Just thought I would get everyone reactions to what they saw, or what their general feelings are about the 1A class after week 1 is in the books: Comments, Details, Facts and Knowledge is always welcomed and appreciated.....

My own observations after week 1
----------------------------------------------
Murphy is good, and may just have a better team than they did last year after humbling Pisgah on a neutral field last Thursday night 30-13, so their early season rank as the best in the 1A class is most definitely deserving at this point in the season, and they currently have a 15 game win streak to back that up....

Tarboro is emerging as the early favorite to come out the East after dismantling last year's 1A Runnerup Plymouth(49-7), and clearly looks the part of a 1AA Title contender from the East...

Both West Montgomery(Beat Jordan-Matthews 38-7) and 1A Newcomer North Rowan(Beat Salisbury 42-15) appear to be on a collision course showdown for the YVC Title this year, and a possible date in the 1AA Title game after friday night's results...Clearly both are at least favorites to reach the 1AA Western Regional Final....

Both 1A Newcomer Holmes(Beat First Flight 42-16) and East Carteret(Beat Washington 28-27) had impressive season debuts friday night, and look to be the early favorites in their respective conferences, and early challengers to Tarboro in the Eastern 1AA...

Eye-Openers Friday night
------------------------------------

Certainly there were a few surprises to mention, and here are a few of mine...Albemarle 13 Thomasville 6, Mitchell County 21 Erwin 14, Elkin 31 Surry Central 14, Manteo 33 Currituck 6, Southside 26 Ayden-Grifton 0, Princeton 28 Smithfield-Selma 21, Avery County 56 Ashe County 35 and Community School of Davidson 32 North Moore 13 to mention a few....

Other Tidbits of notice
-----------------------------
Bear Grass Charter School won their first ever game as a 1A member against Lejeune, and did so in impressive fashion, beating the Devilpups 34-8 to open the season, so congratulations to the Bears on their opening season victory, and welcome to 1A Football...

Highland Tech blasted Christ the King from Huntersville 34-12 gaining a much needed win for the Rams' Football program, and ending a long losing streak in the process...

The return of Bruce Ollis at Polk County started off on a good note with a 30-14 win over Chase as another Overholt(Dillon) is taking snaps from center, and that is obviously a good thing for the Wolverines as they reintroduce themselves to the 1A class this season....

Swain County and Tuscola fought tooth and nail down to the wire with the Mountaineers earning a hard fought 21-14 win over the Maroondevils....

East Wilkes signaled to the 1A West that they will be a contender this year with an impressive 36-20 win over East Surry....While down the road a piece, Mount Airy did the same beating Starmount 28-7 as both the early 1A favorites from the Mountain Valley and Northwest Conferences opened with victories....

Bessemer City(Beat Cherryville 38-7 in a non-conference opener), Pine Lake Prep(Beat Northside Christian 14-7) and Thomas Jefferson(Beat Carolina Wildcats 34-7) along with the Community School of Davidson let it be known that they intend to challenge the Mountain Island Charter School(Beat Franklin Charter of Rock Hill S.C. 48-6) for the Southern Piedmont Conference Title this year.....SPC Newcomer Union Academy also won big beating Charlotte Hickory Baptist 56-7, so the SPC should be interesting this year as a new 8-team 1A conference....

Other Notables
--------------------
Alleghany shutout North Stokes on friday, but that score is questionable to whether it was 12-0 or 52-0?

Same can be said about former TRAC Conference foes Kipp Pride and Louisburg who played friday night with a final of 41-0 being listed, but which team won by that score is a mystery at the moment?

Lakewood's 22-0 shutout of Pender County along with North Duplin's convincing 46-12 win over West Columbus gives a pretty good indication that those 2 teams along with Princeton will be the teams to beat in the Carolina Conference...

My Early Assessment of the SMC
---------------------------------------------
Clearly Murphy is the favorite, and it's their title to lose....Both Cherokee(Beat North Buncombe 36-10) and Swain County will likely battle for 2nd and 3rd....Robbinsville was apparently idle friday night, so don't quite have a good read on the Black Knights as of yet....Rosman(Lost East Henderson 35-28), Andrews(Lost Smoky Mountain 56-21) and Hayesville(Lost Towns County Georgia 38-21) lost their openers, and those 3 teams will likely battle to stay out of the SMC cellar this year with the Tigers having the slight edge at the moment of finishing 5th out the 7 SMC teams IMO, but the Tigers do get Robbinsville at the Swamp in a few weeks after an early trip to Cherokee County to face Andrews, so we shall see which of those 4 teams want a shot at the playoffs because remember there are only 48 invites statewide this year, so a 5th place finish in the SMC will likely mean that team will be watching instead of playing in early November when the playoffs begin?

Those are some of my first week observations, what are yours?

Roar Tigers Roar!
