2A Numbers- How many does your team have out?

M193- thanks for your thoughts. I do wish everyone luck this season. Looks as if the conference could be very competive this year although i do measure middle school success in our program just for the fact that it’s the same kids every year. No luxury of choosing from a couple of hundred male athletes - the same 80 males play all male sports the entire year-Look forward to the season

It should be a fun season. We may see the same schools at the top, but I sure don't think that is a given.

My allegiance is really torn this year. My kids went to ND (youngest graduated last year) and I have been an avid fan for 10 years or so. I live in the Oak Grove district and I think highly of the head coach there. I'm not the only one, I'm sure.

I saw a picture of the JV and counted 39 players for them. Now, I'm no math major by any means, but 39 + 42 = 81 all day where I come from:). Now, it could be that they have 15 more players who just weren't there at the time the pictures were taken for various means. Happens every year. BTW, the JV team has some really good size on it. By the time some of those kids are juniors and seniors they are going to be stout.

I’m sure that there were some who weren
Here is just my $0.02 on Oak Grove. Yes, they have a very good head coach as we at North Davidson know all too well. Yes, the Grizzlies will improve pretty much every year as long as he is there. Now, I know teams can make major improvements from one year to the next, it happens across the state every single year. I do expect Oak Grove to be improved this year as well, they should be because of another year under Holcombs guidance. Could they be a sleeper? Sure, why not, as others have stated ND and Ledford took massive losses to graduation, especially on both defenses.

Look at some of last years games for instance. Oak Grove was a Jekyll and Hyde team all year last year. Understandable in a first year varsity program. Two games where this was true was the games against Central Davidson and Ledford. Central Davidson was downright terrible last year and have been for several years now. Oak Grove barley won this game against the Spartans and if not for a late turnover by CD, the Spartans would have taken the victory. Central was terrible, I can't say this enough because everyone who saw them will agree with me. Now the Ledford game. Ledford eventually won the CCC and had a VERY good defense with just enough offense to keep winning games. Oak Grove went to Ledford and gave the Panthers ALL they could handle for four quarters. If not for a few things here and there the Grizzlies could have pulled off that major upset.

Then you have games like Lexington where I had some friends at that game who told me that OG acted as if they didn't even want to be on the field. They seemed disinterested. Now, I can tell you this, you won't see a Holcomb coached team act like that but once.

Is the CCC up for grabs this year? Of course it is, this league is as wide open among my top 5 teams (ND, T-ville, Salis, OG and Led) as it probably ever will. The one thing that I don't like about OG's opening two games is that I'm really surprised Holcomb didn't try to challenge his team to start the season. Maybe it is just that hard to get teams scheduled, I don't know, but Trinity and Jordan-Matthews aren't really going to test you. Maybe he just wanted to get his second varsity year started with a couple of easy wins to get his team some positive momentum heading into the conference. By the time OG and ND play each other, North Davidson will have already played 3A Parkland and 4A Davie County. Ledford opens with 4A Glenn and a strong 2A Randleman squad. Does that mean anything? Who knows with high school kids.:)

Solid and accurate post here.

I’m not going to put too much stock into OG being a contender until they can get over the hump and beat someone that they aren’t supposed to beat. The Thomasville and Lexington beat downs, case in point. Neither were contests. Some of it was due to injury and a very thin bench... But T’ville had a very thin bench too.

As for middle school football, ND ran the middle school conference for decades and then went to the high school level and consistently went .500 in the W/L columns. ND had way more kids and that was that.

Did Central Davidson win the middle school conference this past year? I think they did. Anyone want to take a guess at how that will turn out when they get to high school? My crystal ball is leaning towards, “not well”.

North won the middle school title for years and years, granted when they got to high school they were playing 4A teams and that made a big difference, but yes middle school and high school ball are not very comparable. Some of it is coaching and some of it is kids growing...

Tyro went 6-2, 6-2, 7-1 from 2008- 2010. Those same kids won 3, 3, 4 and 2 games in high school.

I’m not talking about the 4A days. I’m talking about the late 1970’s thru 1991. Those teams were below average at best. But yes, some of those years were 4A as well. Still, North wasn’t good. Coaching staff wasn’t all that good back then.

Ah, gotcha. Tville and Lexington were dominant back then, but yes ND was the epitome of average during the Hinkle years. No chance at all the first time we went to 4A, and things didn't get better when we came back down until Cline came. Then the bottom fell out again for four years... Thank goodness for Stewart and especially Butts.

The roster numbers look a lot more even this year and I'm hoping that means no more blowouts by the likes of ND and Ledford. The last 2 years with both of them having 3A and 4A numbers playing the smaller CCC schools was just not fair IMO. I see East has 44 listed on their varsity roster right now but that is with about 3 or 4 Sophmores being pulled up. Also, West has 60 listed on varsity but that is with about 15 Sophmores who will probably mostly be on JV when the season starts so they are probably going to dress around mid-40s for varsity games. Ledford must be sand bagging on their roster list because as of right now they only have 30 listed on Maxpreps. I'm really hoping for very competitive games and a conference race between multiple teams the whole season that comes down to the last couple weeks to decide the champion.

Central Davidson is reporting 63 out. 30 Varsity and 33 JV. Heavy on the freshmen this year. Which is good for them!

Seems like they had at least that many in that offensive scrum they used to call an offense. You know that one where everybody would push and pull the ball carrier down the field.

Lol..I believe that offense was a double wing offense and that was a wedge play where the OL all pushes together. Kind of boring to watch but very effective.

And much of it illegal the way they ran it. Not to mention the illegal procedure on every play.
But it’s like I was taught early in my basketball officiating career....the player who palms the ball on every dribble will never have it called.

Love the double wing. Very physical and that coach knew how to coach it. Unfortunately he was also too intense for the people at Central so they fired him and the program went down the toilet. Perfect system for their type of athlete.

Think it might have had anything to do with having to forfeit their only decent season due to using the illegal player that the assistant coach took home every day to his out of district residence?
I do agree, however, about the system fitting their type of player.

I think it had more to do with the principal walking by while the coach called them a bunch of p*ssies. But yes, they did get caught and forfeited accordingly.

Even as good as they were on offense, their defense was still giving up loads of points anyway.

Speaking of that system, West should try it. They always have big linemen and strong but not necessarily fast backs. Rugby in shoulder pads and helmets might work for them...

Ooooh. I had forgotten about that!

Anybody have any numbers on Montgomery Central? Nothing on MaxPreps.

I'll see them next Monday as we scrimmage them and Salisbury I'll do a mini scouting report on this thread. I'm cuirious myself I expect them to be solid but who really knows.

The wedge was my favorite play to use in pee wee football. You want to talk about the other coaches and parents loosing their minds after you keep doing it over and over marching down the feild to score. God how I love the WEDGE !!!!

Seen Central Montgomery yesterday.. wasn't that impressed. It's gonna take them a bit of time to get going. ITJ's right.. I counted 47 for them yesterday. 27 on varsity and only 20 JV kids. Their #'s are really low for both sides.

Their line had really good size and their skill players had some speed but on the whole they just weren't that impressive. The linemen were really slow and they had a real predictable offense. Pistol set with a lot of jet sweeps and movement.. really easy to figure after a series or two. Defense looked lost at points.. must have a lot of young players out.

I think they will be better in a couple of years but they have some growing pains to get over.

On the plus side their uni's were really nice for a first year school, reminds me of App State.
