Any wrestler who gets even one D1 offer is one lucky person. Nine scholarships for a team of thirty kids is a tough road. Football provides 85. It is rare any kid in North Carolina gets a D1 offer. Almost all Carolina kids on a roster for wrestling have walked on. A two time state champ at App got 1000 bucks a semester. And he was a three time United States All American. The difficulty in being an All American in wrestling is staggering. It is not some designation like football, you must earn it on the mat at the national event against the nations best, man against man. Only the top eight get that designation.
Universities very rarely recruit North Carolina. Over half of all recruits come from the five major wrestling states. Finishing 6th in Ohio, Penn, California, New Jersy, and New York is considered big. California has one champion for a 33 million population. There is no 1A thru 4A. So it goes in other states. I would say he was highly recruited considering the facts.
Perception is we are not a viable recruiting state mainly because North Caroilna rarely sends kids to major events. It is very expensive to send kids.
