One thing that is always interesting to me is how similar these state tournaments always are - your typical powerhouses of each region always seem to rise to the top come area playoff time. I know they are all seeded 1 & 2's for the state tournament, but all of these teams were pretty much the top seeds going into their respective area playoffs:

Area 1: Both #1 seeds
Area 2: #1 and #3 seeds
Area 3: Both #1 seeds
Area 4: Both #1 seeds

Should make for an exciting state tournament.

And ER right above Randolph (Asheboro) County…🤬🤬🤬
The Kidd12, I had been casually reading scores from the four areas (Thanks to Don) and not much else outside of Cherryville. Then, last week I saw some comments from Area III posters about Eastern Randolph dropping out. I found an article from the Salisbury Post saying Post 81 was set to take on Rowan in the semifinals and that Eastern had been doing well but forfeited because of a lack of players. Also read in a Randolph County news source that at one point they had won nine consecutive games.

Something seemed peculiar about it because they'd obviously been doing well. I hope it wasn't something similar to the 2014 state tournament in Lexington when a noticeably good High Point team had to drop out. I went over there to watch a few of those games. The High Point incident seemed to take away from the tournament.
Mainly, I wanted to tell you I'm sorry about your team, Knowing you are a proud Post 81 alumnus going back to when they were Area III champions and possessed a long winning streak.

I remember the 2014 tournament like it was yesterday. It was an absolute three-ring circus. That High Point team was really good.

As always thank you sir for your input. Talked to a player just this morning (sound like an old guy huh?) Now mind you he is biased. Was told it was just Pugh being Pugh and player in question was completely legal…
Asheboro…
Pffft…
Who decided to call them Randolph County?!?

I am betting on drama at this tournament, always happens. Happened in the Junior tournament.

That 2014 High Point team was one of the best teams I have ever seen in-person in American Legion baseball in NC.

They drubbed Shelby, like, 12-3 and would have most likely finished undefeated and went onto SE regionals. I knew both the head coach and assistant coach very well (assistant coach is my brother/head coach is a very close friend and still a HC himself elsewhere) and the player in question was disqualified for going to a showcase camp sponsored by a company that helped sponsor American legion baseball (seriously, I am not making this up). It was in their handbook, for goodness sake. An entire ad page.

Shelby cost that HP team, for sure, the state tournament championship and what would have been a very deep run in regionals, probably even a World Series berth.

I have had ZERO respect for Shelby legion ever since. Probably still won’t ever have any for them - truth be told.

33, I recall some of the High Point players sitting in the stands watching the game and really felt bad for them. Shelby was actually a good team, that year, and HP being able to beat them tells me they were special.
About Eastern Randolph, this year, from what I'm guessing they must have beaten Randolph County at least one time and not knowing much about them (Randolph) I assume they are good, as usual.

As usual good post..
It’s ASHEBORO though no matter what they say…😂😂👍

Thank you, my friend. First time I ever heard of Post 45 was in the early 60's. Gastonia had eliminated Cherryville that summer and were playing in a best four out of seven for the west (semifinals under playoff format, then, which I know you know about having played in them).
A few days later I Went with my father and another man to Sims Park in Gastonia to watch one of their games which Asheboro would win. Coming back up the road my dad and this man were talking about playing poker at the Moose Club. I asked him where Asheboro was, he said "over yonder". Didn't explain, point or even gesture with his head, just said "over yonder".

As best as I can recall it was just a plain uniform that said Asheboro across the jersey. Gastonia had a natty outfit, even then, it was like the Milwaukee Braves.

Mr. L,
If my memory serves me correctly, there was minor league team in Gastonia, was it part of Braves?

Sportsnut, at that time I'm thinking they were a Pittsburgh affiliate, the name of their South Atlantic team (Gastonia) were the Pirates. In the early 70's they became the Gastonia Rangers (Texas Rangers affiliate). In the late 80's they were affiliated with the Montreal Expos, and then Hickory took them away from Gastonia and turned them into Crawdads. I think the Crawdads are with the Rangers, too. One time they were with the Chicago White Sox. Always wondered if my friend Cheerduck had anything to do with them moving to Hickory. ;)

Postscript: This is a guess but the influence for the Milwaukee Braves type uniforms worn by Gastonia Post 23 might have been Tony Cloninger, a local guy who pitched for the Braves and moved with them to Atlanta, and much later was a bullpen coach for the Yankees. He was popular in Lincoln and Gaston counties. Post 23 kept those uniforms for a number of years. They looked good.

I have a friend who pitched for Gastonia Post 23 in the late 60's. I'll ask him if he knows why they wore that style.
Remember him saying one of the best hitters he ever faced was Ronnie Collins who played for a legion team, back then, called Greensboro Cone. He said this guy Collins was younger than a lot of players but was a man among boys. I saw Collins hit a home run in Gastonia.
I think the best hitter I can recall in legion baseball was from your area, Alec Zumwalt, who played for Kernersville. Cherryville tried to pitch down and away from him and he golfed it out of the park lol. I saw that.

Alec is the current hitting coach for Kansas City Royals.

Just curious how people determine which rules must be followed and which are ok to ignore. Those of us who have been involved for a while know who made mistakes to be on the wrong side of the rules and those who repetitively chose to ignore them. Unbelievable that the ones that consistently ignored rules can be the victim. I do feel bad for the their kids and more for the ones who were cheated out of an opportunity to continue their season. If everyone would know the rules and follow them, less kids would get shafted and the organization would fare better. Legion will always be as strong as the weakest programs and those tasked with leadership.

I was involved in legion baseball as a coach for 6 years. I’ll be completely honest, I think sometimes they just make a decision just to make the problem go away, whether it is right or wrong. I LOVE legion baseball - please don’t take this as me being bitter - but a youth movement needs to happen badly with some of the commissioners/head of operations.

I have I have spoken about a few incidents already, but another one that still bothers me (to this day) was the junior legion state championships in 2016 in Swansboro. It was the Final Four and it was down to Concord, Bear Grass, Rutherford County, and South Caldwell. Per tournament rules, in the semi-finals, they were SUPPOSED to match-up teams that have not previously played each other (unless 100% necessary) and the matchups were supposed to be Concord vs. South Caldwell and RC vs. Bear Grass (at this time, RC was the lone undefeated team). Concord had beaten Bear Grass and lost to RC, but had not yet played South Caldwell - same thing between Bear Grass/RC.

The old men who were in charge of the tournament had become quite ornery (as weather had become a major factor on day 3 - causing some long weather delays and pushbacks of games) and just decided that they didn’t want to do it that way because they “were too tired”. Long story short - Bear Grass got payback on Concord with their ace on the mound and RC had to beat South Caldwell, an area 4 opponent, in the semis.

Oh yeah….the rules should carry the same weight for those administering them as well as those following them. There are some dark shady crap that has transpired in the past, but thankfully for the welfare of the organization, those situations no longer exist.

In 1966 Greensboro Cone, representing the West, met Asheboro , the squad that represented the East for the State Championship. Cone jumped out to a 3-0 lead and Asheboro won four straight to capture the 'Ship. In 1967, Asheboro led the series 3-0 and Cone won four straight. Ronnie Collins was the shortstop for Cone and later attended Pembroke along with a bevy of Greensboro area players. Mister Collins had all the tools and later signed with the New York Mets, and if I'm not mistaken, gave it up because of the lifestyle of minor league baseball. Cone had a pitcher named John Austin that could throw bullets and the catcher was Leslie Thompson. His brother, Lewis Thompson played first base, Jimmy Fresinger played second and Bobby Chappel played third. Asheboro had a great shortstop named Darrell Moody and a pitcher that stood around five five named Dollyhigh that could sling it, too. The '66 State Championship was played in Greensboro's Memorial Stadium in front of 9, 000 fans. Mister Lincolnton mentioned uniforms and Cone's were green and white with a big green G on the upper left of the front of their jerseys, while Asheboro's were blue and white with Asheboro Post 45 on the front.
P.S. Speaking of Sims Legion Park in Gastonia, I happily escorted a Gastonia maiden to a minor league game there years ago. It was on a sunny, mid April game and we sat in the third base stands. Under the grandstand roof there was a grand total of sixteen people sitting there, so the official attendance for that particular event was eighteen.
P. S. S. Greensboro had another Legion team back then called Burtner that also had some great players. Cone drew mainly from Page and Northwest Guilford while Burtner drew mainly from Grimsley and Northeast Guilford.

Great stuff!

If I'm remembering right about the High Point team being illegal. Shelby lost to High Point and then protested a player they said played in a unsanctioned tournament. The tournament was sponsored by NCAL . There was even a ad in the program. The NC officials denied the protest and Shelby called to Indianapolis and they were the ones that declare High Point illegal. SMH

100% correct, sir. Spot on.

GSO, thanks for the information on the Greensboro teams. Never saw Burtner play but I saw Cone play against Hickory one year and Gastonia another year. I’m thinking Burtner also won the state championship once but I’m not sure. It’s hard to imagine 9,000 fans at a legion game.

Speaking of illegal players I just heard this morning that Fuquay-Varina's star pitcher Luke Brown who has committed to play for Clemson has been declared ineligible for this state tournament due to the dual participation rule which disallows playing travel ball during the N.C. State Tournament. That's probably why he did not pitch in Fuquay's game 1 against Randolph last night.
