I know we are only one year in to the current realignment, but I'm not a real fan of doing away with the subdivisions. I believe it was done because the NCHSAA was under so much scrutiny at the time over $$$$. With the numbers of high schools in NC and the disparity in the sizes despite classification, I believe there is a case to be made to bring back subdivisions or move to 6 classifications as many other states do. Anyone have an opinion or is it too early for anyone to talk about football?

We went through this gauntlet in the winter. I have all the breakdowns somewhere on my PC. I'll look tomorrow...but I believe have 3 classifications for the sake of having easier conferences geographically, and playoffs be split to 6 classifications.

Look at the thread for 6 classifications on December 10th 2021

Same here. In your opinion, would having a 5th Class a (+) for the state of NC?
With new schools constantly coming online especially in Wake and Mecklenburg counties, I think the addition of a 5th classification is inevitable. But hey, I'm just a peon LOL.

I think six classifications is the way to go. There's a huge discrepancy in 4A and 1A numbers. And considering most of these high schools are built for around 1500 kids the new ones are going to fall into that category aren't they? So 2A and 3A are going to be even closer which means they're going to have to up the numbers for 1A and lower the numbers for 4A to get an even amount of schools in. Isn't that how they do it?

Thinking big. Great way to go

They need to get away from the classifications being the same size. Allow 1A and 4A too have less schools. Then subdivide 2A and 3A for all team sport playoffs.

Whike we are at it, let’s have one state champion in each individual event. One champ in the 100 meter dash, one in the 1600 meter run, one in the long jump, singles tennis, wrestling, golf, et al. In relays and doubles, et al go to classifications.

Never thought of that. Looking back at some of the old stuff it looks like one and two and three classifications were all grouped together in all sports but football. And maybe basketball.

There was nothing better than the state championship in individual wrestling and track & field.

Two of the most impressive resumes in wrestling came from 2A wrestlers and they took on all comers during the regular season tournaments. Two national track records set by NC boys were a 1A and 2A athlete.

or the addition of new schools could reduce the population of big schools and make them 3A or smaller 4A schools.

Why Subdivisions?

I'm not sure in which county you live, but here in Wake a new school opens with a capacity of 2,200 but within a year or two it's already overcrowded to the point the school has to be capped. Apex Friendship hasn't been open for too long and it's at or over capacity. A third school, Felton Grove has been approved so it will be Apex's third high school.

I think he would be looking at more of a scenario where a 4A school is split into two 2A or a 3A and 2A. We have seen this in some areas but I do not expect a lot of construction the next few years to do that only to take care of issues like you referenced in Wake County.

Very possible Murphy consolidates with Hiwassee Dam and Andrews removing three 1A schools, two othat play football, and adding one 2A school.

NC needs to do what AZ does

have 1-6A
Bc it’s very similar here # wise to NC so

and 1A teams who can’t maintain # can play 8man football
