The best West Caldwell Warriors football team ever

That one in 1987 sure was a handful for the Golden Lions.... Clint Gwaltney kicked a eventual game winning 50 yard field goal to win ....Great tough team

It was 87.It was a great game that night in Shelby with that being one of all time great Golden Lion teams with about 6 or 7 D1's.

The 1980's was a solid decade for West they had it going on then. Their worst seasons then was in 83 and 89 when they only won 6, that's very impressive and something to strive for as a program.

1987 they made it almost to the 3A title game as Shelby won in that thriller. West finished 12-2 that year. 1985 debatable was the better team in the stats and averages department. They gave up 5 points that year. 87 had the better offense but it's D was a little less good. That would have been a good fantasy game what if to see.

The 2002 team was killer. They beat West Wilkes and split the M Valley with them that year but that was their last winning season before falling apart.

1987 was for sure the best year for the Warriors. Coach Biggerstaff had things
in order. Would love to see that program get back to the glory days.

Don't know anything about West Caldwell....but according to carolinapreps.com website (who has records of every team in the state from 1960 forward),,,,

1984........Record was 9-3 with a 2nd round playoff loss to Kannapolis

1985........Record was 10-1 with 1st round playoff loss to Forest Hills

1987........Record was 12-2 with a 4th round playoff loss to Shelby

Russel Gibson played on that 87 team. I would have to agree that 87 was the best West Caldwell team. Would like to see them return to glory. They might have the right Coach to do it.

From what two games I saw last year I believe they finally found a good young coach. The kids respond well to his excitement and he seems to have a passion for turning the program around. They will make some waves next year in the SD7 conference.

West has athletes. That has never been the problem. It's just can they get them to play football and not focus on basketball. Here in the past 10-12 years it's been basketball players in Lenoir head to West and football players head to Hibriten. That will have to change for them to contend with the East Lincolns and Newtons of the 2A world in this area.
