break between quarters, five changes of possession, one play going out of bounds, and a couple of penalties (most of which they wound the clock since it was already running)
