We are coming up on basketball season quickly. Who are the top 10 teams on the west side of the state?

1) MA
2) Cherokee
3) Atkins
4) bishop
5) South Davidson
6) HD ?
7)
8)
9)
10)

Not sure who else to put up there. Maybe Prep? Thoughts?

Doubt Prep will be very good, no JV team last year and lost like 80% of the varsity roster to graduation. Murphy may be a sleeper. They return all their key players, plus they hired HD's coach and one of HD's better players transferred in.

Yeah was also looking at robbinsville as well. I didn't think of Murphy that will be interesting. this really could be MA's year or maybe Atkins. Not sure what is out in the east.

Word is that Prep may not even have a girl's basketball team...going from back to back State Titles to no team - wonder how that happen's?

Not sure BN. Don't know too much about 1A ball relative to other classifications.

I do wonder how East Wilkes and Elkin will be. They had some good success last year. Maybe Chatham Central? They're usually not bad. This is going to be a strange year.......

Could it be a year the traditional takes it?

You are kidding me?
I'm afraid not. Most 1A teams don't have to deal with open enrollment schools like those in WSFCS. The NW1A has had to deal with it ever since being stuck with Prep 8 years ago. Due to Prep's open enrollment policy (like all other WSFCS schools), they can reload every year with transfers. In this case, the previous coach left (knowing all but 1 of his team from last year was graduating). There's limited interest in kids playing now and as of last week, no coach for the women's team. If they lose the women's team, the NW1A would be stuck with a conference member that offers a whopping 4-5 sports.

That says something to go from back to back state champs to nothing at all.

Depending on how 2 players return from injuries, Cherokee should have a great shot to take it. Return most of their core, including the conference player of the year and two other all-conference players, and added a transfer who was the player of the year in the Asheville area's private school conference.

I agree I think the teams right now you have to look at to be the pre season favorites if you will would be:

MA - Very Good team believe they returned their core

Bishop - sorry guys coach runs a great program up there and I can't count them out.

Atkins - very strong team that I believe returned all their key players

Cherokee - for reasons stated above also a very well coaches team

South Davidson - returning all of their key players I believe. I don't know if they could win it all but could be dangerous

I think right now in no specific order that would be my top 5. Other teams that could make noise especially with the new playoff format would be:

Chatham Central - always well coached could be a dangerous team

Albemarle - very young but talented play a tough non conference so could be interesting

Union Academy - not sure how good they will be got a new coach but they have a really good player and we're very young last year.

Murphy - based off of what was said on here and the respect I have for that coach they could be dangerous.

Swain - I am putting them up here because they were young last year and have a very good player I would think they would be better this year. I don't think they will be in the group I think could make a run at the title but dangerous.

Gray Stone - they are all about matchups. They can be dangerous depending on the matchup. Really good coach some good young talent. They lost a lot last year so as of now it's hard to tell where they will fall.

Good write up, but maybe rethink Swain. The "very good player" you're talking about transferred to the private school where the guy who runs her AAU program coaches.

What?!?? Smh wow. Well we will take them off our list lol. Sometimes I think people don't understand that when you transfer schools, sometimes that hurts you. College coaches hesitate if there is a inability to display commitment and dedication to a program. Transferring schools often times is not going to improve your chances nor opportunities to get recruited. In some cases you have coaches not helping a kid or teaching a kid which those I understand. College coaches will always find talent, especially when you have a HS coach working for you. Not sure of the situation at swain but from watching them I don't think they could have used her in a better way.

I wish her luck though. She has the potential to be a great player.

In this case it may not be her. Her father wants to coach wherever she goes and it seems he is using her to develop job offers. At least that is the rumor.

The player that transferred in from Rabun Gap has already left and gone back to Rabun Gap. The other injured player's dad says she is expected to return from ACL surgery in mid November. Cherokee is a team loaded with athletes and talent. Should make a strong run this year if they stay healthy

Whatever traditional is standing come regionals I will be pulling for.
