North Henderson @ AC Reynolds
Enka @ Asheville
Erwin @ North Buncombe
Tuscola @ Smoky Mountain
TC Roberson @ West Henderson

Who ya got??

AC Reynolds by 42

Asheville by 20

North Buncombe by 8

Smoky Mountain by 17

West Henderson by 24

I'm going to say that November 1st will be the conference championship game when West Henderson comes to AC Reynolds both undefeated in conference play. The WMAC is really weak outside of WH and ACR, the battle for 3rd place should be fun to watch since that spot gets a automatic playoff birth, not sure the 4th place team will get a playoff wild card spot.

WMAC Conference Standings and Schedules......

Is the level of play in the WMAC rapidly declining or is it just me? Erwin terrible, Asheville terrible, Roberson terrible, North buncombe terrible, Tuscola terrible, north Henderson terrible, enka terrible.

And before I get jumped, I mean terrible in the sense that none of these teams has a remote prayer of winning a playoff game if they even make it.

I think even by Reynolds standards, they don’t believe they are as good as the previous 2-3 teams. Is the level of talent and play declining here or is it just me?

Outside of Reynolds it sure seems that way. I mean Erwin looks bad, and yet it seems that Asheville(who ran the mountains for years) is worse.

I think to a degree, you are correct but I will say that coaching has something to do with it also. I can't speak for for anyone else but I love our head coach and I believe he gets the most out of his guys. He also has some very good assistants too. They all get along very well and it shows on Friday nights the vast majority of the time. Granted, we do have some good to very good players on ACR but the coaching is top notch also.

I agree it has ALOT to do with coaching. However I also believe it starts at the youth level and middle school as well. I know our youth league runs the varsity offense (at least a basic version of it), our youth league has several coaches that played for Coach Laws and its great the way our varsity coaches work with the younger coaches at the lower level. Our JV’s also prep the kids to play “their” position in the future. Yes they play to win, but teaching fundamentals and basic techniques for when they get to varsity they will know their position. The varsity doesn’t have to spend a lot of time teaching how to play their position, they know how to play it when they get there so basically they just have to learn concepts, plays, and not a lot of practice time is wasted. I remember when Poss came to ACR everyone thought he was crazy to platoon, however it can be done simply by teaching at the lower levels. We have guys starting that if we didn’t platoon wouldn’t play near as much but they have been in the system and learned their position and are good at what they do. Are they the most talented or best athletes not necessarily but the system has made them starters. If a team has 30-40 players they should be platooning and basically no one in WNC does, that makes a huge difference come 4th quarter of critical games.

Yea platooning helps, but I’m convinced you could combine Asheville high and Roberson right now and have a roster of 70 players and still not win a playoff game. There is that little talent out there.

I will agree that our youth league does an excellent job of getting the kids started in the ACR system. I know when I helped in the youth league, every team ran some kind of a spread system or at least as much as they could with the little guys. I'm still not sold on the middle schools yet. I haven't seen a MS game in a long time but I do know that CCMS could give two s&%#$ what ACR does. A few years ago when my youngest son went to CCMS, the football program was a joke. They won some just because they had better players than the other teams mostly. They have their own agenda and mindset when it comes to their stuff. I have no idea about ACRMS but I know in the past they had their own ideas and didn't do what the high school ran. ACRMS, in my mind, should ask Coach Laws what he would like for them to do. I don't know if that is going on now or not.

All good points but I think other than a handful of schools footballs just not as important as it used to be. The culture in our neck of the woods (wnc) has changed immensely in the last few year’s mirroring our nations current view . Footballs just not important to kids today. Technology rules! It’s a whole lot easier to set on a couch and play football . No sweat no physical pain etc. I will wholly agree that coaching is at an all time low. The schools with good coaches are the schools that still care about football.

I agree about CCMS, they are mostly TCR people from what I understand. As for ACRMS I’ve heard they work with the varsity staff a little, seems they have some quality players this year, so maybe the future is going to continue to be what ACR is expected to be.

Not a shot at Asheville here, I really like the area, but as a whole they are very open to everything modern and liberal.
This includes a very soft approach to many things, with sports being one. I said this years ago and was blasted for it, but I wish those mountain folk would have ran that mess out of there when it started!

Great tradition and some mighty fine teams in passed years in those moutains. I sure hope things recover

No apologies needed here. It’s a well known fact statewide that the majority of people in the city of Asheville’s biggest concerns are that there aren’t enough paper straws and bicycle paths. This isn’t exactly the same crowd that gets behind a sport like football. However, having said that, it was like that 5 years ago and Asheville had by far the best team in all of wnc. I really think social media and cost of living has contributed to our demise the most. I mean you look at some of the things posted after we beat franklin on social media and you would have thought we won the state championship.
5 years ago Asheville had a legit top 2-3 team in all of 3A. 5 years later we can’t even win a playoff game and now have gotten to the point of potentially not even making the playoffs at all.

The problem in Asheville isn't the natives but rather the influx of newcomers with their socialist ideas. More and more native Ashevillians are moving away because they either can't afford it or are tired of all the permissive behavior within the city government. I could move over to east Tennessee and live a lot more comfortably on my current salary than I do living around Asheville. The newcomers are more into soccer, tennis and stuff like that. I guess that bodes well for TCR. :)
